https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/796/~/do-i-need-a-membership-to-purchase-prescription-drugs%3F Okay so I am glad this made most viral but there is some confusion about accessing the pharmacy with out membership. Across the country you can use the pharmacy with out a membership. Source costco.

Plan B works in several ways, not just by preventing ovulation . It may prevent the sperm from fertilizing the egg and if the egg does get fertilized it may prevent the egg from attaching to the womb.

Thank you for this. I've been forming arguments for pro-choice and this was one of the issues. I used to stock Plan B in the shelves and the price was fucking horrendous. I'll be sure to put this in my argument. Thank you. I hope this helps a lot of women.
BarderBetterFasterStronger
Wow, if we just type our motivation in parentheses before the post then it must be true.

How do you get inside the Costco without a card? Every time I go (I’m a member) someone checks my Costco card upon entrance. Not sure how you’d get to the pharmacy without one.
IOftenDeleteCommentsCauseISuckAtTyping
Yeah. Never go through Amazon for anything. N E V E R.
They would flip on you for pretty much anything.
Goatfer
Wasn't Costco starting to check ID's at the door?

Welcome to Costco. I love you.

If this is true, that's great.
bottledham
everyone: but membership!
everyone else: no!
hwatL4bloopy
Is this actually true? I've been having a lot of trouble with my Costco. I'm a dude and not dating a woman right now so I don't see myself having to worry about it right now
QueenOfTheFey
They're shelf stable for 4-5 years and looking at the way the US is going, it may not be legally available if the Trumpet wins
hwatL4bloopy
@op I want to believe but my Costco is shady af and doesn't seem to operate with all national policies in place
JenniferCarrot
I uncommonly deliver Plan B as a dasher and it is always $50
youlovemeyouhateme
Fyi, one can "archive" an Amazon order immediately after placing it to hide it from the order history. It's not deleted but the only way to view it is to search specifically for the item or order number. Not foolproof but better than nothing.
Cptbluebeard7
That's about as hidden as using incognito hides your internet activity from your employer or ISP
mactoid
Also, keep in mind that plan b loses efficacy in patients over 165lbs or a BMI over 30.
AllTheGoodOnesWereGone
It depends on whether you're in a state/jurisdiction where they're required by law to provide public access to their pharmacy. Similarly, some places require the same access to alcohol sales lol.
QueenOfTheFey
All US states require public access to the pharmacy. No costco in the US can demand membership for the optometrist either. So you're good to go, as much as you can be in your dystopia

Am I the only one who read that in an Elcor voice?

Don't you need a membership card to get in store though? In the UK, no card, no entry.
AllTheKitties
No. Not for the pharmacy. https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/796/~/do-i-need-a-membership-to-purchase-prescription-drugs%3F

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO USE THE PHARMACY. Walk up to the employee at the door say you are picking up a prescription, if they resist ask for a manager.

Remember that plan B is less effective in women over 160 lbs. Some recommend a double dose. Ella, which is prescription only, does not have a weight limit
TheFoodWitch
Oh oops, just read it works up to 190 lbs. News to me. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/blog/whats-the-weight-limit-for-plan-b
TheFoodWitch
When I tried to get Ella, the doctor had never heard of it. He wrote the prescription, and the pharmacy didn't have it and couldn't get it for a few days. Moral of this story is: get the Ella before you need the Ella.
bippityboppitybuttsex
I am curious why they haven't sized it by weight-range, so the dosage is enough for people at higher weights?
zoltarpanaflex
I thought Costco won't let you in at all without a membership???
GermanSausagesAreTheWurst
Can confirm. You can go to the pharmacy. My friend got a flu shot there without membership.
somnif
There are certain things they'll let you in for (or are supposed to at least). The pharmacy is one of those.
AllTheKitties
Costco has always allowed non members to use the pharmacy. https://customerservice.costco.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/796/~/do-i-need-a-membership-to-purchase-prescription-drugs%3F

That's pretty kick ass for Costco.

