One of my prized possessions, the Alpha Black Lotus. This is perhaps the most sought after card in Magic the Gathering. It was a gift from my wife on our honeymoon.

1992 me is like "Deeeeeeeeeyam"

Hot damn. I used to work at Card Kingdom in Seattle, and even me just seeing this pic somehow gave all my old co-workers a boner.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hope its certified

I'm not even a Magic The Gathering fan, bitt even I know the black lotus is an amazing card to have. Nice work op's wife!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

She literally gave you her flower.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

What a blooming good joke.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’d tap

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Whoa, awesome gift. I've never had a girl give me a flower before!

Thank you for connecting the dots of a meme I forgot that I did not understand when I initially saw it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My local mtg shop is the store with the PSA10 Black Lotus, 2mill price tag. Owner is the guy that was selling the superman #1 a while back

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Arguably the most laughably broken card MTG ever printed. Pretty neat that you have it OP.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*plays contract from below* - who’s broken here?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mother of god

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

THE BLACK LOTUS

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice! I've always wanted to own a BL! I've owned a couple "Power 9" but never the elusive black lotus! Been playing/collecting since 1994!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Awesome! I've been collecting TCGs for a little over 20 years myself.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The best I have now is a Unlimited Demonic Tutor I got autographed by Douglas Schuler ?.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The prize of prizes.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had 2 way back in 98' I sold them for way less than they are worth now. Think it was like $40 dollars for the pair.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wife h... Oh wait nvm.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My brother's old camp counselor had 4 of these cards from knowing a guy involved in production. He sold them all and paid for his college.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

False. The most sought after card in MTG is Storm Crow

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you ever need to fall back on any savings or pay off your mortgage, there's your answer

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

True, but hopefully it never comes to that. If I had to sell this card, it would only be because I have no other choice.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Holy shit dude google how much this card is worth! It costs as much as a car!

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

he knows.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

I’m not talking to him jealous bird I’m talking to anyone that doesn’t know like I didn’t

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Might not be the best comparison, there's a fair variance in the cost of a car...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

True. this would cost 50 of my cars

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anywhere from a junker to a pretty damn solid car based on card condition.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well a graded 6 'excellent' is going for about $15,000 so, nice.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Thanks! I doubt I'd get a 6 with the edge damage on my copy, but I'm thrilled to own any copy since so few were printed.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Remember when he opened a black lotus he suspected to be fake's case by throwing it on the floor lmao

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Add a floppy taco and we got a deal.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have the Blacker Lotus at home ;)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unglued and Unhinged were the best expansions.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yehhhh XD

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jesus your wife is well off. Is she single?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

@OP's wife might've been able to get it for as little as a few hundred dollars if they married 15+ years ago.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Longer than that I think. Idk

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No wait that seems about right

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More like 20+. They were in the 4 figure range when I was in high school. You've gotta go back to like 94, maybe 95 for that cheap.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Here's a copy of Scrye Magazine from 2002 that lists the Alpha Black Lotus at around $500: /a/iEzkg So, 15-20ish years 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 then rather than 15 years precisely.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man, I thought they quit printing Scrye in the 90s. I suppose my memory of things from when I was 14 is not as good as I thought. lol

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I understand that these are rare and coveted, but as someone who has never played MTG, what's their gameplay value?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most consider it to be the best card in the game. It works in any deck and is very broken.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But why? How is this so OP in MTG game mechanics?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you played this on turn 1, you would have the mana equivalent of turn 4. Its the best ramp ever printed and it costs nothing to play.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It still seems over rated to me. Theres plenty of amazing cards out there, including one that doubles its damage every turn and stacks

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 words: immediately value. There are so much cards and combos nowadays that win you the game if unanswered, but there are many answers too.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First and only tournament I played in was against a guy that bought out not one, but two of these against me.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

If it's any consolation, they restricted it to one in 1994

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oof. That's brutal. If its any consolation this card is illegal in most tournament formats these days.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You can’t tell me what to do! I’ll triple Pot of Greed Exodia you if I gor’am well want to!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

isn't all the cards? Don't they run the scheme to make people buy new cards, making tournaments accept only them?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some formats like vintage allow you to play cards that have rotated out of the other formats.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who recently started magic , what's "mono artifact" and "interrupt"

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Mono artifact" used to mean an artifact that had to tap, and "interrupt" was just another term for "instant" iirc

