Since a kidney illness I had when I was ~4/5 years old that involved ALOT of needles, I’ve suffered from a crippling phobia of them my entire life. My family didn’t help by making jokes about it whilst growing up, like “if you’re naughty/not careful etc you’ll have to go have injections!” And prodding me and yelling “jab”. One time I was taken to the doctor’s office for a “routine check-up”, but it was a lie to give me a blood test; this obviously made me very distrustful of any doctors office or hospital visits too. It’s actually ruined me, mentally and emotionally.

I’ve stayed healthy and avoided ever getting into situations that involved anything. Skipped a trip abroad a few years ago because some vaccine shots were mandatory, and got kicked off a client’s project at work because I turned down a mandatory drug screening test/blood test.

And then, this bloody pandemic business started. Then they developed a vaccine; great I thought, if enough people get it, it will go away. I was wrong. Comically so, as EVERYONE needs not just one but TWO vaccines. God is real and he’s a cruel fucker.

I put it off as long as I could, but my family, loving bastards as they are, pressured me into going to talk to my doctor about it. Next thing I knew, I’m trialing some diazepam to see if it calms me down. When that worked, we booked my jab.

I’ve spent the day having panic attacks and popping diazepam pills, and when it finally came to the jab, I just barely got through it... I blacked out just after for a while, and broke down crying afterwards, but it’s done.

Just a reminder of the title, I’m a 31 year old man, and cried like a baby. Im not proud of that, but who cares, I got the vaccine, and am now one step closer to normality for me, and safety for my family.

And now to dread the next jab in 5-8 weeks...

—FP EDIT—
Thank you all for the kind replies and messages, I only wrote this post as I wanted to vent quietly into the void of user sub, but if this helps anyone else who struggles with injections like me, that’s great too.
Talk to your doctor before making an your appointment, explain your situation/fears/worries, and they will definitely try to help you.

And definitely take someone with you when you go for emotional support.

My arm is aching like hell today, but I’m loving having 5G signal everywhere I go.

I am SO FREAKING PROUD OF YOU!!! You did something incredibly hard. It was a sonofabeach but you DID IT! Look at you conquer your fears.

I was a medic in the Army. I’m terrified of needles and had to get stuck with a lot at AIT and during unit trainings. You are very brave! +1

I have a needle phobia and jusy barely manage by shielding my eyes. The nurses are thankfully understanding.

You have no idea how fucking proud I am of you! (I work in healthcare and so frustrated with people who refuse for no good reason)

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Honestly you have nothing to be ashamed off. things like this are deep rooted subconscious stuff.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Your brain is literally trying to keep you safe by keeping you away from needles because it associates a past bad thing with them

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You should set up a reward for yourself after you get the second so it helps you not dread that day. New watch, ice cream, day of golf...

What ever tickles your fancy

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You're awesome op

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

You are a stupendous badass! So proud of you! I wonder if therapy or hypnosis would benefit you to keep conquering this.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Therapy maybe, but I’m too self aware for hypnosis apparently.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm 49 and did the same. Terrified of needles and only got past it with drugs and my wife covering my face

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As someone who is immune compromised- thank you. You've done me a great service in helping to protect me and others like me.

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

It’s the least I can do. We all have people we want to protect, and I don’t want to be mistaken for an antivaxxer either!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ditto. Kudos to you along with my immunocompromised gratitude. You took a huge step. Be proud. Facing your fears IS courage.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There is no greater enemy than ones own fears. It takes courage to face them. You have gained great honor.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I’m proud of you. I broke down in the dentist’s office from my dental phobia. It’s about trust (or lack of) and body agency

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If people have been callous or disconnected, it’s easy to have a generalized phobia about medical institutions and interventions

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is so true. "It's not a big deal!" Well-meaning at best, insensitive at worst, and doesn't ease fears.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don’t know you but I’m super proud of you!!!

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Modern problem need modern solutions. Good job facing your fears.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My daughter also has Trypanophobia and had to take diazepam to get her shots. It really dose help.

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I’ve never had it before now, it’s an absolute godsend of a drug.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are the things is was meant for. It's highly addictive (when used regularly) but when used right it really is a godsend.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I take it every time I need a shot or blood test (after avoiding needles for 10+ years)! It's still scary, but manageable which is fine.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you were able to find a way to be safe!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is literally the definition of courage. Good on you.

4 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 2

Absolutely, was about to say the same thing. Well done @OP!

General Martok: "There is no greater enemy than ones one fears."

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Fear is the mind killer

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey, you got the shot and you survived. If it takes a benzo, alright. You help stopping this pandemic and faced your fear. Good job!

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This pandemic has caused me no end of grief at home and at work, I just want things to get back to normal!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well done you. Don't start dreading the next one now. Every time those thoughts creep in, just think how this one went. You fucking did it.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I heard a story on NPR about a new treatment for phobias: exposure, then a beta blocker to help the brain reconsolidate the memory. Link>

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Damn too long. Search Washington Post for an article entitled: "Overcoming the fear of spiders, in 2 minutes"

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This random stranger on the interwebs is proud of you. Whatever you have to do to get through it, do it!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some people don't understand how different phobias are to fear, its genuinely paralysing. I'm proud of you for getting your vaccine!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone with crippling anxiety, I'm really proud of you. U should acknowledge that you did something that terrifies you and be proud too.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I take valium or such when I have de gal work done. No shame in avoiding mental pain, especially when it’s such a one-off event.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

*dental

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I take one when I get my epidural injections every 3 months!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People who make fun of others fears or how they laugh are the worst.

