It's ridiculous to automatically assume that someone is going to act a certain way because of their race. Black, Asian, and Hispanic people have been told they're not acting black or Asian or Latino "enough" when they don't speak the way they're expected to, or if they like certain hobbies.

People form so many assumptions that someone cannot be the person he or she is based on things that are stereotypical of their race. They feel forced into a box.
Someone's surroundings do not change their race.

It needs to be said: race is not a personality trait. It also needs to be said that calling someone "pretty (or) handsome for a ______girl/ guy" is disrespectful, like this woman in the video pointed out

whose name is Kelly Stamps btw

She has a rather Lewis Black quality to her delivery. The seething anger. Nicely done.

He is a cool dude! Haven't spoken to him in years since we moved away from each other, but it blew my mind that other black folks told him >

He wasn't black enough. I blew my mind. I mean, I don't know what it's like to be a black person in America, but that seems extra foolish.

Assigning people to racial stereotypes is such an idiotic behaviour. Its illogical too, because, in the end, they all taste the same.

Mixed folks just can't fucking win, simultaneously expected to "pick a side" and also shunned for being "too much like them"

4 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 1

That’s why identity politics blows. You shouldn’t have to pick a side at all. If people don’t accept you for you they’re assholes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Or being told/asked that they might be adopted because their parent(s) aren't the same colour...

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep. Spent the entire 35 years of my life so far constantly bouncing off being both too white to be black and too black to be white.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't look white. I'm light skinned but clearly black. Identify as black. IDs say black. Cops say black. I'm vocal on black issues/life. ¹

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But because I speak properly and with a decent vocab I 'act white'. Worst part is I get that more from other black folk than white people. ²

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah this shit annoys me too. it doesn't make any sense at all, and it harms people. Race isn't a behavior or a way of speaking. I've known1

Personally I figured out who and what I was at 9 (I'm me) And have spent the last 28 or so years telling the rest of the world to fuck off

Black on the outside, white on the inside. The Asian equivalent is a Twinkie. Anyone know Hispanic?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Asian is banana. Twinkie, usually shortened to Twink, has connotations in the gay community.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oops, I thought that twink came from twinkle, like fairies or stars, not Twinkie

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a Hispanic person that just means we speak Spanish. It's not a race. We come in all shades

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah but its one of those slurs that's offensive only because people said it real mean, not because its inherently insulting.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Clarify: The N word just means "black" and is offensive because of how it was used. Something like "zipperhead" is inherently offensive.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Originally meant: African mixed with European; root word translates to "mule"... so yeah, *highly* offensive, never mind being archaic

FOB = "Fresh Off the Boat" (immigrant who knows English as a second language). "Banana" = "yellow on the outside, white inside". Can't win.

Well the problem might be what you consider "Articulate". Imagine being raised with an accent and being told its not "professional".

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Maybe it's just me, but Professionalism doesn't have much to do with an accent. It has to do with how you speak and complete your work. /1

The worst part is, I lost out on a job bc my name is so unconventional.

Anytime I hear someone use “exotic” in reference to a human being…no words. I can’t believe ppl use this term. So unacceptable.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

If I use "exotic" to describe someone, it's to remark on their pet. Primarily the blue macaw that will glue herself to me at the pet store.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I think most people think if "exotic" as like, tropical.. exotic fruits, pets, people all look like from tropical regions

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as a woman, I always wished I had a more pretty exotic look =(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exotic is a point of view. Meatloaf is exotic to the Japanese, as is a blonde haired blue eyed white person.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get caught off guard when i get the "what are you?" Out if no where. I usually slowly say "...a ....gir..oh u mean my race?" feels rude

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Should start telling them "I'm a pumpkin, which means I have to be home no later than midnight, or I turn orange again."

Giant white skinned latino who speaks a slightly off accented Spanish. I get this question because we all play the nation of origin game

I taught for a year in a school that was 90% black and it broke my heart when kids would accuse peers who got good grades of "acting white."

4 years ago | Likes 670 Dislikes 5

Truly awful. They will regret it the rest of their lives but you can't convince them without sounding like a NERD!

That one is extra bad because it has a racist target effect, but the same general problem of anti-intellectualism is at most schools “nerds”

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

In my experience as a white nerd, the ridicule I and my nerd peers got was nothing like what the high-achieving black kids got when I taught

Exactly. It's one thing to be called "nerd" its another to be told you aren't who you are because of it .