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Although I played back when the internet was barely a thing so we kinda made up our own rules and interpretations haha

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Sorry for downvoting but transparancy of information is important and you acknowledged another comment as being more cprrect

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'll live, somehow

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And since the 6th edition rules change, there’s no difference between interrupts and instants anymore.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually, Interrupts superseded Instants in the resolve stack.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

^ listen to this person

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My buddy had a 9.5 of these that wotc bought off him

7 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 3

My friend doesn't know what the 9.5 or "WOTC" parts of this comment mean.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9.5 is the garden grading (it's not all beat up) wotc is the company that originally printed it back in 1993.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wizards of the coast. 9.5 is its grade (essentially mint and perfectly centered) on a 25 year old card which was produced super cheaply and

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

With notoriously bad presses

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's very cool. A 9.5 is worth silly money these days. Kudos to him for having owned such a special card.

7 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 0

Yeah like 20k

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Closer to 80k based on the 9.5 that sold this summer.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

He sold his for 85 wotc was trying to get mint versions of every card and his was the only one being sold

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are only a couple 9.5+ known, right? I heard some guy in UAE was trying to buy them up

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah there are very few copies in that conditon.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I work at WOTC and have 3 framed shadow box style displays of the full alpha set as original uncut sheets on the wall by my desk. Very cool.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

That sounds so cool! Gonna dot this. Let me know if you end up making a post of this please!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holy cow, could you share a picture of it? That sounds amazing.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

why'd they want it? (and how much??)

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

They were trying to get mint version of every card ever printed and from every set his was the only one up for sale and they payed way above

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Market at the time they payed 85k so it wouldn’t go to auction.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

probably the best condition version in the world, so they wanted it back. I would guess.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I know they have rarities and uniques there, but that'd be an interesting expenditure for a company without a specific use in mind

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most likely an in-house archive (or even museum).

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where can you sell old cards? I have a bunch of beta to 4th edition

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Local game stores

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you are selling beta or unlimited cards, I recommend you look up the price of every single card. Common Lightning bolt is worth over $200

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Seriously? Thanks, I have 4 in a red burn deck

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, unlimited is only $20, but beta cards are exploding in value. Other good commons are Dark Ritual, Disenchant, Llanowar Elves, Sinkhole

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll give you treefiddy.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

If you have individual expensive cards, sell individually direct to buyers instead of to a store. You'll get more money.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Either find a local store/collector or sell them as bulk. Just do some research as to what cards are worth something, but most will (tbc)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

get you very little to nothing. Just a fair warning to not get your hopes up.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bruh if look up ever card bolt is like $160 and it’s a common and lotus is an uncommon

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In mint condition, sure. But almost none of them are in that condition.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Since they are older cards to begin with, this isn't necessarily true. Especially with the beta cards.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh god the suspense is killing me. Is it authentic or not?!? I gotta know how this story ends!

7 years ago | Likes 917 Dislikes 14

No offense, but even if it is real, I think it is, it would only get rated max 7, most likely lower. That dramatically reduces the value.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They said it was/passed the tests

7 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

I'd still get it graded just to know. Doesn't mean any less, but it's a cool factoid you can point out.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It's almost surely real because of the wear. Nobody's printing fake Magic cards and then bareback shuffling them to decrease value.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

You'd be surprised. Some fakes have come into circulation lately with fake edge wear for this exact reason.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Edge wear is one thing. Surface wear like this is much harder to fake because it has an element of time to it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesn’t sound so powerful?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a free 3 mana of your choice. You can get a 4 drop out turn 1. Imagine multiples in your hand turn 1. It's pretty gnarly.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do you even MTG Bro!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha jk, so it is an artifact so you can play a land and this on turn 1 and cast something in your hand that cost 4 mana.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's so powerful they had to limit decks to just 1 because with multiple in your opening hand you can go off and get 1st turn kills

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I bought a few booster packs once. Never got into it. Yugioh is my go to, though it’s been years.

LOLz, sry off topic OP. Been HM with an injury watching DS9. Nostalgia **intensifys**

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ran a number of tests before purchasing years ago and am convinced its legit. Would submit to PSA/BGS for an authentic grade if I (1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 630 Dislikes 7

Not worth grading, just from looking at it here.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Always worth grading if high value. Insurance purposes.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Get it valued even if you never intend to sell it. Cpntebt/home insurance won't pay out on your say so that it's worth X amount.

