Greta: How dare you?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but do they do tricks?

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Unmuting the video and not hearing the jingle for Thomas the Tank Engine is the most disappointing thing I've experienced all day

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

someone felt the same way you did

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

lmao That's not exactly the song I remember from my childhood, but it's definitely a good version

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the black ones are usually faster

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I live my life one quarter mile of track at a time.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You still owe me a 10 second train.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Overnight parts from the Ottoman Empire

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait for them to get to the first turn.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

C'MON MUTHA FUCKAS C'MON.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's wonderful, best drag race of all time

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

What drag race? They whooshed by so fast I didn't see shit.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've never knew I needed steam engine races in my life!!

5 years ago | Likes 143 Dislikes 2

I need to be there. Has you ever smelled steam engine oil? So good xD

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In 1896 they crashed two into each other https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_at_Crush

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I took part in a different kind of train race - runners Vs train, 10km cross-country. One of the most fun races I've ever run

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I suspect the runners won, trains are terrible up those narrow cross country paths

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately the trains had a smoother line! Was still tough though, was about 55 mins or less to beat the train

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Steamed engines? At this time of year?

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

In this part of the country?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

In a pandemic??

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

localized ENTIRELY within the confines of your railyard?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Great, now I want to buy a steam engine. I can't afford a damned steam engine, I've got bills!

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

they come in sizes for everyone :-)

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No way, model trains are a gateway to collecting and before you know it you're planning a trip to Hamburg to visit Miniatur Wunderland.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

nice mallard

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Flying Scotsman or fuck off! J/k, I like streamliners too, it's all good!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i had to

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

And I’m glad you did

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Because fuck the ozone I guess

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 7

I mean they didn’t know what the ozone was back in 18whatever

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As far as I know, steam and smoke particles has no effect on ozone levels. Pollution and CO2 levels would be more of an issue, though.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Sulfur emissions contribute to ozone loss. Unless they use sulfur-free (char)coal, which I kinda doubt.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You do realize the black smoke is burning fossil fuels right? You do realize that releases CO2 RIGHT!? How'd you think that steam was made!?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 11

You've got your facts mixed up. CO2 doesn't hurt the ozone layer, damage there is mainly done by CFCs. Climate change is a separate issue.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Steam is water vapour, via evaporation or boiling. With steam engines, it's via superheated water including smoke particulates in the mix.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And how does the superheated water become superheated? It's not via solar power. The trains burn ________?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Either you're trolling or just plain stupid but superheated steam is boiling water under pressure beyond the 100 c (212 f) point.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steam engines did not have turbos or anything else to speed them up. What they did have was a shitload of torque.

5 years ago | Likes 457 Dislikes 1

They do have super heaters.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe only steam engines and electrical motors can develop maximum torque from 0 RPM.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, but NOS was pretty prevalent amongst the loco-motivators (I hope I don't offend any one that's the term I've heard used)

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You need Doc Brown in your life

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Aaaand now I must read up on Steam engine physics.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Look up exploded steam engine boilers while you're at it. A bit more Lovecraftian than you might expect.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Good lord. That is frightening.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The ratio is crazy. A steam engine might be only 100 Hp but have 3-4,000 ft-lbs of torque.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Alegheny" 2-6-6-6s were 7500 dhp and 110,000 lbf of tractive force. N&W Y6 2-8-8-2s turned out 4400 dhp and 152,000 lbf.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do they have gear ratios?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Their wheel diameter is the gearing pretty much. Geared steam locos do exist but they were used on short lines and narrow gauge lines 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Big class 1 steamers are 1:1, one move of the cylinder means one rotation of the wheels, or something like that. 2/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So their whee diameter is their gearing, the smaller the diameter, the less work the locomotive has to do to make it rotate.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw a steam tractor at a pulling show once. It only went about 5mph, but that 40,000lbs sled made absolutely no difference.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's all about torque vs horsepower.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://www.american-rails.com/y.html That's only half of the tractive effort available to a Norfolk & Western Y class locomotive.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

So you could imagine what such an engine could do on a different surface, with different wheels. Like the tractor you saw.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Who downvotes that? Lmao

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could 'roid up the boilerman?

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Most if not all diesel-electric trains use a turbocharged diesel engine to generate power.

5 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

I was led to believe that most modern engines needs a turbo just to work. They're smaller and therefore not as powerful on their own.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use it to blow air into the firebox would make it burn hotter. (Diesel locos already have turbos)

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can turbo pretty much anything that has a high flow exhaust

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I got a high flow exhaust, can you turbo me?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Triple expansion engines scavenge the most energy from the steam for a reciprocating engine. Steam turbines are most efficient though

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Used steam is exhausted through the chimney which sucks more air through the fire box making the fire burn hotter, it's a bit turbo-like.

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Passive turbo... It's a paradox firebox!

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Most diesel elecyric locomotives in the US have at least four turbochargers!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

On a steam locomotive, not exactly. Unlike a IC engine, the combustion system is not sealed, it's open, and the combustion isn't (1/?)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

creating force, it's creating heat. So while supplying more air to the firebox could make the fire hotter, and indirectly increase (2/?)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

engine power, you cant create higher boost pressure in the firebox, and if you could it wouldn't have the effect that it does in a car. (3/3

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You can and they are massive. Not ship massive, but still pretty big.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Can confirm, have sat inside a ships turbo.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Not when it was going obviously

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

There’s an episode of topgear where clarkson is the coal loader on a steam locomotive. Created wheelspin at 100mph

5 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 0

And British steamers only have like 40,000 lbs of tractive effort. American steamers like the N&W Y class are pushing 150,000

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Depends entirely on the class of loco, but yes, American steam engines were almost as big as Russian ones.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I think the largest steam locomotive ever built was American.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That's not a nice way to talk about your mom.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THE BIG BOY :)
