Shouldn't CNN have a reporter standing on the beach saying stuff like: "Look there are big waves".

The ocean cannot greet us with a "Hello!"...it just waves.

Since LOTR, every time I see a huge wave I expect them to turn horse shaped..

Each wave is at least 7 glasses of water.

5000 washing machines or 150 olympic pools.

Wow the Detroit River has changed

The ocean has always matched my own mental rhythm. I grew up on Cape Cod, my house is 800' ft from salt water, and I can STILL spend all day just staring at the waves.

If you ever wondered how the Pacific Ocean got its name, it was from someone who was comparing it to this.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

I thought it was the response to someone demanding "Name an ocean, and be specific!"

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My son calls it the specific ocean and it's adorable. Lately he's been occasionally dropping the s, so he's getting there. :)

I didn't notice the surfers at first. I was just watching the waves being all majestic and shit and appreciating how a whole bunch of people were hanging out watching it irl.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I watched for awhile in wonder and then said to myself “some idiot has probably tried to surf that” and HOLY HELL are those little dots surfers..?!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Surfers and wave runners who toe them in. At least 5 or 6 from what I can see There looks to be a RHIB too close by

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There’s only one surfer that can handle a wave like that!

“That's Bodhi....they call him the Bodhisattva.”

NOT the remake. Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, and Gary fucking Busey.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It made no sense to remake a gem like this. Same with Toto’s Africa, Weezer.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Weazer made Africa worse. Like We are the World worse.

"We'll get him when he comes back in!"

He's not coming back.

The camera makes them look a lot bigger than normal waves because they are scary fucking ginormous compared to normal waves.

maybe this is in Portugal? something about a seasonal swell combined with a unique beach topography...

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nazare in Portugal, yes. The cliffs are angled just right so two waves interact with each other to create a single double sized wave. The place is nuts.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are the large waves bigger than a large boulder the size of a large boulder?

2 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 2

Large waves are about 15 washing machines tall.

Only if it’s been soaking in boulder.

holy hell, people are surfing that

2 years ago | Likes 156 Dislikes 0

Highly recommend the documentary about this on HBO, 100 Foot Wave. It's about Garrett McNamara and the history of Nazare as a big wave destination. Doesn't matter if you don't care for sports/surfing at all. It's just fascinating.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bitchin' gnarl, bra.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Would have been surprised if people weren’t surfing that.

2 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Each and every year. It’s quite a big event in the surf scene :)

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

nazare, biggest in the world

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

86’ is the record there! 29 washing machines! 172 bananas!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are there surfers on it in the video? I'm on my phone and I guess they're too small to see.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

yes - Look for the white water trails right at 16 seconds. You can see the surfer break from the tow in from the waverunner who then proceeds to climb the wave and ride the shoulder. They keep an eye for the surfer to rescue them in case they wipeout. You'll see the surfer ride the face of the wave and out to the shoulder. They're more clearly visible as a black dot over the white water in the final seconds of the vid.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah I’m on my phone too, they’re hard to see. The tops of the wave before it crashes, they surf left to right because this is above the equator.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thanks, I'll watch it on my laptop when I get a chance!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know that not all waves break in the same direction just because they're above or below the equator, right?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was making a very lame joke.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My bad for taking it at face value (in my defence, I've met people who actually thought it true)