They also have a great deal on a hot dog with a soft drink
addisonemma36324
Friendly reminder that this is only in the US. Australian Costco does not stock Plan B.

I live in Kirkland Washington. I've known many people that worked there and they all had great things to say about the company.
Tajik
I used to live in Kirkland. Now I live in Mount Vernon. Still shop at costco! Lol
spookyu
From what I've seen they have a pretty good track record as a company in regard to both customers and employees. I'm sure it's not all shiny, but knowing they aren't actively trying to fuck over 1) me 2) the people that work for them... that makes me a little more content shopping there.
whitebbwolf
dont employess have shares in the company and are part of soome processes?

They also offer tuition assistance and career coaching (even if your long term plan is not with them).

100% love this and love Costco. But at some Costcos (ours included) they are scanning membership cards at entry to cut down on the number of nonmembers apparently sneaking in. 🤷♀️ So to do this you’d have to explain what you’re there for to the door guys?
cmsport2
As everyone else said, you can just tell them where you're going. They won't make a fuss, because you couldn't sneakily try to buy anything else, anyway. You have to show your card at the register. Gotta say, I recommend getting the membership anyway. And if you have even average credit, their credit card is amazing. High limit, low interest rate, and hella rewards. I've never actually paid the annual fee and I only go there a few times a year. The rewards are that convenient and generous.
OmegaKamidake
I tell them at the door I'm just going to the pharmacy and they let me in
HypnoCT
Non-members can pick up prescriptions ordered for members, so just tell them at the door you are headed for the pharmacy
Snow44444
Membership is not required to use the pharmacy. Just say "I'm here to visit the pharmacy, I'm not a member."
soepie7
Something worth noting; Plan B prevents ovulating. If you already released the egg cell, then Plan B doesn't prevent pregnancy. The stuff is good when it works, but don't use it with the idea that it alone is going to be enough to prevent accidents.
FetteredJuvenescence
Not entirely true. It also makes it unlikely for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterine lining, so it prevents the pregnancy that way as well, even if ovulation has occurred.
FetteredJuvenescence
This is also why right wingers try to call it an abortion pill, because it can prevent a fertilized egg (Which in their minds is already a baby) from attaching and developing.