4 years ago | Likes 174 Dislikes 2

Agree. Let your freak flag fly! I love people laughing

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Same! I love how different laughs are.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My brothers used to make fun of how I laugh. Said I sound like a witch. Hurt a lot at the time. I embrace it now.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Embrace the laugh. Become the witch you were always meant to be. Put a hex on them! (Sorry, I love all things witchy) you my new fave person

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh I’m definitely a very witchy adult woman! That’s why I embrace it lol at the time, I was younger and it hurt a lot. Especially coming 1

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

From my brother. Thanks, hon! *internet Covid safe hugs*

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yea when you're younger that was pretty rude ?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ha, simple message but brilliant.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok honest question though, did you feel it? I didn’t feel it and neither did 99% of everyone I know.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I’m all honestly, I don’t think I felt it. But the pain isn’t the problem. I get hurt regularly rock climbing, so it was never about pain.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not OP, but I have yet to have a shot that does *not* feel like a focused, piercing burning sensation. Every single one hurts, and then is

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

followed by a few days of deep soreness at the injection site.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't feel the first but I definitely felt the second. It never quite hurt but there was pressure. It was strange.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Other way around for me. I think it's just luck of the draw on whether the needle clips a nerve or not.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m terrified of needles. I always need to lay down for shots or else I faint. Yet I have a sleeve tattoo. It can get better my friend!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

My sister fights. I remember a story about it taking several nurses to hold her still for a mandatory shot while in school. She has a tatoo.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and she was mostly fine while getting it.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya but tattoos aren't the same as shots.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They’re not far off. I’ve always wanted a tattoo but I’m fairly sure I’ll never be able to bring myself to get one ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ya im terrified of shots and I have multiple tattoos. It's not a single needle sinking into your skin followed by a volume of liquid.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly the two COVID vaccine shot's I've had have been the easiest injections I've ever had. I didn't even notice the first one (thought

4 years ago | Likes 326 Dislikes 1

Same. Tetanus shot and then poison ivy steroid shot for the most painful ones I’ve gotten.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s tetanus with the booster cause I had lockjaw already.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got my first shot today and ye didnt evem realize she was done till she told me a flu shot was worse tbh

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This^

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Legit, probably the only injection thats ever actually felt like a pinch, no others have ever felt like what they say

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't Think my first shot hurt. But i could feel everything. When the needs went in. When the liquid went into my arm

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

For both shots, I felt barely anything to the point I doubted I was injected at all. Was actually relieved when my arm started aching.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

same..I guess the covid vaccine is the only one where people "complain"of not having side effects because they think it doesn't work without

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So many people complained that the shot was painful and had terrible side effects that perhaps we just expected worse

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I slept for a solid day after the second shot. That's it. Felt nothing for either. Take it over small pox vx again (for work)

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I almost didn’t believe they’d given me my second shot until my arm hurt the next day.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got both of mine at work, since there’s a clinic there. I seriously didn’t realize the nurse was finished until she was putting on the 1

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Band-aid. For both of them. They both knocked me on my bass and made me feel like shit for 24 hours, but I would do it all over again if 2

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

My bass lol my ass*

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It meant my immunocompromised friends and family would be safe and this shit was all over. /end

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

the worker was lining up until she said "done"). The second sorta hurt, but it'd still be in the "top ten least painful shot's I've had"

4 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 1

I’m waiting on my second shot myself the first one hurt but only a day after I got the shot. Like someone punched me in the shoulder hard.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

same, it was super easy

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same here. To the point where I started worrying for a few days that she didn’t inject it at all.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My 2nd injection hurt like hell, but only because the lady jabbed me like she had to hit bone.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I literally didn't feel a thing on the second shot. Compared to injections I've had to self administer these were completely nothing.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's the real kicker. Whether you routinely get stuck. In a similar vein, my dad said he hoped I didn't get the headache he did & I told >

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

him that since I have nasty migraines & tension headaches, I'd probably handle one of those alright just because of experience.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I felt nothing for my 2nd shot, until I got the side effects afterwards... Was out for a few days.

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

The first one made me super tired. Second only gave me a more sore injection site.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I got a body wide rash about 4-5 days after getting my second dose of pfizer. Couldn't sleep cause my hands were slightly swollen and itchy.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this lasted for about 2 days.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

31 yr old here, and I still haven't had my 1st dose yet... for this reason. And other reasons as well.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hope your find a way to get it like I did. Im rooting for you!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I nearly, and sometimes do, pass out with every injection. What has helped for me is 1) Lie down during or immediately after the shot, and

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the helpful tips and encouragement! And yes, lying down helps. I usually turn my head away so I don't see it, then count in

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

French. English comes too natural, and French requires more focus for me. Thus, more of a distraction.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2) Getting some caffeine in me for a blood pressure boost. I have started getting yearly flu shots, and I've gotten both COVID shots.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I loathe needles, and every one hurts for me. Maybe take along some candy as a distraction or reward. (Ok, distractions don't work for me

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

either; that needle commands my focus when it hits. But hey, I like candy, so there's that. :) ) Yes it's a sucky experience, but I decided

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that it was a necessary one. I'm not sure what else to say though to encourage you to get yours too, other than... please do it. :)
