How a basketball court is refinished.

In case anyone was wondering how a basketball court is refinished.

My schools gym floor had at least a 3/8th inch of varnish on it. It was never stripped and redone. They just kept pouring it on, literally.

Finally someone who is not a dick about letting you watch all the way to finish!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the purpose of the white line they're using at the end ?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*puff* was it good for you?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh goodness. I remember doing these in the summer... In some regards that summer never ended

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My life is now complete.

i didnt know i was wondering before i saw this

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you just walk back and forth over and over til it's done?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, sort of. There's sanding, vacuuming, tack clothing, and finish pulling involved. But yeah.

8 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

How long did that last guy have to stand in the corner?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's wrong, you're supposed to just add another layer until it's like a giant trampoline so the basketball players can jump higher

Something like blue repulsion gel?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Then the floor hockey unit of PE comes along and you get a million white lines on the floor

*squeak* *squeak* *squeak-squeak*

Looked like a Claritin commercial at the end, there. Very satisfying.

Step 2: Apply socks. Step 3: Slide form corner to corner.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to work doing this. Made me happy see it being done exactly how I remember.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know what I thought this was going to be, but I'd hoped a wood finish zamboni had been invented for this

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And then they realized their phone was in the other corner.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They refinished the gym floor at the college I worked at. My god it stuck up the entire building!

Dear lord the dust...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Looks like the sanders are hooked up to fancy HEPA-type vacuums; as a contractor a bet that there's surprising little dust

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 With the setup that I use when I sand drywall theres so little dust that you almost think that you forgot to put sandpaper on the pad

*reads username* and the thATCHED ROOF COTTAGES

What kinda energy drink are those guys drinking? That's fast...

8 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 3

Meth

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Time lapse of 6+ hours, these guys are pretty efficient.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

So, 5 hour energy, then?

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

This is what my uncle does

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not removing the finish completely. It's a buff and recoat. Just scuffing the finish and adding another layer

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is beautiful thank you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like there should have been a zamboni.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They do that if they refinish it. Seriously, the sander is a ride-on. It's WICKED cool.

8 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

My floor has needed doing for years and these fuckers knock out a whole gym with just two men? I feel like a lazy ass.

I worked installing fire sprinkler systems and regularly put up around 800-1200ft of pipe a day so yeah a lot can get done when payed lol.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is true. There are indeed two speeds of doing things. Paid and not being paid.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Took me 5 days to do about 1200 sqft in my house. It's a significant task when it's old, beatup, needs stain and not a giant rectangle :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That and the damn mess of sawdust. I've been tempted to just tear it up and lay new stuff.

Just gotta wait it out..

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, that guy really painted himself into a corner there.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I hope you have an exit strategy, Lupe!

Plot twist: trying to paint the room white and they think they trapped themselves but really just ruined that painted corner.

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

That can of red paint and the brush with red on it kinda ruin this plot twist...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thats the blood of his enemies. Its just for show.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Ok, nevermind then.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, if you watch closely, you'll notice he's doing the last layer standing on the benches at the back of the room.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also many times they wear special sandles with spikes on the bottom so they don't leave footprints

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What about spike prints

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The shoes are sharp enough that the liquid has no problem flowing back into the holes made by said spikes

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Def thought removing the finish would remove the painted on lines. But i realy have bo idea how this works so guess it makes since im wrong

8 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

They remove the top layers of polyurethane. They usually don't sand off any wood or paint.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are SEVERAL coats of clear finish over the paint. They just took the top layers off. This is not a refinish, it's a recoat. =>

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

<= If they were refinishing it, there would be drum sanders, edgers, MULTIPLE sanding passes, stencils, paint, and many coats of finish. =>

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

<= This was just replacing the wear layers. Source: I did this for 15 years.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep, very strange

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i thought the lines were like a vinyl sticker.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Nope. Paint.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*muse* maybe the wood itself is stained deeply enough that just removing the finish doesn't affect it? I don't know, though, just an idea?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

It's like a car. There's a color coat (it's typically paint, not stain), then several clear coats of finish. They just took off the top coat

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ahh fair enough. I do not know why you have been downvoted for sharing information :/ +1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do it to myself. I remove the auto upvote on my replies. I'm a bit of an odd duck. But thanks for noticing! =)

8 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 1

As a former hard wood floor installer, I am also puzzled by this.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

It was just a recoat, not a full refinish. They'd need to get the rider out for a refinish. Then they'd have to repaint.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh I see. Gif is too fast for my lazy eyes
