A study by Simons and Levin (1998) found that approximately 50% of the participants approached in the study didn't notice that the person they were talking to changed! This is a phenomenon known as "change blindness" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Change_blindness ).
Although these results sound pretty hard to believe, it's actually not that easy to detect changes in your environment...even when you're looking for them! When participants were shown stills from this video, about 80% of them said they would be able to detect the change. However, when they didnt know what changes were made, only about 10% of them actually noticed the change (Levin et al. 2000).
Try it for yourself.
This first one is pretty easy. See how long it takes you to detect the change between the two alternating photos…