Someone told me they hid their love of reading books from their Black friends and family because they had been called oreo too often. Sad...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That just seems like they're saying that black people are supposed to be stupid.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

No, it's a whole set of things some of which are more valid than others

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And it's true for other groups too, that's why code switching is a thing.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, because as a 22 year old white guy from the suburbs and in over my head, I didn't feel comfortable addressing it. I would now.

What's sad is today there's an educational movement of teaching "hip hop youth" which makes me wonder, must all inner city kids love hip hop

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

I'm latino. Would hate to be considered salsa youth... unless you show up with salsa.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I would rather show up with salsa, than youths... but you gotta bring the tortilla chips. Deal?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Clearly you aren't a republican if showing up to a party with Mexican food "trumps" showing up with children.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hip hop youth here is a slang term meaning that we need to de-stigmatize learning as being "for white kids" and make it seem cool.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And like slang terms it is not encompassing and leans heavily on stereotype

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The stereotype that the majority of popular kids in urban classrooms like hip hop? I hate to break this to you, but... Yeah. That's a thing.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Source: Am a teacher and also was teased horrendously for liking school while being black at the time.

Now if only school had more hiphopfication. That would have changed things while marginalizing everyone that didn't appeal to

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Curious. Does my being latino mean I am Salsa youth. Do I need a salsafication of education?

I think it's still being debated if you can be racist against white people because the core of racism is about power

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 78

It's being debated, sure. But the debate is fucking stupid and was started/is being kept alive by fucking morons.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

No. Racism is racism.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Those are lyrics to a very famous song by The Offspring.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Ibram Kendi writes well about this. People can be racist in all directions, and if you use the power dynamic definition, it can apply on 1/

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A personal level, i.e. a black teacher and a white student, etc. It's a complex topic that isn't well handled in this forum. 2/2

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When I lived in Japan I was judged and/or avoided because I'm white (aka not Asian, Japanese, specifically). Would that not be racism?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes it would. Everyone here is arguing without actually stating what they mean by the word racism. Traditionally it has to be the ppl with

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

power discriminating against another race without the power. So in Japan, japanese ppl can be racist against you, but you can't be against

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

them. But t is honestly just an argument about semantics. Meanings of words change over time and every person in this thread is using

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interesting how downvoted this got given other attitudes in this site. A lot of performative wokeness happens here methinks.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 8

Because it is an extremely fringe position that is extremely illogical and mostly an attempt by racists to claim they arent racist

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I think maybe I'm misunderstanding something, I though the objection was to the idea that you can't be registered against white people

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Racist

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, people racist against white people want to redefine their racism so everyone else has the stigma of the word but not them

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Correct, you can't be racist against white people

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 32

You have not been to my old neighbourhood ?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha, where is this from? That's one helluva angry guy!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't know.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My Guatemalan grandfather was absolutely racist against Spaniards. "Filthy" was probably the nicest word he used

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

and being racist towards white people has nothing to do with equity, and all to do with trying to flip power dynamics. so yes it is power

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

BS, everyone can be a racist - towards anyone. Systemic racism is a bit different.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

How is discrimination being debated? You can still be racist against white people, but that's pretty clearly not been the case, historically

4 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

Because some people want to be openly racist, especially online, and not get any bother for it.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

There is an original definition of racism as coming from the race in power, using their power to denigrate etc another race. But words

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

change with common usage and generally these days ppl think of racism as hating someone based solely on their race. Plus you used the word

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

discrimination which is not always interchangable with racism. Using the original definition in the USA only white ppl can be 'racist'

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

From a European view, its correct that that's usually not been the case, but where they're a minority its different again. Even within

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

European countries. Where I used to live and the school I went to, racism and prejudice went all ways. Of course not every single person

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

there was a racist, but it was very prevalent. White girls were called whores because they didn't wear a hijab, Asians wouldn't mingle with

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The argument is racism is structural and it can't be oppression without structural power inbalances.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

There's a couple factors, the first being the denial that there is a "White Race" but if we're going down that road, shouldn't we get rid >

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 19

of the term "racism" since we're all part of the human race and it only overtook "prejudice" in common use during the 70s. A lesser problem>

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 15

is the concept of "reverse racism" which is it's own terminology nightmare, but implies that some people cannot be the target of racism. >

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 12
