Backstories For Popular Gifs Part 5

Was that really a thing in Saabs? Seems a good way to end up with Slurpee all over and in the console buttons after a sudden stop.

Saab! I think my friend's dad broke one of these, soon after he sold his car. The 2 probably weren't related, but in my mind they were.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for Saab

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like how everyone says "that's a saab, not a minivan!' ...as if cupholders can't be removed from one car and installed in another.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Another Saab story...

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's some Spykids level shit right there.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Had I but known, I would not have gotten rid of my Saab, piece of junk that it was.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Death before minivan.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My Dad has had 2 SAAB's as company cars until they removed this gem. Now he has a vovlo :( sad times

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's from a Saab, a company that never built a Minivan...

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I'm fun at parties, I swear.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

But Saab doesnt make minivans

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that a saab? I had one of those cupholders, but I snapped it off somehow... cost $100 for me to fix.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sold

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

f*ck you that's a Saab 9-3 not a minivan

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What a dick.... Grayson for wrecking the batmobile

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I see what you did there

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I did what you see there

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I look at that and think, 'great how long until that breaks'.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You always see these things in vans and SUVs, which have so much space. They're the last vehicles that need space-saving gadgets like that.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is from a Saab, so about five minutes.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

1st thought: fragile; 2nd thought:cup holder directly next to/above/inside the electronics? It looks pretty splash-resistant, but still..

What's our blue letter message at?

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

If I remember correctly, he finished with the blue letters and we got "THE KEEPER OF OTTO'S CROWN"

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We don't have it because this is a different guy reposting NoobTheLoser BTGs from before the blue letters

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I got so excited when I saw his drawing, then sad when I saw the name :(

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OK, this is excellent - show me how it closes though, it looks like 2 hands, and a little difficult...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That doesn't "mean reverse the gif"!!!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad's car has one - I'm always worried I'll break it, but you just push it back in with the same button. Easy.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gears. You just push it in.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gears or sprockets? ;-)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, as far as I know, sprockets are for tracks/chains or other materials with periodic indentations or holes, so not likely.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1/2 I'd guess a spiral "gear" rod (or whatever they are called) that is springloaded in some fashion, that at some point will catch a base

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 then start turning, and this motion is conveyed to a gear or gears in the mechanism attached to the upper and lower cup support.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What magical machine is this??

11 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 0

An early 2000s Saab 9-3

11 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

after '03 i'm guessing? i had a '99 9-3 and i think it was the same from like 99-03... mine wasn't anything like this

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

-03-14 if I recall correctly. I've had three cars with these cup holders.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I knew straight off it was a Saab when i saw that mechanical porn

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I love love love my Saab 9-3. Best car I have ever owned. I have a 2007 60th anniversary edition I bought 2 years ago. So awesome.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've got a 2007 SAAB 9-3 too! Mine's red.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I will save that as a future life hack.

I wish I had thought of that when I still owned my '86 Subaru Leone

Effective until you take a corner quickly enough.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If it looks stupid and it works...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

...it might still be stupid, but at least it fullfills some function more or less appropriately (until it stops working).

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

... It's not stupid. For now. :-)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

ugh this brown tape will leave marks. just use ducttape

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

Cause if anything comes off clean and easy, it's duct tape.

11 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

depends on the surface

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If the surface is sand, then yes, the tape comes off clean and easy. If it's a car dash board baking in the sun? Not so much.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Definitely not skin

11 years ago | Likes 351 Dislikes 0

Nice

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

How was I not expecting this? Hahaha

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

That cupholder exists only in Saabs. Saab was a wonderful car manufacturer and they never made a minivan.

11 years ago | Likes 114 Dislikes 3

I have a Saab! My cup holder is broken though :( And so is my soft top...

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hear that OP, you're a phony!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They make airplanes, but no minivans

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a cup holder?? I thought it was some sort of CD player and was trying to figure out what that bottom part was for. I'm not smart

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So in order to put that cup holder away... I have twist BOTH ends around and stick it back in? Retarded...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 20

Nope. The same button that released the cupholder will reverse the unfolding motion and retract itself back into the dash when depressed.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

It's the most depressing thing when one breaks though.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aaand that's why no other manufacturers do it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can actually buy after markets to broken Saab cupholder. Break anything else on the car and good luck!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Both the making of great cars and the non-making of minivans were contributions to the betterment of the world as a whole.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

IME minivans are generally equivalent or superior to "sport" "utility" vehicles in every respect except maximum towing capacity.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Offroad ability (including snow performance), acceleration, and handling are also generally better in SUVs, but both fit too many kids.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

As someone who has modified a minivan, I have a lot of SUVs beat in acceleration and handling. Can't off-road in a lowered car though.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, yeah, modified. SUVs can also take power mods and lowering kits, and then you're back where you started.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even in those areas. My experience has been that SUVs don't have the proper weight distribution to maximize their traction.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be fair, nor do minivans. Like utes (pickups), they're front heavy so that they're evenly loaded when full. Lots of understeer happens.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For handling? Most of them compensate with big-ass stabilizer bars. They'll max out and roll, but they handle well until that point.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a Saab story! Ha! Ha! Ha....

11 years ago | Likes 436 Dislikes 5

I hit you with that drop kick Marty Genetti

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Action Bronson

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's also quite a Saab story that Saab is no more...

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We shall not speak of this, unless we are trying to negotiate with the car salesman. ;)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I drive a Saab! There are others!

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

2003 saab and still works like a dream.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2007 Saab 9-3! Best fuel economy i've ever had!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

YES! <3 mine!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was about to say, I thought I've only been in Saabs with these and no other car had anything comparable to them. Minivan my ass.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

The volvo fold out one though

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Seriously. And another thing-- there is no car heater like a Saab car heater. Those things are WICKED.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My Ford's heater is crazy too. Gotta say.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a Saab owner, those cup holders break real easy. But oh the fun we had...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Very true. At first mine just stopped working and you had to pry it out with a key. Then it broke off completely eh.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How... I've had fairly sturdy friends practically stomping mine. It just took it and shook it off.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine fell off within the first month of my owning the car. I could buy a replacement for $30 or so, but I haven't gotten around to it.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now it just kind of sits there and every time I drive someone new and they go "oooh whats this?" it plops onto the floor.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow. Sorry to hear that. It's definitely a fun gadget. My wife loves it in a happy-dog-like way.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Saab didn't make mini-vans, yah doof.

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 7

Saab were fitted with that kind of cup holder.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is a Saab, though.

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

A Saab 9³, I believe. Or, as I like to call it, a 729.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I laughed... oh god. I am a nerd.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your username is certainly appropriate!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I drive one of those, but it doesn't have a cupholder.. It's also 18 years old, so I guess I should just use the tape-trick above.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, apparently the 2003+ models had the fancy spaceship cupholder.
