They improved the CGI of the predator's face for this trailer, glad to see it. Trachtenberg loves the whole mythos, so I'm excited to see what this is like
Unfortunately, I'm at a point where I can't get excited at all for any movie releases of beloved franchises anymore. All I see is "great, another cash grab, let's see how bad they fuck it up this time".
Don't really care for humanizing the Predators. I get they are technically humanoids, but I don't feel right seeing them as personable to this extent. I'll still see it, though.
I haven’t kept up with the Predator franchise but is this the first time The Company (Weyland Yutani) has appeared in a Predator film since the two AVP movies?
They dropped many of the details around the face and head. Essentially they got lazy with the design. Kinda sad. I don't mind it being red, they have always had a variety of skin tones, I just wish it had more pattern to it.
Some of the creature design seems a bit lazy. The tentacle plant I like, but the flier is just a pterosaur, and the "boss monster" is kind of just a big, vaguely cat-like... thing?
yeah. One issue with today's expected CGI fidelity is that for full fantasy creatures, they basically have to develop full fantasy physiology with all muscles, sinew etc. So often they got the easier way of just copying actual real animals instead. Like the diamond shaped Mulefa from the HDM books. Just became an elephant/tapir mix in the BBC show because that was feasible in the budget/timeframe
Copying the motion isn't a problem. But you do have to develop a compelling and interesting creature around that mechanical profile. Which I don't see out of the boss monster.
The head shape is just completely human with the exception of the mouth bits obviously, as opposed to previous designs where is was decidedly nonhuman. Obviously they were always anthropomorphic with them being bipedal and having eyes and a mouth in approximately the same location a human would have them, but the changed skull shape was enough to make it register as "alien" in my head, whereas this one registers more as "guy with weird mask".
There's that fucken word too. Yautja is such a dumb, pop-scifi name that bears no resemblance to the vocalisations of the original Predators, ie. more anthropomorphisation. It's got a rounder head, smoother skin, less-pronounced mouthparts, human-like hairstyle, shallower, more expressive eyes. It's a sanrio predator.
Wrong on literally every detail except for the hairstyle which the Yautja has always had ( unless your too stupid to think the predators hairstyle isn't inspired by dreadlocks) and the eyes which I'll give you
Even though they look like dreadlocks but aren't, I'm not talking about that - I'm talking about how they come off the front of his scalp like he's straight out of the Vikings TV show, rather than from the underside of his cranial crest - which coincidentally he also doesn't have because of the rounder, human-like head. You know, this whole section:
Fucking thank you. I knew that something was off about the general silhouette but I just couldn't place it.
And yes. Looking at this side by side of all the previous designs, this new one is clearly more anthropomorphized. The head shape is just a humans with the fact bits. Everything else about them is gone.
If you are a WW2 history nerd though, you might want to deactivate that part of brain. Although it was nice to USS Ranger (CV-4) get some love for a change.
Oh yeah! I still need to watch it but I LOVE the animation style from the trailer. It's like an oil painting come to life. My dad is the WW2 nerd, I'm the animal nerd, lol.
Is this a connection back to the alien franchise?? I know with Prometheus they retconned the AVP movies because it set fhe creation of aliens to be farther in the future than the previous movies had set
Good. They're not a uniform species and are advanced enough to be considered for the Federation, hell, they'd decline and give the federation a serious fight before even considering. I didn't like the new Klingons, but art should make you uncomfortable, art of alien species should make you feel uncomfortable in exactly that way, that they're not quite right.
Knowing Americans who can't have anything stay as a mystery and everything needs to be explained it was inevitable. Just like Scott ruined Alien with an explanation and ruining the entire concept horror is built on which is the unknown.
Speaking of, with the inclusion of Wryland Yutani, I'm wondering if this one isn't actually a secret AvP movie. Or, at the very least, a set up for a proper one finally. They keep setting them on earth in the modern day, and just...man, the space Marines are right there, and a way better way to insert humans into the mix without them just being fodder straight up. Turns it from, "no shit, they're getting slaughtered" to a resounding, "oh shit, they're getting slaughtered"
Thought they were going to take a new direction after PREY. Not really world building, just Predators hunting people across time. Lebanon, Iwo jima, Vietnam, Iraq, the trenches of WW1.
They are fleshing them out wrong though. I keep waiting for a Machiko Noguchi AvP movie I'll likely never get. Hollywood doesn't want to take the existing books and comics and create something fans already love. They want to put twists on it that don't make sense to the die hard fans.
I am a huge Alien fan (the good ones at least of which I'll definitely include Romulus which was the best movie hands down since Aliens) but goddamn the lore has ruined the universe. Aliens made by David? The dumbest woman in Alien history being experimented on (Noomi made every single mistake POSSIBLE including fucking her unquarantined partner RAWDOG!) by him? The Creators... It's just stupid. The mystery was what made it fantastic! Your mind ran wild. Too much exposition has ruined the myster
And some of the paths have just been stupid. "Predators hunt to add different species genes to themselves." No. You're wrong. That's what Xenomorphs do. Predators hunt because that's fucking cool enough.
Yea. Like, the hunt could have been something they did to gain social standing or a rite of passage of some kind. They could be like British colonizers who hunted "for science". Something that plays on their warrior culture which was featured heavily in the OG movies.
Literally anything would be better than making them knock-off "xenonorphs but intelligent".
Like, the whole thing that made AvP cool is just how diametrically opposed Predators were from the Aliens in their strengths.
Hey look, we've really been waiting to take a good look at the planet that spawned these intergalactic sport hunters, and I'm loving this clip's energy so far.
Did Prometheus kill your enjoyment of Alien? Actually, maybe that's a bad example...
What people sometimes forget is that Xenomorph fans already survived Alien 3 (underrated) and Alien Resurrection (fun movie that just shouldn't have been Alien-branded, should have been more like a tribute/parody). And since Prometheus we've had Covenant and Romulus. Prometheus barely registers anymore.
Just as people did not like avp i enjoyed them. Sure i got a awkward view from someones camera and could not hear everything. But it was still enjoyable
Maybe I'm crazy but Romulus might be my favorite of the modern (post resurrection) alien movies. It's actually a good nod to the original with a unique twist. I like that it doesn't read necessarily like an alien movie.
Pace your answering of questions and your opening of new ones. Keep them aligned in theme, and expand laterally into unexplored facets, rather than trying to keep going bigger.
Why what? Why explore an interesting world? Why open new questions? The answers to those are 'because I want to' and 'to keep it from growing stale as we explore it.'

This is kinda like a Mad Max: Fury Road version of Predator IMO. Well, without the car chase, but just as metal and *mad*

One day, we'll get a movie that shows us Predator society and it turns out the hunters were just overpaid dentists on vacation.

That's exactly why they hunt in the true lore from way back in the days of Dark Horse comics. Hunting is entirely for social standing.
