What a PITA.

May 8, 2017 7:10 PM

I run my own business. I hire on folks who may need a spot whenever possible, and enjoy my position.

Dude was an ex-con hire. We sometimes get some theft, it's a writeoff, then we deal with the issue internally. But five digits worth of theft is a whole 'nother matter.

EDIT: By new guy I mean he's been with us 6 months, kept his nose clean.

One of the things he takes is the main 'office' PC, which has all the records on it. And of course I don't keep everything on 'the cloud' (I know I know I'll get around to it) and he took along my physical backup. Then again, he forgot that

and mine are METICULOUS. I got used to doing paper, and I like keeping them. It took me five minutes to track down his info, 10 minutes to take a tally of everything, then I

And now I have to burn half a day to fill out this paperwork.

If he had needed cash, I would have hooked him up interest free. Housing? Car fixed? We got guys who have worked here before, or even who work here now. But stealing that big just hurts my heart.

tl;dr: it's mostly in the memes.

It's always in the Memes.

Hey don't give up on people man. How inspiring that you're still so awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Just makes it worse for other ex cons who r trying to turn over a new leaf

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Hopefully that doesn't ruin it for the decent folk who need help. Sorry he was such an ass, op, but I'm glad you got it handled.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 2

He was probably ready to go back to prison

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, some guys just repeat offend to have a place to stay and get three squares a day. Some can't deal with life on the outside.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

You seem like a good person.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Sorry man, it helps you learn how to judge people. Show love and keep showing, the reserve stays inside to protect yourself/employees.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So what you're saying is that you're hiring? Hmu

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Only 10k? Pathetic

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Had someone steal from me before, and it sucks when you know you would have gladly helped out if they asked. Oh well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(admittedly mine was a Game Boy classic and a half dozen games, not 10 grand of supplies. D: )

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck that guy. Most aren't bad. My dad mainly hires ex-cons & petty criminals. Says they welcome the opportunity more than regular people.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I hated Ant-Man, but seeing the way Scott was basically begging for a job made me think about all those ex-cons that need it. My friend's-

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Brother may end up like Scott. I wish I could help him.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's good that you had the paper records, but what about fire or a flood? Lots of good offsite data backup services out there.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You can invest in a fire safe and put the papers in a water proof sealed case.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also. I take photos of important singed paperwork. In a locked file On my phone. I can acess it even if my phone is stolen.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And I can lock my phone remotely. Make it emit an alarm.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fact that you're not furious has given me a lot of respect for you. You sound like a genuinely nice, caring guy.

9 years ago | Likes 84 Dislikes 2

Maybe it's the cynic in me, but seeing "if they needed X, I would have given him X" so many times when stolen from usually comes 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 22

From people I know who would definitely never loan or give to people who need it. If OP is truthful, hats off to him.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 22

I get the feeling you assume those people wouldn't, and don't actually know them at all.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We've raised funs for accidents, rehab, guys getting home for a funeral. Jesus, stop thinking everybody is horrible.

9 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

But Ayn Rand said so!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

No she is the worst (and actually went against her own philosophy) But her style was pure capitalism. The rich deserve to be due to merit

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So, you hiring...?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wait why did you take the crew to lunch and not him too?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You need someone at the shop in case, you bring back food for the person left behind.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Gotcha, wasn't sure what work this was. Cheers!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey at least you got it back. My dad stole my contracting equipment because he went cray. I can't file a report because I don't want my -

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

Dad in jail because he's mentally unstable. So I Gtg chase jobs as a welder.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Have him committed then, get court ordered medication something or he will keep stealing from you and others until he steals from the wrong

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

person and ends up dead.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I need a welder! Where are you located?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

lol I'm in Tulsa OK

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What a pity.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good on you for giving him a chance. Where do you work?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You are a good guy @OP, really. It is sad that some fuckwits won't ever be able to be helped. Just too greedy. But keep at it! +1

