1 his and her platinum rings

This is a solid platinum bar. Australian industry standard is most commonly pt950 (10 parts ruthenium)

2 ring component

As you can see, the platinum has been extruded to the correct dimensions to become components of two rings

3 ring bender

This is a manually operated cylindrical press, aptly dubbed the 'ring bender' (terribly creative)

4 ring bender

The stock is fed through as the handle is released and pulled. This gently curls the metal with minimal dents.

5 annealing

Whenever the metal becomes hardened by bending/working it, it's potential to crack increases. Heat is applied to soften, this is called 'annealing'.

6 ring shank

The ladies ring shank is ready for cutting and shaping.

7 rubies

The two rings will feature these marvellous 4mm pidgin blood (best colour grading) Burmese rubies.

8 components

You can see a variety of ring components ready. The gents ring shank was lathed out to save on metal weight.

9 back hole

It's always nice to decorate the hole under the stone, instead of just having a boring circle this ring will have a nice honeycomb shape.

10 honeycomb

There's the back hole all saw pierced out.

11 claws

The focus here is now on getting the big claw blocks on the gents ring.

12 annealing

Getting the platinum a bit softer for working

13 air cool

Typically you whence hot metal, but if you want it extra soft for hammering you will leave it to air cool from 500 degrees C

14 marking and cutting

cutting out the claw lengths for the gents ring.

15 ready for next stage

Claw components are ready for tapering and forging

15 ladies ring

That little bit of wire closest to us need to be made even thinner and longer to become the claw setting

16 rollers

It's put through successively smaller dies in the rolling mill and manually reduced

17 rollers

You can see it's getting longer and thinner

18 tapering

The gents ring claws have been hammered to a taper

19 taper

Here they all are in a row

20 curving

And now the tapered claws have been curved to the exact outer profile of the gents ring

21 claw setting

This is the ladies claws setting being bent into shape before soldering

22 soldered

The ladies ring setting has been half soldered together, and you can also see the top feature rail and shank are nearly ready

23 laser welder

I used a laser welder to tack the gents ring claws on, it really helps with accuracy because platinum isn't very forgiving when it comes to soldering.

24 soldering

Brought it to just under 1600 degrees C in order to melt some solder into the joins and get those claws on nice and strong.

25 soldering

This is the ladies setting being soldered at the base to form a four claw setting.

26 shaping

The setting needed a bit of bending back into shape after soldering was completed

27 sawing

The undercarriage need to be cut out of the ladies ring with a saw

28 components

The two last components for the ladies ring are nearly ready for assembly

28 soldered gents ring

And inside ring clamp holds the gents ring firmly while shaping is done to the outer parts

29 shaping

The shank need a good round profile to be sure it's comfortable for daily wear.

30 filing

Now you can see the claw blocks taking shape into the final setting design

31 top view

It's always good to lay your stone on top and make sure the proportions are looking spot on

32 papering

After filing, a bit of sandpaper prepares the surface for a polished finish

33 polished

Here he gents ring is polished and is ready for setting

34 components

Again, it's good to lay out everything to be sure you have it all lined up and looking good

35 soldering

The top feature plate is soldered onto the shank

36 shaping

The top feature plate is filled to shape, and he undercarriage properly filled out too

37 viewing

Centre setting is soldered in

38 viewing

Getting a feel for how to approach stone setting

39 testing

Measuring and seeing what height the stone will look best but also be practical and protected by the claws.

40 last view

Centre Ruby layer in behind to really decide on the height, this is a pretty important stage because you can totally ruin a ring by poorly setting the stone.

41 gents set

A whole lot of platinum is painstakingly hammer set over the fragile, incredibly valuable Ruby to ensure its safe and protected.

42 polished

In the sunshine after a polish

43 test run

Gotta make sure it feels good to wear ????

44 ladies set

The claws are equally as painstakingly levered over the stone to hold it tight

45 finishing

Claws are cut back and prepared for final polish

46 rounding

Tips of the claws are rounded and a final punch is applied to do that last little tighten

47 polished

At the bench

48 complete

A beautiful new platinum Ruby ring

49 complete

The gents ring worked out very well also

I can cook 3 eggs WITHOUT breaking the yoke. I have talents too you know.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was just thinking this morning, "I WISH I could break an egg into a frying without getting egg white all over any of my fingertips."

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was awesome! Thanks for sharing!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No problem

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wow, you really are a master of your craft. Like some kind of... Lord of the Rings.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I like the male one a lot

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same :)

FYI making hundreds of iron daggers is way more efficient

Stainless might not rust so much

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn beat me to it. Skyrim for the win.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How dare you do that to a golden kitkat

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But they come in 4 packs, surely I can sacrifice one! ????

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This was the weirdest 12 days of Christmas lyrics I've ever seen.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

@OP how much for a ladies ring my dude?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No worries my dude, it's $5,500 AUD, can be made in other metals to reduce price if need be

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Beautiful.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Are rubies from that country hard to get your hands on?

