Years ago the number as smaller when I was in highschool. Seems that the consolidation of our media has gotten worse, and might explain the increased, fractured, and extreme partisanship the USA has been suffering from in recent years.

Local news is being consolidated as well. Sinclair will have a station in 72% of local markets if their purchase of Tribune goes through.

Look who just learned about giant conglomerates who control the media and almost everything we buy. Now trace who funds politicians.

Slap a circle on most of Europe for a "newspaper" that's UK only, yeah that makes sense

Old info & not-so-useful comparisons about a dangerous threat to democracy & free expression. How many times one song is played doesn't help

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't agree. NPR, Reuters, associated press, Siriusxm radio, Dow jones, Thompsonwest, Bloomberg, etc etc. I call bullshit.

Thank you, this was informative.

I wonder how 2016 number look like now that we have Amazon and Netflix producing their own stuff

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Insignificant changes. Netflix revenue is only 8b compared to those 6 corps' massive 275b. Can't really compare Amazon revenue fairly.

All the more reason to listen to NPR.

Even they have a slant, sadly. I'd hoped they'd be neutral/centrist, but they are more left than center.

GE doesn't own comcast. This is simple to disprove, thus you shouldn't believe anything else said here. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH PEOPLE.

Also love the fact thr infograph ignores everything used to be 3 channels on tv and even radio wasn't much more diverse as affiliates

Comcast is a publicly traded company.

they are "POLITICS" in USA. NEWS or "MSM" is about 5% New Information, retold/spun/repeated makes up 95% of content.

Not disagreeing with the content per se, but some of those sources are questionable

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If only this was accurate

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's up to us to be smarter consumers of media.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's bad enough with TV, they'd better not own the internet too.

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Icann (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) now runs the internet. But our bandwidth is controlled by these same companies.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Now runs internet in North America* Thankfully the shitfest is restricted to just this continent for now. Canada's CRTC is fighting ICANN on

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

the daily now. It's put a wedge in their bureaucracy, at least. Slowing down the inevitable shitfest.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Nothing unusual here. If you look at any other field, businesses tend merge in order to get bigger and stay competitive.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 8

Media is not any other field. A monopolized media threatens uncensored expression + spectrum/bandwidth are public resources/utilities.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

that this is happening in so many fields is actually a serious problem. free market is only great if there's actually competition.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good thing I don't watch TV. Just streaming and games. Fuck those executives!

8 years ago | Likes 70 Dislikes 7

...they control what content gets made &what doesnt. They control how the content gets to you, your I.P. & dont film deals decide games too?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Some of these companies have started moving to buy game companies and pay directly for the creation of most the stuff on Netflix.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same here but unfortunately I still need my internet through one of these guys.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Until you realize gaming is mostly the same way. Most AAA titles are owned by a few large companies. Indie games make up a TINY share

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

damn now I gain less enjoyment from the games!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Hell yeah

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This is why they want to control the Internet and why they attack alternative media like YouTubers

8 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

Although YouTube has gone its own directions of jacking off companies. Just follow any of the copyright problems to see.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They can't control individuals on the platform though

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yet still saw someone comment yesterday that "the WSJ is a highly credible source" Why? "Cause dey dun like Trump". Partisanship is cancer.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

political parties are the new religion, and the cold war was just the first crusade

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's sad that that is the case, but I agree, they really are.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

though with a 24 hour news cycle and a globalized economy...

we can now experience all the shitfests of the ancient world at light speed! and in color HD!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

BBC doesn't matter for top news agencies? Also is this more true than other things in some way? Everything has consolidated.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It's not talking about top news agencies, but biggest media companies. Since the BBC is public, it won't get on here. Kind of misleading /1

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

in that way, since most of the big media companies are big due to entertainment, not news. /2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So they're conflating "media" to mean news agencies, and "media" to mean any mass media? That does seem misleading.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

BBC is in UK, this is only for USA

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It says "and abroad" and it talks about controlling "what we read or watch". The BBC is absolutely received in the US.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I agree with you, the topic is misinforming us about this post. This post is fake news!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then why does it only list US media outlets? CBS, ESPN, Comcast, ABC etc. I've never heard of those in my country. They're strictly US.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know why it does. That is a good question.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The post is pointing out a problem. We know everything has consolidated, but media has the BIGGEST impact on society.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It seems confused about what "media" definition it wants to use, though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Going by its dictionary definition, the post has it right. "The main means of mass communication" TV, radio, movies, and news all fit in it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just very vague, lumps it all together, and doesn't seem to show what this consolidation means at all. It assumes it's a bad thing. Eh.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is a bad thing, though. Having a small group of companies with similar interests choose what the masses get to see/be informed of?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those outside the UK who aren't familiar, the Sun is a poisonous shite-rag and everyone associated with it is a giant, withered cunt.

Have you heard that there's a push for the premier league teams and surrounding shops to boycott them?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's called the Total Eclipse campaign or something. Started in Liverpool but gaining ground throughout

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why is it your most popular newspaper?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

it's debatable whether it can be called a newspaper. the German equivalent, Die Bild, doesn't use the term "newspaper" for that reason.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Because most of us are just as idiotic as the rest of the world sadly

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Because it has catchy and misleading stories. It is also especially good at headlines, and that really helps them shepherd the uneducated.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It only costs 0.- sterling so since the brexit devaluation of our pound it's all we can afford

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Use to have Boobs on Page 3, and because only old people or morons still read the newspaper.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Because most of the UK citizens are giant, withered cunts? Theresa May got elected again, after all.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

As a Brit, I'll take that. I mean I don't read the sun or vote tory but yep, pretty much

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

However there's fewer cunt rags than before (less of a Tory majority) so we've got that going for us..?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

That is true. Although I wonder if it's less tory voters or more people voting that outweigh the tory vote. Next few years will be interesti

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think recently the sun and daily mail can't be called newspapers anymore as they contain such little amount of news...?

8 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 2

Daily mail is for post cunts and the sun is for uneducated cunts. The worst of each of the two groups get their news from them

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2
