Fort Knox
Fort Knox, located in Kentucky, is an Army post and is also home to the US Bullion Depository where the US keeps thousands of tons of gold, and important historical documents. Not only is this place extremely guarded, but it’s also protected by a 22-ton blast door and more security cameras than you could probably find on-line. (source: Wikipedia)
Area 51
Probably the most well known on the list…. Area 51 is a top secret aerospace development and testing site located in Nevada. It may not look that well guarded, but you better believe if you step foot past the warning signs you’ll have people on you in seconds…. even photography is prohibited. The area is said to be installed with hundreds of special senors, which can detect any movements in the area. (source: HowStuffWorks)
The Mormon Church’s Secret Vaults
These secret vaults contain genealogical and historical records for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The vault is excavated 600 feet into the north side of Little Cottonwood Canyon, located in Utah. Not only are they heavily guarded, but are also rumored to be protected by temperature control, as well as motion and heat sensors. (source: GeekStroke)
Federal Reserve Bank in New York
Roughly about 25% of the entire world’s gold is said to be stored here…. The vault itself is eighty feet below street level and fifty feet below sea level, and the perimeter of the building is guarded by well-trained marksmen. (source: Wiki)
Bold Lane Car Park
You won’t have to worry much about car thieves when you leave your car parked here. This parking garage in Derbyshire, England is one of the safest places to park your car in the world. The lot uses a sophisticated web including CCTV cameras, panic buttons, entry doors and bar-coded tickets. If the alarm does go off, the whole place goes into lockdown mode. (source: The Telegraph)
Tumen River
This river makes up part of the boundary between Russia and North Korea. Within a mile, you can go from North Korea, through China and end up in Russia, which makes this a good place for those wishing to defect. It’s is highly and well guarded by North Korean soldiers. (source: BBC News)
Korean Demilitarised Zone
The Korean Demilitarised Zone is a strip of land dividing North and South Korea. It is one of the most heavily guarded borders in the world, stretching 160 miles in length and 2.5 miles in width. Because of the high defense surrounding the border, it has actually now become a nature pressure. (source: Wiki)
The Greenbrier
Built roughly 720 feet into the hillside under The Greenbrier’s West Virginia Wing, the bunker is an astonishing 112,544 square feet in size. Underneath lies the real secret…. a 25-ton nuclear blast door, with tunnels behind which create a nuclear bunker that is filled with supplies for members of the U.S. Congress to weather out a nuclear attack. (source:The Greenbrier)
Haven Co
Haven Co is a 120-by-50-foot anti-aircraft platform seven miles off the British coast and 60 feet above the water in the North Sea. It was a self-contained, hypersecure data fortress, and the only people ever allowed in were authorized personnel, investors, and members of Britain’s royal family. It was apparently closed down in 2008, and the secret is to why is kept secure. (source: Mother Jones)
Cheyenne Mountain
The Cheyenne Mountain complex was, at one point, the command center for the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Space Command missions. It’s so well guarded that the tunnel is protected by solid granite and reinforced steel. However, NORAD has since moved its operations to another location. (source: Wiki)

I drive by the Lds record vault all the time to snowboard. It's not really guarded, but I'm pretty sure it would withstand a nuke in SLC.

So did mine, but he never gave my cub scout troop a tour. Every Xmas, we'd go and answer the Santa tracking phone calls. So much fun.

He showed me the door to level 28, but said kids aren't allowed to see the gate.

Hundreds of special senors?! Retarded mexicans guard area 51??

Special senors? So Area 51 employs lots of retarded male Mexicans? No wonder it's heavily guarded.

The Mormon vaults aren't secret. They house genealogical records & church documents http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granite_Mountain_%28Utah%29
BatsuitsNipples
Why do members of the LDS church care a lot about genealogy? The church isn't even that old, so it's not like their ancestors were mormon.
kokell
We believe that family ties can last through eternity. We want our family to be together in heaven, and believe that ordinances like (1/?)
kokell
baptism are required to enter heaven. Because not everyone had opportunities to hear about Christ in their life (or receive baptism), we (2)
kokell
do genealogy to research our ancestors, get baptized by proxy for them (since you can't baptize a spirit, or corpse), and give them a (3)
kokell
chance to accept that baptism or not (ie: it isn't a forced conversion or anything). Also, learning about your own family history is cool
BreakdanceFighter
Well, at least according to the LDS church. I drove by it this morning on my way up LCC.
DarthFutuza
I suppose it is always more fun to imagine hidden things. They must be keeping Satan chained up in there and not telling anyone.

Haven Co...aka Principality of Sealand being rented as a data center in international waters.
bax498
And I sincerely doubt the members of the royal family would go to sealand... The principality, not the water park.
bax498
There were only 4 naval forts, 1 was blown up in the 60's and the other 3 became radio stations. I wouldnt say they were "heavily guarded"
calway
True, though some Germans thought it'd be fun to attack Sealand. They were all, disarmed, captured and ransomed back to Germany. lol
sloganhero
Isn't the guy living their trying to get status as the smallest nation on earth?
daelith
The royal family of Sealand has been trying for years. Unfortunately, last I checked they lacked sufficient recognitions.
sloganhero
Yeah if I remember correctly, the closest they have to a legitimate claim is that Germany sent an ambassador over some issue. Forgot what
itsamazing
is it really Sealand? It looked like it but OP didn't mention it

I used to work there; as a few people have already said, it's almost entirely genealogical documents. There is nothing crazy in there. AMAA
badalalala
Fellow Utahn here. Do they store the documents there because the elements can't get to them and ruin the documents?
adudeabiding
Basically - also the temperature control is b/c some of the documents are super old and will fall apart/break in certain conditions
psychoelectrickitty
Don't they also keep any first copies of the BOM there, too? So I've heard... not sure if it's true.

Mormon here. I admire your gusto. Just fyi, every Mormon Q&A I've seen on Imgur has died in a sea of downvotes/insults. Pearls before swine.

Of course I've heard the term. I've also seen the way people treat people when they feel like it applies to the other. Not well.

Why don't people deserve to ask questions that are at a more complex level of the religion?

DavidBrooker
Depends what you mean by declassified. None of its activities have been declassified, but its at least acknowledged to exist.
brianclementsvatua
Exactly. They acknowledge it's existence but they don't reveal all of the activities that happen there.
DavidBrooker
That acknowledgement has only happened recently in its history though: it took a lawsuit from former employees suffering health problems.
