Well...maybe not never.

Okay, here's the TLDR version. I was driving back to the office from an off-site meeting when a cop, who was on his way to call with no lights or siren, decided to t-bone me at 65mph (in a 35mph zone). My little 2014 Ford Focus S took the hit like a champ and let me hobble home to my wife and kids. Cop lived, I lived, both cars dead.....all in all a pretty okay outcome after I got off the crutches.

What happened to the cop? Did he cite himself for reckless driving?

A few weeks ago I was stopped waiting to make a left turn when some girl plowed into me at ~50mph. Hardly felt it, Ford Focus OP.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get a good one once the lawsuit is settled.....

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

This is how you TL;DR: Dumbass cop going 2x speed limit T-boned my car, no fatalities.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably shouldn't be publicly telling people about the bum transmission. Ya know, you might want to collect insurance and whatnot.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

"Where was my focus?" Cop probably

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My brother got T-boned by a Yukon on is focus doing about 60. He didn’t walk away, but he’s still with us because of that though little car

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Had a 2006 Focus with a manual trans. Sold it with 200k miles on the clock. Drove perfect. Not shit cars

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No lights and no sirens prob responding to a call in which the lights and sirens would of gave them away. example a burglary in progress

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Glad you're ok. That wasn't a 65 mph collision though. He may have been going 65 before he hit the brakes, but he wasn't going 65 at impact.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

agree i have seen high speed side impact collisions before that looks like it stopped at the cop cars bull bars so maybe 40mph.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Obviously now you take legal action against the department?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Against their insurance for a settlement. You could take legal action against the officer for negligence I guess, but the insurance has the $

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll never dog on Volvo' s after walking away from my 70 mph crash on the highway. I still want another one.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

10 years, 96k+ miles, driver side wrecked in a side swipe and rebuilt. Still get 28-32mpg with no problems. Love my focus.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I took a hit like that in a Pontiac Sunbird. I got to ride in a helicopter after that, shame I can't remember all of it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, kinda weird, I was hit by a retired police officer.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ford Fusion rolled at 70mph. Came out with just some scratched crawling out through glass. They are indeed safe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Enjoy getting a ticket for hitting a cop.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Unlikely. The report has to be filed with a different department and all police departments have insurance so why not admit fault?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've known three seperate incidences where a police vehicle has hit an occupied vehicle, EVERY time the witnesses retracted their statements

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It will go against the officer's record if he did anything wrong. It could also be a PR issue if they did not follow procedure.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you get arrested then @OP?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Nope, not at fault for the wreck thankfully

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who police's the police?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A different department. Maybe sheriff's office or state troopers. Not much difference than a regular wreck.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good fucking luck getting a proper settlement out of this. Seriously. Lawyer up and be prepared for maximum bullshit

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I work in subrogation. Police departments are insured. No reason to think this will be any more challenging than a normal wreck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

anecdote: a colleague's wife was struck by a cop [car] and they're framing *everything they can* to twist the narrative to her fault.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a good lawyer has helped them - hell, they edited the dash cam footage! literally cut 90s out!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not because it's a ford. It's because minimum safety standards have gone up alot in the last 10 years

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

...and manufacturers must keep up with it to make a sale. Exactly. If it was Kia, Hyundai, etc. the result would be the same.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My first car was a 05 focus, never had an issue with it other than normal upkeep. Kept it for 9 years.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I had an 04 for ten years, that thing was a beast. Only costs were brakes and RMM after 120K miles

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My sister's 05 survived her learning how to drive. I drove a 17 rental and it was my favorite rental I've ever driven.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My first car was a 95 contour, that thing had issues. my 09 focus hasn't had any major problems since i got it (new).

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

@OP so who is at fault?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP your lack of reply makes me think thus didn't happen

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

375 comments, can't get to them all. I had to assume 20% of liability due the police cruiser having the right of way, but speeding with no

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

lights/siren put the majority of fault on the officer. My lawyer is handling all of that.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2013 titanium. Been in the shop 3 times for..... transmission.

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

Had 2012 Focus sued Ford through lemon law got all of my money back, was a six month process

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know it sounds crazy but you know, transmissions are such a brand new technology.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same car. Clutch has caused so many problems...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 more time i can go after them for lemon law. Damn thing stranded me in the middle if nowhere. Lemon law differs by state

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clutchin these nuts causes so many problems.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Send the pics and story off to Ford. They may pay you for your story as a marketing ploy.

8 years ago | Likes 191 Dislikes 3

While a good idea, I doubt Ford wants to touch that he got hit by a police car...

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Especially considering there is a very good chance it was also a Ford.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They could simply exclude the copness of the other car.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had nightmares that started like this for a couple of weeks after the crash, lol

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Built Ford tough ;)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And that's why I drive a Ford, my company's trucks are mostly Fords, and one of the two Chevys is no longer with us.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know if it's true but I've heard of police stations letting people pick from their impounded cars when they've hit someone.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I would be shocked if that was true. Police departments are insured, it doesn't affect them any more than any other at fault driver.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They do auction them off so it might be easier than raising their insurance premiums

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As that could be construed as bribery to avoid reporting I would be shocked if departments actually do this.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep, mine let me walk away without a scratch

8 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 1

Well there’s your problem! You got a leaky radiator.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Knew someone who had this model, I believe. The frames use to break in half right behind drivers seat. Sending backseat people flying off.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Honestly depending on if their buckled and where the other car hit that could have been safer. Probably not intentional but could be safer

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Story?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Pulled into turn lane another driver was using as high speed lane

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Aww, right when you had a full jug of wiper juice. :(

8 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

Wiper juice, I like it.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

*Headlight fluid

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Right!?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looking at that damage, did they even try to stop before they made contact w/ your car? That's a hell of a shear.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it gonna be ok

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

No, but I still have the Ford "medallion" from the wreck

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’ll buff right out.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They tend to look like death even from lowspeed collisions. Was in a 30mph T-bone (dude ran a stop sign in front of me) and looked like that

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Worse than that, actually. Was a truck, so only my car took any damage.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The focus has a really good safety rating... shit engines and transmissions thou

8 years ago | Likes 278 Dislikes 3

Nope, what yo ,what are you talking about?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shit as in low performance or shit as in has to be fixed every day that ends with "day".

