If your last name is Hitler, George Washington would be the perfect 1st and middle name. As far as possible from Adolf.

When Irish TV host Gay Byrne was in talks to do a US show, they asked if he could maybe use his middle name - which turned out to be Mary

I imagine he probably changed his name when ww2 started. Or at least when the states entered it.

As an Ohioan from that area, there’s a couple roads named Hitler. Every year, there’s someone who gets upset and makes a scene for nothing.?

There’s actually a Hitler Rd in Circleville Ohio named after this family. They seem determined to keep it.

Naming their kids after Adolf Hitler was very popular. My grandfathers middle name was Adolf and he HATED it.

Dr. Gay Hitler sounds like an Austin Powers villain.

The films weren't THAT that edgy. Well maybe if they had run them through the ringer more. Or if the Adam Sandler crowd made a sequel

It's like they actively worked to take the sting out of their last name.

How much would it suck to absolutely HAVE to change your name, because of someone with the same name was THAT bad and known the world over?
AGRIADR
It would be an AWESOME SitCom. He would have a wacky neighbor names Sid Stalin with a neighbor Pete Poland between them. Hilarity ensues.
Thoxem
why are there not more people with the surname hitler?
I don’t believe it was very common to begin with, but a lot of folks I know of swore off kids or changed their names.
I was just thinking you would pretty much HAVE to.

My grandad was named Adolf Roosevelt [our last name] because he was born during WW2 and his parents wanted their bases covered.

In others news, in Namibia there's a local politician named Adolf Hitler Uunona. He insists he has no plans for world domination.

Wonder why they never changed their names. Was it extra tricky at the time?
Hitler's actual relatives living in America changed their name after the war (presumably soon thereafter).
Only /after/? Not as soon as the whole genocide thing got started?
SpaceballsTheComment
The nazis weren't very public about the whole genocide thing. Most people didn't "know" until the camps were liberated.
IIRC, the Hitler who moved to America hated Adolf, and used his last name as a platform to make public speeches denouncing Adolf and Nazis.
Good for that guy!
Mack1986
Hitler had I think a nephew maybe? Who served in the US navy in ww2
He also had a biological son, or at least the evidence heavily points that way.
DisgruntledFerret
Yeah, William Hitler wrote an article called "Why I Hate My Uncle" in 1938 and then changed his name after WW2 so Hitler's name would die.
saxon2060
Lol. He hated him because of something do with business. He tried to cozy up to Uncle Adolf before the war.
Haha yeah, he needed a job so he tried to blackmail Adolf Hitler with the fact that Hitler's grandpa might've been jewish. What a mad lad.
(A rich jewish guy might've had an affair with Hitler's grandma, a maid. We may never know the truth, but the actual truth's not important.)
(I think George Washington and Dr. Gay Hitler are unrelated entirely to Hitler's bloodline, and it's just an unfortunate coincidence.)
TheZommie
unfortunate coincidence? there are MEMES 80 years in the future that they were building up to
Fasrill
Wasn't Adolf Hitler also unrelated to the Hitler bloodline, due to his surname being changed to Hitler at some point in his childhood?
Yes and no: Hitler's dad was born Alois Schicklgruber, his mother's surname, but had it changed it to match his father, Johann Hiedler.
(Spelling was a bit more devil-may-care before dictionaries were invented, even with surnames.)