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You seem nice, can you hire me?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looking for a new hire?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't change, don't let him steal your kindness

9 years ago | Likes 431 Dislikes 4

Omg, don't let him steal your kidneys!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love this, sums up what I was thinking as well.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

And there are people out there who would love an opportunity for a steady job with good people

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you be my friend? I don't need money or anything, but you sound like a guy I want to be friends with just in case.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Conniving con gets canned

No. That's conniving con gets it in the can.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Even better

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

My next door neighbor is like you. He's taken in ex-cons, dealers, 18 yr old kids with no where, and frequently he gets burned. Yesterday 1/

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

he won $30,000 from a scratch off. No one deserves it more than him.....well, maybe you.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

#OP you're like, a good guy. Props to you. Keep it up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Props for hiring ex-cons. A slightly higher risk maybe, but you're doing society a service.

9 years ago | Likes 3575 Dislikes 26

He gets a tax write off too...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just super sad they got burned for giving someone a chance.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work construction and they come and go. Easy cheap labor

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They should just hang repeat offenders like that though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A high school friend is an ex con and he was put on full time in half the time it takes other guys. Long hrs now but he likes it.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Stupid people make stupid decisions. Sigh.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

This. He's the restorative justice system we don't have. You won't win every time, but you never win if you don't try.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

"You miss all the ex-cons you don't hire" - Wayne Gretzky - @masterswasntworthit

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And hopefully it doesn't sour him on hiring more.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

What the hell is an ex-con(viction)? That's like a double plural.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

ex-con = convicted felon, recently released

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ex-convict. it is not. It means someone who got released from jail on not-minor charges.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Ex con here: sorry he was a dick head, some people actually turn their lives around

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I won't hire a con without crazy good reason. Plenty of friend biz owners have been screwed by cons.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 11

One of my best buddies at work is an ex-con. Used to burglarize houses for meth money. Now, he's got a stable job with benefits.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

He's white isn't he?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

(4) Fuck, I'm blind, now.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

(3) Look at all this whiteness holy shit:

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(2) I mean, US Merchant Mariners are really, really, painfully white. That's why we work on ships, y'know. Can't sunburn below deck.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He's a pasty white cracker from Oklahoma, yes. Actually, we're USMM sailors, probably the biggest white male sausage fest in existence.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This one's not an ex-con, though. Just a full-time con who was temping as a decent person.

9 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

Meh. People make mistakes - even big, huge mistakes - in a spur and out of temptation. A shame, but labeling them for good is not productive

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Dang this guy should have read that in the resume!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

actually an ex-con who was tempted into doing the wrong thing, as OP said he was fine for 6 months

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yeah and apparently he couldn't come to his boss for help or advices....seriously that's all it would have taken to avoid relapsing.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My brother was in prison for non-violent drug charges. He's 6 mo. sober, trying to get on his feet, and I'm so grateful for his employer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well your war on drugs totals to tou having 25% of the cons in the WORLD. That's quite a few ex-cons for no reason. Assuming 'Murica

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For real. my old man is an ex felon who spent over 14 years in prison over many years. Less than a year from his release he's a foreman 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

for a roofing company makin top dollar, cuz a guy there gave him a chance despite his record. Every con deserves a chance at a clean start.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If a con can't get a job. a con is going to go back to being a con. So I agree with you.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

But this con got a job and still went back to being a con.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

This just in! Some people with jobs still commit crimes! He wouldn't have had a choice if he hadn't gotten a job.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This just in! It IS possible to live without committing crimes even if you don't have a job!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Id say its less a risk. The ex cons are bad ar getting away while the non cons have never gotten caught.