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Build quality and reliability... performance isn't too bad kick the arse out of most cars

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just traded mine in for a 4Runner. I miss the gas mileage a ton though.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I somehow totaled my Focus on the freeway where it was completely mangled but I came out without a scratch. I have a deep love for the Focus

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2012 Focus here, I took it in 4 times for transmission, sued Ford through lemon law, got all my money back and got 2017 Mazda CX5

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My 05 was a champ, how dare you say that. 179,000 miles with an alternator, fuel pump and oil changes. Was a 2.0 Duratec and 5 speed manual.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amazing fuel economy for a domestic tho

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Fiestas got the same trans, had to take it in to get the TCI reflashed

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Easy to be safe because it never drives anywhere.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Had two 2003 Ford Focus Station. First took an impact to the wheel and I barely felt it. Second did 100 000 in 3 years. Called it The Tank.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

good point lol

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had a 2004 automatic zx5 I got used from some lady, drove it for about 5 years and never had a transmission or nasty engine issue.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

U had a good one..you should of keep it they are rare and will become collectables lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The automatics feel like they are going to shake apart when shifting.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Definetly, the European model is much better build quality but the car in general just sacrificed quality to make it affordable

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Having worked in a Ford dealer for 12 years. Best advice, drive it like you stole it. Think of it this way. It's got 6 gears and it's...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

main goal is to get through them to the correct gear as fast as possible to maximize fuel efficiency. Slow accelerations from a stop...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

(Including stop and go traffic, stop signs, etc) keeps the clutch depressed because rpms are not where they need to be for the shift and...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

cause extreme premature wear. The transmissions fail because it's the clutches that fail.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh! But safely! Please.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

i have an older focus and the tranny is indeed shit :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I dunno, my dad's Ford Focus has lasted 13 years so far. Only thing he's needed to do to the engine was replace a head gasket. Was used b4

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Sometimes you get lucky.. I've seen people with cars for 20 years and only thing they get done is yearly service and tyres lol

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

New focus tranny are different. I would know we replace the clutch everyday

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A pretty significant repair

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saw a whole street of cars get FLOATED by a flash flood. The focus drove off. I was impressed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don’t minimize a head gasket repair, those are costly

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don't think it's as expensive if you do it yourself

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm, guess I got lucky. I've had mine 11 years and the only major repair I've had to make is a new alternator.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lucky fucker lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apparently so lol. It's the only car I've ever had, so stupid me didn't realize that wasn't normal.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also I love your username.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The auto transmission is notorious for acting wonky, but I've had a manual for many years now and it has been very reliable so far.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

mine has absolutely no horsepower whatsoever.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you want to get some power back run some injector cleaner through the engine.. it's about £5 all you do is pour it into fuel tank

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It cleared all the dirt out and will definetly make an improvement

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You got T-Boned by a cop car, so who do you call?

The state police. Seriously. Get law enforcement from a different jurisdiction on scene or you can get screwed.

8 years ago | Likes 203 Dislikes 1

Yup I can vouch for that one. Ass still hurts from being screwed so hard from a small town PD

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's required (at least here) for a different branch to file the report

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

How do I request that? 911?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was cut-off by a cop at 60mph 13 months ago. Totaled my civic and my fiancé and I got banged up pretty good. Got screwed in the settlement

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

I'm a bit confused... You totaled your fianceé?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 8

You’re incompetent.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why did you accept the settlement if you were getting screwed? Police departments are insured like any business with vehicles.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Being my first collision, the county treasurer knew I had no clue what to do. He ‘helped’ fill the form out, concluding in us breaking even.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Being my first vehicle accident, the county treasurer knew I had no idea how to handle it. They “helped” me fill out the settlement form.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Woops, thought this didn’t post. Bad service!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The county treasurer should not be involved in your insurance settlement. What state do you live in?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well he handled the insurance claims of police/fire/forest service. Arizona.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. All cities carry insurance. Typically most people will be taking to the insurance company and never a city or county employee.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My insurance basically had nothing to do because I had liability only coverage. They just kept hounding me to get settlement done.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah you could be looking at a pretty big payday, if you are litigious. Sounds like the cop should have had his siren on and was driving...

8 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 1

EMT here. If the ambulance lights and siren are off, we're treated the same as a civilian vehicle. That cop is FUCKED

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just get a lawyer to call them on your behalf. They'll settle immediately with a fat pay day for you. It's cheaper than court and publicity.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Call whom?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's called code 2, it means no lights or sirens. Typically used when there's an armed robbery. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Normally we run lights until a few blocks away from the destination but we're supposed to hit the manual siren when entering intersections.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

No should about it.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

yep

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Without a siren or lights a cop car should be treated like any other civilian vehicle

8 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

correct.,. in fact the cop is criminally liable for driving at that speed without his lights and siren on.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Not sure but the officers surety bond might cover it. Though the government can and does pay for damages on things like this.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I work in subrogation. The police department's insurance will cover OP. Government isn't self-insured, they usually use Sedgwick or similar

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
