The Effects of an Awful Thunderstorm That Hit Us

Jul 15, 2016 12:43 PM

This was the size of the hail five hours after the storm.

The hail broke a window in our screened room. At least it was only one!

And none of the windows in the main part of the house broke, so that's good

And made a new skylight in our bird feeder!

We have to get all new siding now, as well as roofing on both the barn and the house

At least our insurance is covering most of it!

It also destroyed mom's flower gardens

She's a huge gardener, and her flowers are her pride and joy. Living up north with a relatively short growing season, there will more than likely not be enough time for any of it to grow back before it gets cold again.

And my parents' flourishing vegetable garden

It was my parents' first veggie garden in almost a decade, and it was coming along beautifully. Now it's all gone

But the biggest problem is all the dents on our camper

It wouldn't seem like a big deal, except apparently according to some stupid law written in a few years ago, despite the fact that there was no structural or functional damage done at all to the camper, the insurance company will consider it totaled and take it away from us whether we want them to or not. Camping is our life in the summer, and it will be awful to lose it. We would be more than happy to continue camping with it, dents or not, and I know a lot of people who wouldn't think twice to use it as long as there was nothing else wrong with it (which there isn't), so I don't know why the government seems to think it's a lost cause.

Sorry about all the ranting! I know it could have been a lot worse. This storm just came out of nowhere and took us all by surprise, and I wanted to vent my frustration, mainly about losing our camper. That was my childhood since I was about nine years old, so it's really depressing to think we won't have that anymore.

Broken puppets for sale. No strings attached.

Hi, many insurance companies will allow you to buy back totaled property for a reduced value and still give you a check for the value

Tulsa?

You'd think two hundred years living there might make people see the benefits of decent building materials.

The insurance company can't take something away from you... Don't file a claim on the camper. Thus, it isn't the insurance company's problem

That's a hail of a lot of damage

Someone had to say it!

With a car, the insurance will total it out but you can reduce your payout by the salvage value and keep it.

Depends on the insurance company actually.

You guys brought up my pathetic status of "neutral" to the slightly-better-but-still-fucking-depressing status of "accepted!" I love you all

I'm sorry about the insurance... Its because people charge so much more to take out each dent, so it would be cheaper to replace. It sucks..

That's very unfortunate. But, using a camper or RV isn't camping. Try a tent, friend. - Ron Swanson

After this, we may have to!

A tent? Hell, he probably builds a new cabin every time he goes camping

Could you just file a claim on everything except the camper, or is it under home owners insurance?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Home owners insurance, I believe

You can tell them to back that part out again, it's up to you.

How are the cars?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No one was home at the time, and none of the cars got hit by the hail, so that's a relief!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well that's fortunate!

So you're claiming through FEMA? Not sure why - if this is your homeowner's insurance you can tell them you're not filing on the camper.

This is true! Home and camper are different insurance. Camper is auto. (in America at least)

Wondering this myself.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AFAIK, FEMA only does the flood insurance, not hail damage. Maybe OP doesn't know the details?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking so. The only way you have government insurance is if you've had so many claims that regular companies won't take you. (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And that's usually only auto from my understanding/if I'm remembering correctly. (2/2)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Didn't even know there was an option for auto ins. through the gov. That should be eliminated. IMO of course. FEMA does administer flood ins

It's one of those dumb necessary things because people. AM traffic, I see a guy paging thru a notebook. PM traffic, guess who hits me?
