It’s the classic cheap/addictive/healthy triangle.

I find pushing a boulder up hill to watch it roll back down is a sort of fun the first few hundred times.

Have you tried masturbation?

When it's depression and suicide, no hobby is addicting enough

Cooking ….

Unfortunately it must be treated as any other addiction. It is specifically designed to stimulate dopamine release at higher levels than normal stimuli. It's something that will take work, practice, and probably some exercise.

Making bracelets with paracord was fun. Uses up material, so it's not like it's free, but it's also fun to just learn various knots and weaves (and then untie the cords to use them again if you don't have much).

Crochet. It doesn’t have to be hats or scarves. I started with finger puppets. Amigurumi plushies are also addicting to make. (And collect)

I collect and hand-collate non-sports card sets.

Start drawing. All you need is pen(cil) and paper.

You don't gotta be good, you just need to keep it up.

Go to the library. Get a library card. Read actual books.

Writing books, assuming you do your own editing and formatting. If you pay to have this stuff done its like $1.5k per book when all's said and done. So far I've made more money than I've lost though, so there's that...

Writing. Even if you just start with "I am sitting here trying to come up with something to write, but alas I cant think of anything, so now I'm just talking to myself, but I'm writing so I'm somehow sane doing this. Especially when compared to the things I do when...."

I recall a powerwrite exercise you have to write what you think for several minutes, and if there's a pause or no clear stream of consciousness write "powerwrite". I had a powerwrite trail off at the edge of the page and the final e looked so pathetic I got the giggles for the rest of the time, and wrote about that.

Podcasts while doing crochette, cross stitch, walking, drinking tea, meal prepping. I recommend "The Rest Is History".

I have several great options. You'll pick up your phone to research things about them. I't a vicious circle. There is no escape.

I'm a master of the fine art of turning sticks into slightly smaller, moderately pointier sticks.

D&D is cheap until you become either a dice goblin or environmental mini builder

4 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

You take a chance on roleplaying a goblin.

Someone who collects dice for the hell of it. Not even necessarily rare or particularly valuable sets, just collecting dice for the sake of having a lot of dice. Yes I have a red set, yes I have a red set in this particular shade, YES I have a red set in this color shade and size, but the 1s on THIS set are actually tiny pictograms of a guy getting kicked in the nuts, so OBVIOUSLY I have to buy this set.

4 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's not all of my dice, just what fits in that rolling tray.

Also that was a bulk purchase, normally around $30 on Temu level sites or $45 on amazon

Inside: Writing. Drawing. Painting with tea or coffee. Walks/hiking. Observing people/nature/architecture, then write, draw, or read about what you've observed. Bodyweight exercises (all you need is you). Sewing (visible mending)/knitting/crochet. Also, Reddit has a ton of archived threads on this subject!
