Easiest way is look on the side, near the side mirrors. On an 86/FRS you'll see a badge with the number 86. On the BRZ , there a grill.

Yea, literally under the hood it's the same car. SOs brother has an FRS and the engine says Subaru on it. Scion is Toyotas "sporty" offset.
