Watched it just once, back then. One of those movies that can't watch again because liked it so much and can't risk sullying that memory.

This movie was so freaking good, and it was made at a time when the Industry truthism was that gladiator movies were posion, a dead genre.

8 years ago | Likes 910 Dislikes 11

I wonder what was the recent reference that told them that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The same was considered about 'magic' before the harry potter books and 'pirates" before the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It won best picture, and then when it came time to award best director, Steven Soderbergh won for Traffic. Ridley Scott was visibly pissed.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they’re called Swords and Sandle movies, coming from Italian B-Movies. Gladiator essentially was what happened when an auteur made one

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Sword and Sandal*

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because Hollywood can't admit that their movies are actually you know BAD. No if it fails it's because it's a dead genre.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Was that enough of a genre to have that kind of observation made about it?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I saw this movie in Rome. Just steps away from the Colosseum.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have not watched in 12 years. Challenge accepted

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I stabbed myself in the leg during this movie

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you Ralph Wiggum?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can you believe this movie came out 18 years ago?!?

So did @OP

Shhhhhhh. Shh.

Thankfully my dimming memory will wipe this comment from my mind in a few moments. Age has its benefits.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember going to see this with high school friends! I still love this movie!\

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And now I feel old.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yup. Got a hernia on the toilet just yesterday. Everything hurts.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i too enjoy posion!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Healing posions are good.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In most media, no genre is really "dead" it just becomes so oversaturated that unless you make an gem, it's seen as crap.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Like isekai anime

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's the new fad, man. It used to be fantasy, then it was high school super power battle harems, and now it's isekai.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh, name a gladiator movie since?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Spartacus HBO series.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh, there's always TV shows. Hell, westerns are pretty much dead without them. I'm looking for successful movies.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Several westerns have been made in the last decade. There's that one with Pratt, Django

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It really stands the test of time. Even the cgi does alright by today's standards.

8 years ago | Likes 195 Dislikes 0

The CGI was a big deal when this came out. the big rotating camera shot when Maximus walks in to the arena is mostly CGI

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The mark of a great film isn't how it does when it releases, but how it does many years after.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's done like Jurassic Park. CGI is never the focus, so you never focus on the dated CGI.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Unlike Jurassic World, where the CGI looks dated despite being high tech.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There was CGI in this?

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Tigers man.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Practicle effects+a sprinkle of CGI, not the other way around.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oliver Reed died during filming, so some of Proximo's scenes are CGI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCkZr5k6ZjA

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I still couldn't tell thats CGI but that is definitely recycled lines, neat

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

mainly the crowd and the top of the arena. They used the real Colosseum and then digitally repaired the rest of it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they won't/can't spend the money/time to build a clone of the colosseum and to hire every single extra for the big crowd scenes.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

That's how you know it's good CGI.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just watched it the other day and I cannot even notice the cgi. One of the best movies ever made.

8 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

The Colosseum shot is CG, other than that I cant tell.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The actor for Proximo died mid-shoot. They had to CG his face and splice together dialogue from discarded footage if I'm not mistaken.

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

Oliver Reed, great actor with a troubled life

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

He fell asleep in a pub toilet in my town and they dedicated a memorial headrest to him to honour the event

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

He once puked on Steve McQueen. Need I say more?
