The house is about a mile and a half from the nearest road. The only way in is to walk an overgrown trail.

Tons of old bottles in 20th century "middens" near the house. Fancy phrasing for trash dump.

I'm guessing 1940's, tops. Pity it was broken.

"Sinclair MFG CO, Toledo, OH"

A very nice stream a few hundred yards above the house.

Another view. Such a quiet place. The occasional airplane is the only non natural sound here.

Interesting sycamore in the woods. Most branches had been cut or stunted somehow.

The well. Still with water.

The front porch. I'd love to have been on it back in the day.

Time and weather are taking the house back.

The walls were lined with old newspapers, a common practice back then in houses of this kind.

Some parts of the structure are still in good shape. The roofline here looks great.

More newspapers.

The main fireplace in what used to be the living room and bedroom. Animal sign everywhere.

Another paper. Dated August 3rd, 1930. Apoligies for potato quailty.

The cieling in the bedroom is excellent. Looks like black walnut.

The bedroom and closet. Nothing was in there.

Outside, facing the trail.

It seems like the bedroom is the best preserved place.

Felt like Nathan Drake here.

Found an old steel coke can in the barn. Churchkey type. Late 60's?

The barn. It's still functional.

Barn exterior. Stacked rock foundation.

Top of the coke can.

The loft. Excellent shape. Might camp here some Halloween.

Greal workmanship is all about the place. This door was probably hung in place 70 or so years ago, if not more.

Lil bob tailed kitty tax. Hope you enjoyed.

Dude that's so cool, thanks for sharing.

Mmmm, decay porn. Can you check the county records to see who owns it?

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Google the county name and GIS to find property records.

The bedroom ceiling is still beautiful.

We have an ice dam leak this winter. I kinda love the idea of actual wooden beadboard now (we have gross white stuff on a random wall)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure I could resist 'salvaging' (stealing) that walnut beadboard.

That house is the first level in Resident Evil 4.

Matalo!

Blair Witch comes to mind. Not staying there after dark.

7 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

Yes! I came looking for this comment. I got a little Emily Rose vibe from the barn too.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I immediately thought of The Ritual. Was there a headless wickerman in the loft?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Amazing how clean it was inside. Most abandons are filled with trash.

7 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 1

This is likely very far from any sanctuary cities

7 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 63

I'm guessing it's too far from roads. If this was within a ten-minute walk from a place to park, it'd be trashed from teen parties.

Sad but true.

Congratulations. Your DNA is now all over that future crime scene.

I'm pretty sure this is the kind of house that shows up in all those skinwalker stories.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Be careful in places like that. I know someone who fell through a floor and broke his back doing that. Nice pics.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shiplap.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have you considered installing a heated floor

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Sure. But how much is the rent?

7 years ago | Likes 506 Dislikes 3

I'm California? $5k a month.

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

2.5 mil probably

7 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

Ain't bad for what you're getting

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My husband tickles squirrels for a living, and I yell at old people, so that's perfectly in our budget.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You get PAID to yell at old people? Why am I doing it for free?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In California for this rustic ranch house? Plus the barn? you see that stream? $5,000 a month.

7 years ago | Likes 177 Dislikes 3

I just want the income that let's me afford that...

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Plus utilities

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Original ceiling in the bathroom, do you know how much history that has seen? Another $800 per month or $15,000 to have it replaced.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Love that the grain lines up on the ceiling planks - cut from the same wood. Thanks for your photos and adventure!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Blair Witch is gonna be pissed that you went through it's stuff

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do you wanna meet The Blair Witch, cause that´s how you meet with The Blair Witch

7 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

I take it the wifi wasn't all that good?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Check the fireplace for a hidden stash.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We’re gonna blow out this wall... for a nice open concept.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’m amazed someone hasn’t taken it down to salvage the wood

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Or vandalised it or burned it down.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I’d love to metal detect that property!!

7 years ago | Likes 280 Dislikes 3

In the woods? It’s not Norway, but maybe black metal. Black or folk.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I found an old pipe wrench under an old house. Thing still works. Needed some love.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I seriously might buy one for that purpose. There's still a lot of ground I didn't cover in the area.

7 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 1

Bring work gloves next time, you're making me anxious.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Tag me when you do! I wanna see cool thingymajigs!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you do we're gonna need a follow up post

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Do it, but you can probably rent one for a weekend to make sure you get a good one, then you don’t have an expensive toy you don’t use.

Back in the day was a Wednesday just so you know.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But do you know the sound of growing up?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Archaeology student here. PSA to anyone exploring places like this to leave historic artifacts in context; look don’t take. There’s a lot

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, I'm sure someone actually owns this property. Just because it's not maintained doesn't mean it's a free-for-all.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

we can learn from places like this. Even though it’s not spectacularly old, cultural sites like this ARE significant and do get recorded.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The party was respectful in our visit. Observed, but didn't take.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 for old-ass Knoxville News Sentinel! I bet you're in East TN.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That is correct! I will keep the location secret as the property owners requested.

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Have you ever seen the end of the Blair Witch Project?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Steel coke cans with the pull tab were made up until the late 70s in some places. The "Don't Litter" would have been a 70s thing.

7 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 1

Church key actually refers to pre-poptop cans that required a punch type opener ... the opener being the "churchkey"

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And why is it a “church key”? Because it opens the spirits.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don’t recall coke ever being in cans requiring a “church key” to open. The one shown is a pull tab. Jimmy Buffet would call a “pop top”

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Stepped on a couple of pop tops as a kid. Would slice your foot open.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My mistake, I didn't think of the pull tab type.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember when my dad first called it. Churchkey. I was confused and he didn’t explain.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm guessing that's around the time the occupants left the place. There's quite a few modern ish beer cans strewn around the property.

7 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I partied in high school in a few places like this. Prob source of beers

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

You must like budwieser.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

He said beers.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stroh's?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Could you finders keepers that. Like what's the laws on who it belongs to?

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You mean other than the deed?

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think universally that most properties belongs to whomever owns the land it stands on.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Squatters rights, occupy it for 20 years or so without owners objection and it's yours

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that a true thing or are you just messing with me? :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

true in most western countries.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

varies state by state. some only have you living there for 7 years to claim it

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Interesting! But there is still always a landowner, right? In this country i think every bit of land is either privately or goverment owned.