And we're not going to ask why they're nutting on nuts. It's because they're nuts.
porphyre1e00
And closes off the cervix. You can take it before sex.
waitwuh
What? What strange sex ed is going around these days? Don’t plan to take plan B before sex, it’s not called “Plan A!” If you have that much forethought, buy and use condoms at least. Condoms are the only contraceptive that also protect against STDs. If you’re young, it’s ideal to use another reliable birth control method in addition, so you are protected from STDs and two things must go wrong simultaneously for pregnancy to occur.
indomara
Uhhh. Source?
porphyre1e00
Perhaps I poorly phrased it, but another commenter covered it. The drug thickens cervical muscus, making it physically more difficult for sperm to traverse the cervix.
Bonana
I'm with you there. That does not sound scientifically accurate.
drcookieninja
Levonorgestrel alters cervical mucus thickness and reduce sperm penetration, though most of the studies were done on intrauterine levonorgestrel (IUD), oral plan B does the same.
eggmuffin
That's what it says on the slip in the box, yeah.
Which isn't, strictly speaking, a "closing" of the cervix, more of a "narrowing."
But it's close enough that I can see how the information could have been delivered as such to a child, who then carries an inaccurate belief into adulthood.
We all carry examples of such a process.
Terry Pratchet called it "lies-to-children". A fun and useful term I encourage people to look up whenever it's relevant. 😁
drcookieninja
I realize now you asked for source, I don't have one ready as I'm not an OB, but ask your MD friends or look it up on PubMed, you'll have to do some searching for the intrauterine vs systemic levonorgestrel studies
drcookieninja
Wouldn't count on it as effective contraception despite the physiology being real
Godawful8888
What does it matter if the cervix is narrowed? The seman is already through the cervix when you take plan B
ZOMGNO
Also, even taken perfectly, it only works 95% of the time. 1 in 20 failures. Do use Plan A!!! Failures will happen!!!
anoldiebutagoodie
The thing is, no one can accurately measure the failure rate, as it is not possible to know who would or would not have been pregnant in the first place.
WillLickNudibranchsForBUzz
Given a large enough group of volunteers who agree to have intercourse and use either plan B or a placebo, you can statistically sound project failure rate for plan B.
anoldiebutagoodie
You cannnot predict how many people who had intercourse will conceive. Most won't.
WillLickNudibranchsForBUzz
That's the nice part of statistics. Yes, you can. But keep in mind that what works for 75% of a population is considered the norm, and 1% is still an acceptable error.
InkyBlinkyPinkyAndClyde
Yeah, the bigger problem with those rates is that it probably works much better on some people than others (just due to your own body chemistry, like hormone levels and that kind of thing). So it's impossible to know how accurate that rate is for *you*. Which is why I always use multiple forms of BC. Not to mention even if it works well for you, there's still always a chance of failure. Plan A should be 2 or even more forms of BC in the first place.
WillLickNudibranchsForBUzz
Yeah, it's called plan B for a reason. Luckily I live where plan C is an option, though I have learned that we are strangely restrictive with abortions after week 20...
CuteLukePatoot
And it works best on people under 70kg in weight. So those who are heavier need to consider other options.
BlastFX
What about... second Plan B?
shitheadtookmyname
Ah, Marryacock Randywine
ottercontrol
Plan c?
QuartzPoker
Heavier people can still use it, they just need to be aware it might not be as effective
waitwuh
So 154 pounds for the Americans. I thought doctors could prescribe a higher dose for higher weights, but I personally wouldn’t be beyond buying a second pill and getting out a pill cutter and assuming a conversion of for each additional 17.5 kg / 38.6 lbs take a 1/4 pill more
Ahnmik
There is one available that works better for some heavier people, but only as prescription. It's called ella and works a little better than typical plan B in general, but unfortunately that still only gets you to about 195lbs before efficacy starts to decrease. The other alternative is a copper IUD but I know that's an oof option and can be hard to get on short notice.
BenjyX55
Does it have a shelf life or expiration date?
ActionJohnnie
Yeah but so does bottled water.
sloomoo
And million year old Himalayan Sea Salt!
Birbsicle
The expiration date on bottled water isn't for the water, it's for the bottle. After a while it starts to break down
MoonRiverFrost
Aquafina breaks down faster than most, which is why it tastes like ass. They claim it helps break down faster in landfills, but it really just leads to (more) microplastics in your system.
AzraelEternity
Blame New Jersey. It all started there.
StandingAgain
4 years of stored right is what I was told.
InDubiousBattle
Just adding here: If you need to stock this, PLEASE STORE IT CORRECTLY. Yes, there's some wiggle room in the efficacy of drugs (manufacturers know we're all naughty and store it in a humid bathroom). It is one thing if your Advil is slightly less effective, but if you need that Plan B in two years, you REALLY want to make sure it is fully effective.
DazzlingCockroach
Knowing me, it would still expire before I need it.
demoncatmara
Many medicines can be used past their expiration date, I've done it countless times. It's mainly things like certain antibiotics that can become unsafe.
But I've never taken this one so do look it up. Even if effectiveness were somehow reduced, it's better than nothing
DazzlingCockroach
I was making a joke about being lonely, but that's good to know!
ilhares
Hell, I'm a guy (and I ain't having kids) - I'm tempted to stock up on a few just in case anybody runs into an emergency.
pthoman
I did. It's nice piece of mind.
procrastinatingagain
They could become very hard to get.
arewenotkingsandqueenstogether
Definitely do. If the condom breaks, you got drunk, whatever...
ilhares
I don't drink, so that's not a concern. And the way I engage, pregnancy generally isn't either. ;)
StandingAgain
It is not a bad idea!
CongratsYouAreHereNow
Yeah except if someone who doesn’t know that guy needs some and Costco is sold out

I wasn't planning on stocking a pantry full. I
