"The Biden administration is launching a beta website for its new income-driven student loan repayment plan, allowing borrowers to begin submitting applications for the program as federal student loan payments are set to resume in October."

"The SAVE, or Saving on a Valuable Education, plan was finalized after the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden’s student debt forgiveness initiative in June. It marks a significant change to the federal student loan system that could lower monthly loan payments for some borrowers and reduce the amount they pay back over the lifetime of their loans."

"Federal student loan borrowers can access the beta website at https://studentaid.gov/idr/. The enrollment process is estimated to take 10 minutes, and many sections can be automatically populated with information the government has on hand, including tax returns from the IRS, administration officials said."

"Borrowers will only need to apply one time, not yearly as past systems require, which officials said would make this plan “much easier to use.” Users will receive a confirmation email once the application is submitted, and the approval process, which can be tracked online, is expected to take a few weeks."

Wow, #1. That is all

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Education should be 100% but barring that this could help a lot of people. Keep in mind that income based calculations don't generally factor in cost of living where you are so you might end up owing more monthly than you'd think.

Yeah the double the poverty level thing means... Poverty. Can't live here on that without roommates

Fantastic. Now maybe he can abolish all federal student loan debt.

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 10

He literally tried.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

He didn’t. He could have abolished it. Instead he put it to Congress

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

No. His first attempt was an executive order. SCOTUS struck it down because two whiny shits sued on the grounds that they didn't qualify for enough. And apparently that constitutes legal standing. SCOTUS basically said EO's can't affect the budget (wildly unprecedented bullshit but what's new) so it had to go through congress where it got neutered.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yes an EO that included private and federal loans up to 20k. It did not abolish or attempt to abolish all federal student debt. I’m sorry you’re confused

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

OK so given that this EO was struck down, it's pretty fucking academic to say that he didn't ask for even more forgiveness.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Turns out he can't.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Higher Education Act of 1965: “the law grants a presidential administration, via the Education Secretary, authority to "enforce, pay, compromise, waive, or release" Turns out he can, he just didn’t.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Okay, so what exactly was it that he was trying to do that SCOTUS struck down?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Biden’s plan to eliminate up to 20k of student debt (held by federal or private lenders.)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If that 1965 law is such a slam dunk, then why isn't he allowed to do that?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Supreme Court blocked him from doing that

2 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 2

They can’t. He can do it with an executive order.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 21

He made that executive order and it got blocked.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No he didn’t. He made an executive order to cancel up to 20k of private and federal debt. Not just federal. The details matter

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No he can't--that was the meat of the SCOTUS decision. It amounts to an expenditure, which he can't do without Congress.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

He can, he just didn’t. He didn’t even try for Federal loans. The Higher Education Act of 1965 grants the executive the ability to abolish Federal loans. That’s why Chuck Schumer and Elizabeth Warren both said “he can abolish them with the stroke of a pen.” He just didn’t and went the route for congressional approval which failed. Because obviously it would with republicans. It’s almost like that was his goal all along

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Looks like The Higher Education Act of 1965 was Plan B, since implementing it is not as simple as you're making it out to be. That said, his admin has indicated they'll be using its provision next: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/10/your-money/biden-student-loans-cancellation.html

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Which would be undone by the next POTUS. It’s not a viable option when a single party in the US exists to just break stuff in order to make people suffer more. We need to either legislate this or force a change to SCOTUS.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Right, same thing happened with Obamacare.