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

These rubies weren't too hard to come by because of their size. If they were a bit bigger I might have been hard pressed to get that kind

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

How much would you charge for one or both of those? Is that what you do full time, @OP?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah this is the sort of thing I make daily. I can work out prices on these rings however you like them. Currently the gents is 7K 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And the ladies is $5.5k AUD, you can contact me on: [email protected] 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Put... Put your finger in it.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Are not all rings custom made? I mean, I never found one in the wild naturally?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A wild ring appears!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In this instance, 'custom' referred to an order specific to the customers ideas and request.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Theoretically in an infinite universe there's at least one planet where these things grow on trees and Swedish people have rights.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is your name Sauron?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love rings not evil ones!

Now I understand why jewellery is so expensive :)

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's exactly what I was thinking!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Best comment yet ????????

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Skyrim makes this look way easier...can you make dragon armor though?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Beat me to it. At least Lv 60 Smithing required for this work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We need a meme for "this was the comment I was looking for" because this was the comment I was looking for.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I took jewelry in high school, I sucked, that only makes me appreciate this more.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Same here!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's so much fun right!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I mostly enjoyed torching pennies. I did pretty good with the fine saws, but I couldn't set a stone to save my life.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This was very interesting! Thanks for taking the time to document this step by step. I learned alot of new things today.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Awesome, that's the idea right!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

What I love here is the suspense. I totally couldn't figure out how all those pieces were going to fit together.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was sure it would look like shit and then - bam! 2 beautiful rings.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As a wife who never got an engagement ring, http://imgur.com/1jOjofw

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Same.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's really quite something when you see it come to life!

9 years ago | Likes 196 Dislikes 0

I was like "what? This is gonna be so ugly..." I was so unbelievably wrong. I adore these.

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

So sorry if I missed it, but are you selling these? Didn't see any links.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I haven't put any links, these were a sold custom set. Though similar rings can be made to suit your interests: [email protected]

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Now do a step by step on how to enchant it.

9 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

First you will need a black soul gem. Second, you murder your neighbor and loot his corpse. Lastly, use the nearest enchant table and done.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh sorry I forgot, you need to cast Soul Trap on your neighbor before you murder him, or her.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well shit, now I've gotta start over

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crafting and enchanting are two completely different crafts. You'll need to get with someone else for that lesson.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

The enchanter and potion guy are sittin' in his kitchen surrounded by knives, pots and spices going nuclear.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sweet now what enchantments are you gonna add

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh it's got that laser from links maters sword, but you need full hearts to use it

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I am very proud to see someone using manual methods. Much of this industry has become machine milled computer work. BIG Congrats to you!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Thanks, I appreciate that more than you know

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'm looking to get an heirloom diamond reset in a ring my size. Do you have any advice about how/where to get this done?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Most manufacturing jewellers (different from the show room style jewellers) will make up a mount using your stones

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ok, so I'll look in my area for a manufacturing type jeweler. I'm sure they exist here, just not as visible as the showroom jewelry stores

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They should be listed as 'manufacturer', although it's worth asking a retail jeweller because they often employ contractors

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you are very, very welcome. - And, highly regarded. Keep it up! There will be a time when people understand the difference.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Thanks for your support :)

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Cost of materials vs cost to the buyer?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

*Including labour, materials, and workshop costs these rings were a total of 12,500

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

How many hours did you put into that project!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This set was all up about 23 hours

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's just over $9,000 USD for anyone else wondering

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You know, I was gonna ask how much to get a set made, but god damn. Great work though.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Platinum and top Ruby are killer prices, but the same designs can be worked out to a budget. Email me enquires: [email protected]

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Do you have other rings to showcase? Will email u, would love one for me (budgeted) eventhough the SO's been dropping hints lol

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That sounds great! Im building the website now, but you can check me in Insta to get a feel: object_maker

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the kind of stuff I like to see on here. No idea this kind of work was this involved. Very cool.

9 years ago | Likes 255 Dislikes 2

Yeah it super labour intensive, and it take a fair amount of training to get work out like this. So I'm happy you appreciate the process!

9 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 0

Very nice work, and I hope the couple is happy. My ring is a plain titanium band, while my wife wears grandma's. She liked the old style.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Nice, went for a strong light reactive metal. That stuff is so versatile! Yeah, heirlooms are a big thing with wedding stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I'd love to see any white gold you have worked with. My rings are both white gold but need recoating since the yellow is showing through

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah the rhodium tends to wear away, you can se a few extras on Insta: object_maker for your reference

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit dude

Glad you like it!

*looks at an oregon sunstone that will need a protective setting. Raises hand* Seriously though, sweet ring, I'm trying to figure out mine

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh your making something? Email me and we can figure out a cool design! [email protected]

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah! I love it. Also your username is very fitting.

9 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

The best puns are the unintended ones.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Awesome! I pretty much just do this with my life, so figured I would start posting haha

9 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 1

Well keep doin it man! Fantastic work

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is amazing. Beautiful. Definitely post more!

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Definitely

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I've never seen the ring making process before, and I really loved this post! Do you make other types of jewelry too?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lately it's been all rings, but I make a general variety when time allows me!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0