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 12

What about the neo-cons? Any love for them?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Fuck no, they're the worst thing that ever happened to America. All the bible thumping with none of the fiscal responsibility

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Chill, I was being sarcastic.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could argue most non-cons haven't committed crimes in first place though. Still worth giving people a chance.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

You could argue I made a rather obvious joke.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

EVERYONE has committed crimes (sooo many laws). It's fun to pretend we're better and discriminate against those who have been caught though.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

Bit of a difference between pirating songs and burglarizing a private home. Everyone's a douche; only a matter of degrees and specifics.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

And maybe that felon is in for pirating songs.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I just wish the prison system was more interested in rehabilitation than maintaining a revolving door for profit.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Actually a lot of prisons offer training in trades and even GED and college courses and have, for decades. But some are just beyond help.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

profit?? in which country?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Private companies make a lot of money off of the prison system but I don't know how prisons supposedly make money

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Prisons also leverage inmates for cheap labour where they charge normal rates but don't pay the inmates most of it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh private companies make a ton, sure, but the prisons themselves are like any other govt-run service - a money drain.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

$10,000 would buy an awful lot of tootsie rolls.

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

Damn, I was coming here to make that comment!!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

ikr like at least 7

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well put. Great use of memes. +1. Sorry this dude trespassed your kindness. What a schlemiel.

9 years ago | Likes 992 Dislikes 9

And OP is a mensch!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Would you mind defining "shlemiel" and if you know it, "shlemoz"

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Hasenpfeffer Incorporated?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Were gonna do it!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Give us any chance will take it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Give us any rule... oh wait

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A schlemiel is the guy who spills his soup at a fancy party. A schlemazel is the guy he spills it on.

9 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Jerry is both the schlemiel and schlemazel

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I learned this from Ron Swanson

Don't stop believing in people you beautiful bastard!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there's a way to make this happen, ladies for @OP - bullets for said thief

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Yes we do. Keep it up op!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The world needs less people

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're right, we've become so numb.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We need more people to pour into him to take him from where he is now down the line to who he was made to be. He is who many of us were.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree. You gave him the opportunity to better his life, and instead he robs you. That's messed up.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do this too. I've been burned 100% of the time. Hard not to get cynical.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I sincerely wonder if the only reason he did it was because he thought no one would legitimately help him or if he just wanted more money.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

More likely the adrenaline rush from pulling it off.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was a people like him when I was his age. Dumbass bullshit bullhead. I hope this'll straighten him out.

9 years ago | Likes 1526 Dislikes 6

Good response. The world doesn't need fewer people like him, it needs more help to change people cause we're all born idiots at first.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So glad people like you exist! Keep being awesome OP!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your username dude, pure gold.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Please explain how it works, I literally can't grasp the mindset.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This happened to my dad a few times trying to help people. So I understand where you are coming from.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

At least you realise that this will straighten him out more than you being nice to him.... That's what made him steal in the first place

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know its hard to be a tough boss, but in my experience every employee who is offered cash/housing/car just steals from you a little later.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

not your fault man, my dad does the same and one of our most trusted guys got hooked on meth. long story short he hasnt been seen since.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope he can hear this from you. It will go much further than a conviction. As you implied it's probably a cry for help

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

I give The Speech to the new hires on. Sadly he's always been isolated and we had worried about drugs but you can't force someone to bottom

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

I'm glad you have figured out life and become a mentor. You are the type of person that truly changes the world. Hopefully he sees that

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Probably not. Incarceration usually just reaffirms the ideas that made them offend in the first place.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wanna downvote cuz of negativity but upvote cuz I know it's true. They don't have spinning doors but jails are pretty much hotels.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More like a motel. They don't call jail "the pokey" for nothing.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My great grand uncle was a bank robber. Ended up spending so much time in jail it was easier to just get arrested for a free meal than work.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

U sOund like a stand up person. ..kudos to u my good man or woman

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tons of respect for you, OP

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The eternal optimist, my heart hopes the same of everyone. I wish I had people like this to be around, instead of hateful hillbillies.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Maybe the reason you don't is you don't deal with folks beyond a dumb stereotype of hateful hillbillies. Says a lot about you.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

@OP's a straight shooter.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I have a picture of you in my mind like Clint Eastwood in Gran Tarino
