I’m a school secretary in a major city and it’s my dream job.

I have a bachelors degree in social work. But I’m not in a social work position. Even though a secretary seems like a low goal. I absolutely love it. I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I’m one of the people that parents and students see when they come into school. My goal is to make sure my students know that not only is our school a wonderful safe place to be, but so is the office.

If it's what you want and it pays the bills, why not be happy in this job.

Being in a job that makes you happy is worth more than any amount of money!

There are few jobs where a love for it is more important than anything in the education arena. Good for you.

School secretaries were the bastion of trust and Hope when I was at school. Care for those kids, OP.

Congratulations on making it, as a 25 year old burnout it's good to see some people did. This sounds sarcastic but I am genuine.

Schools are social work.

People like you are the reason schools get stuff done. You're doing a great service for those kids, OP.

Looks like you took Pam's desk.

Getting to do what you love every day is a goal 99.9% of us will never reach. Most of us just get by.

More power to you! Make sure that your office is the best you can make it. A lot of times just one good interaction can make someones day!

I was admin in a school before I got a more hands on position. Both jobs were So fulfilling. You are part of the system and it's awesome.

I love this! I was an office helper for our receptionist and it's one of my best memories from high school. (I hated high school)

Yay for happiness!

Hey! I also have a BSW AND also don't work as a social worker! Congrats on having a job you love!

If that's what makes you happy, then you stay right where you are. I hope to be lucky enough to be happy like you are one day

Thank you for your presence, you are admired and appreciated!

Thank you for not being a bitch! The ladies at my kid's last school... They could use a social worker!

Doing a job you love (and that pays the bills) is THE goal. Doesn't matter what it is, as long as it makes you happy. :)

Secretaries who aren't bitches are the best ever

I’m hoping I don’t burn out and turn into one. I have to catch myself when I’m grumpy to make sure my kids don’t take it on.

What school? I'll send you some M&Ms

As someone who spent a lot of time in the office in trouble the secretaries were always super sweet and never judged me. Respect.

I loved my school secretary, she helped me through some shit and always knew how to handle things discreetly especially as a foster kid

If you love your job and are making enough to live on, then good for you.

Holy shit I wished my secretaries were the same way. I could tell the difference between it and an actual hen house.

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Me too. That why I try to be the way I am in my office. It really makes a difference to the kids

I’m a teacher and I can tell you that the school secretary is the backbone of the school.

I've worked many places and no one looks down on the receptionist. She (always has been a "she" for me) knows all. Me, however . . . .

Fucking right they are. I'd piss off the principal before I annoyed our secretaries.

Seems to me like a degree in social work would be ideal for situation like that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. If you're doing what you love and getting paid, you've hit pretty high.

Fucking bingo.

That's an exclamation, not my goal in life.

As someone that was frequently misfiled and screwed over in university, please, please take care of the people. A tiny mistake hits hard.

I don’t let anyone except me or my other secretary touch the records. We keep our staff on our toes

Last year I declared "I can now die a happy woman" at age 21. I got a job at my dream company, IKEA. I'm still as happy as day 1

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Amen! Could you send some glazed huge rolls please? ;) I miss them so very much.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Try ordering from IKEA.com :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t blame you. Meet with him then decide, but I tell parents all the time to be ready to be persistent. /1

If you don’t get results don’t stop just ask what the next step is from wherever you’re at. And don’t forget to document EVERYTHING /2