7 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 1

Denting or creases but it is still extremely cool to own a copy of this card

7 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

Its still worth thousands, lol wtf

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

All the white around the edges and the Knicks at the top of the card would probably bring it down a bit and I can't see any 2/3

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Assuming it's real. Without even seeing the back, I'd say it's moderately played at best. Not worth getting graded, likely worth more raw.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Yep. But I would still get it authenticated before selling it if that day ever comes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks like it has been played so I don't think it is worth all that much compared to other copies 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 7

Its definitely worth much less than a mint or near mint copy.

7 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

Probably how you could guess it’s real. No one forges a card and plays with it!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still worth a shit load tho

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Well a mint one should go for 80 grand or more - even if this goes only for half of it, it’s still quite a treasure.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

One has sold for that much. Theyre typically ~30k in mint.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One sold for around $125k. Ridiculous.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

80 fuckin grand WHATTTTT

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Cardboard Crack TM

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Not many copies to compare it to, considering only 1100 were ever printed.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

That's still 1099 other copies to compare it to I think that is still quite a lot of comparisons

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's only based on the assumption that 1099 copies of that card have survived 30 years.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had 2 in 98' Won them in a betting round. Sold them of to pay rent in 2000. $40 and sone games. Ouch!

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sorry for the typos. Sausage fingers.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ever had to sell, but I have no intention of selling since this was a very meaningful gift from my wife. 2/2.

7 years ago | Likes 590 Dislikes 6

Get it verified for insurance purposes

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And you should have the card in the case in a sleeve. Come on man that cards worth thousands.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude that's sweet af. Give that woman a high-five from me. I've given my husband some cool stuff but that's top notch. <3

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You should have a better card case than a plastic slip one. They make much better ones. Just saying from a old baseball card collector.

7 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 1

For sure! I took it out of its protective layers to take the picture but it is not normally this exposed.

7 years ago | Likes 116 Dislikes 1

As a still current collector this case is perfect. Don’t mess with screw down cases. Buy a sleeve for the case you have it in now. They’re

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Card in a perfect fit sleeve in normal sleeve, in oversized sleeve, inside a toploader, inside a case!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Called perfect fit sleeves.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am seeing your exposed card

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Awesome thing to have! It has some obvious wear, so it likely isn't worth the big bucks, anyway. Cherish it well!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

HP grade (this looks far better) are selling for anywhere from $5-10k right now.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't say it was worth nothing. It's an alpha black lotus, ferchrissakes.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even beat to shit lotuses are worth a lot.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree. I was talking in context of lotuses.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Out of curiosity as someone who used to play, what makes this card possibly the most sought after. And what would a possible price point be?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It gives you three mana for 0 cost to play. Giving u a potential 3 mana advantage early on. Cheapest I've ever seen it is around 4 grand

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Isnt it like 30,000 USD now? Probably more

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember it being worth around $300 in the mid-90s. The increase doesn't surprise me, but it is pretty staggering.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ridiculiously op but many cards are. It's not usable in legal, I asumed it was because of the usual stuff, availability date of printing etc

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is useable in the open tournaments. Also very rare due to a few hundred getting destroyed in a basement flood early on.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

By looking at the print and borders, if I was you I'd get it authenticated because it looks duped to me and I run a card shop

7 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 27

Hopefully it’s just slightly bigger than normal cards. As Alpha cards are a teeny bit bigger. They were banned for that reason.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's the corners that are a different shape. Have an alpha gauntlet of might, can't tell the difference in a sleeve.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed, you might want to double check... although not checking is cheaper and might save you a little heart break.

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Weird flex, but ok.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I bet that card gets him unlimited pussy, fake or real... Some guys have all the luck.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

From this picture you can’t assume that, cause it’s far to low res. You would need a scan or something to go for sure.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are card shops around still?!?! Not where I live :(

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its real, it passed all the tests except the bend test which was not administered for obvious reasons.

7 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 1

So if it failed the bend test.... It's a fake? :P

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 8

Bend test wasn't administered.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think there are more than a few people all jealous about your card. Neat thing man! Your wife sounds cool.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You forgot the test where you throw it in water - if it floats, it's fake. If it's real, it will sink.

7 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 2

Pretty sure if it floats then it’s A WITCH!!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, almost important as the burn test. True alpha cards burn a different color than fakes.
