Mix of a good paycheck and him finding the role fun to play. Probably helps that Robotnik/Eggman is an evolving character over the course of the movies so each movie he gets to play it in a new way instead of just rehashing the exact same character over and over, which he doesn't like doing.

If it was just money he would have done lots of movies before. He found something in it that he likes. He invests nearly all the money he makes, and lives off the interest. That is not a person that would just do something for the money.

I ultimately decided to see the Sonic movies specifically due to overhearing Jim Carrey's Eggman while cleaning up after it for work. I'm not even that big into the Sonic scene otherwise, I only played one of the old GBA games as a kid.

That's just my point. We have had plenty of it and rehashing the whole thing out in this series of movies seems like it will drag on too long and become stale, like Marvel is getting with superhero movies. I think 3 total was good, but I think the story will run dry on its current course.

Sent crashing into a pit at the end of the very end of the first sonic game, dropped into his own exploding fortress in sonic spinball, got pulled into a black hole at the end of colors, was stranded outside time and space at the end of generations

I mean, there was a whole thing in the comics where he died after being defeated and then a satalite released a clone with uploading his memories but the memories only partly uploaded so released a kindly old tinkerer type eggman into a small village instead. Eventually full memories came back.

The Sonic & Megaman crossover was actually damn good, and was actually a very creative way to reboot the Sonic Comic Universe after SEGA had finished with the legal issues with that previous writer. It's not often a crossover like that gets to have lasting consequences for a comic.
