They have a TON of power for their weight class. So they can just throw themselves around basically.

That first one is gibbon the heck out of there

The speed they can get while swinging from tree to tree is amazing. It also looks like it could be rather fun. I loved swinging from the bars when I was a child oh so long ago.

Knew that was a gibbon in half a second and it made me hate my life more... I want to be outside.

You can fit tons and tons of them in a barrel

If you like the movement, there is a fun game based around it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1837330/Gibbon_Beyond_the_Trees/

And we gave up swinging for walking? SMH

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think I'll call him "EUELL".

3 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Must be exhilarating to move with that speed and ease.

Vids like the above are a VERY good example of why zoos have to *really* work to meet a wild animal's needs in captivity. Legit you'd need a mid-sized forest for that gibbon to get his natural movement.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a six-volume historical work by English historian Edward Gibbon, published between 1776 and 1788, that chronicles the Roman Empire from the height of the Antonine emperors (c. 98 AD) to the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

"fact about gibbons" includes Edward Gibbon, one of the more prolifically published gibbons, so I thought it relevant.

bra·chi·ate
verb
/ˈbrākēˌāt/
(of certain apes) move by using the arms to swing from branch to branch.
"the gibbons brachiate energetically across their enclosure"

3 weeks ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

And the lesser apes are the only ones to truly do it. Their shoulders can swivel around 180°, unlike the rest of the apes, who can only swivel at their wrists. That's why gibbons are the absolute experts at swinging through the trees.

3 weeks ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

And their hands lock hooked, to naturally avoid being able to lose grip mid-swing.

3 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So rude that we call them, lesser apes.

3 weeks ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It just means they're little. :) It's not a value judgement. Like the "least weasel" is the *most* adorable weasel, even though it's the least amount of weasel you can get.

3 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Always choose the lesser of two weasels.
