(note: Carrol Burnett's show was before my time)
In spite of the humor and stereotypical nature of the show (across the board), Katey Sagal/Peggy Bundy was the most outspoken, personally confident, and IMO funniest woman television character of the era. More than the show itself changing TV comedy, I think, she set the bar (which was set artificially low by television producers) for women to be more than "a placeholder" or "a thing to look at" on a comedy sitcom. Even though she wasn't Al, she was 1 or 1A in the "household," which in and of itself changed the standard.

Without her, do we have the same Seinfeld...? Or Friends? Or even Sex in the City?

Still would

All time favorite tv mom ever. I still plan to be her for Halloween someday.

Her character in Futurama is also great. If you haven't watched it, I recommend!

Do you get asked that oddly specific question often?

HRW when you get nearly decapitated by a helicopter's spinning main rotor blades.

I liked her better in Futurama.

Same. That's where she really got to be funny.

I've "fancied a bito o' that" myself.

Al was a lucky man.

Bon Bons

Never understood why Al thought it was burden to have sex with her.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Because she was a selfish lazy bum. Peggy is not a good person, she treats everyone horribly.

My all time crush still love her more than ever !

She also worked as a backing vocalist for Bob Dylan, Tanya Tucker, Bette Midler, Gene Simmons, Molly Hatchet and Olivia Newton-John

Al set it for me. His egotistical, misogynistic tendencies set me on the righteous path of NO MA’AM enlightenment

He was for me. No matter his wailing, crude, rude, misogynistic ways. He loved his family and would put himself in harm for them at times.

FWIW Roseanne was the next breakthrough, setting the Barr even higher.

Boooooooo terrible joke +1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

setting the Barr wider you mean

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I am also angry at myself for not listing her show ahead of Seinfeld. I like Roseanne more than any of the other shows

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

It was realistic. Their love was real, their fights were real. I hope they capture that unpolished, genuine spirit in the remake.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She was able to *create* her character, and the sitcom, and it was a more "realistic" version of the Bundy household, it seems.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

I don't know why you're being downvoted for this. Katey Sagal is more prolific but Roseanne was real in ways the Bundys weren't.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I deserve scorn for forgetting Roseanne in the original post, but that green light may not happen without MWC

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nice, I see what you did there

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Roseanne, no question for me. Peggy Bundy was outspoken but minimised. & she was very much an objectified thing to look at IMO. Was she ever

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

actually funny? I don’t recall a single incident. We watched that show as a family & I bloody hated it. It was entirely stereotypical.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also I'm fully versed on Futurama and Lee Lemon.

Not so much on Sons of Anarchy, but I heard she's bad-ass awesomesauce in that, too.

I hated her character on Sons of anarchy but i love her as an actress

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Despised Gemma, but awesome actress.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's because she did great.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Rewatching the series on Netflix as we speak, it was absolutely epic. She was outstanding throughout
