They feel no different than any other tile...if the tile installer does their job properly. Personally, as a professional tile installer and shower enjoyer, I think river rock feels the best in a shower pan.
But why? You start at the top then you work to the bottom. You go from left to right. How in the blazes do you end up with the middle being the last piece? You build it normally then take out the middle piece at the end. That’s how. Lines up nicely? TickTok Magic.
I suspect either the drain fitting hadn't arrived yet or they didnt know the precise location of the drain and left that section open for the plumber. Then they came back and tiled it in
