Chinchilla fur is incredibly plush & soft. It is also quite warm. Chinchillas and rabbits like “cooling stones” to rest on for this reason.

dont chinchilla's take dust bath's? or am i thinking of a different breed of rodent?

They sure do. Their fur is too dense for water. It would start to mold if they got wet, hence using dirt instead.

I have wanted a chinchilla since I was a kid. Unfortunately I now have cats, and chinchillas require a lot of upkeep and perfect temp range.

If any1 thinks about getting a chinchilla, please inform yourself first. First above all, chinchillas NEED to be held as a pair [1]
[2] of two females, two males or female and male castrated at least, can also be more. Also they need a HUGE amount of space.
[3] All these small cages seen on the internet are way to small. Also Plastic should be nowhere near them as they nibble/eat EVERYTHING.
AStegosaurus
My chinchilla's first cage was a plastic bottom with wire top/sides. It chewed through the plastic and escaped for a few hours.
You're lucky if he only escaped for a bit. Plastic can stay in their intestines and do a lot of damage.
[4] Chinchillas aren't as cuddlish as the internet might wanna show you for fake internet points. They need time out of the cage for running
[5] jumping, etc DAILY. And for a healthy chinchilla natural food is necessary like herbs, straw, seeds, leaves, etc.
[6] A healthy chinchilla can stick around for about 20 YEARS!
ddriscoll3
I never knew these sweet creatures were this calm...trying to decide between a hedgehog or a chinchilla . Anyone guide me to the cuddliest?
My two chins are super wild and i think most of them are, because it's in their nature to run away from like everything
MishiMoshiSquishyToesies
Get a pair of rats instead. They're sweet and actually like human interaction. For the space and money, you get a better return in affection
AntiquesDragon
Have a chinchilla after years of owning rats. Can confirm.
yourmoth1
Chins are not generally cuddly
noReallyIamPrincessBob
Neither - rats make awesome pets. They are smart and they like to snuggle. They need to have ratty friends though, to be happy.
I heard rats are cool...along with their cage...can they run around the house with supervision?
I would not give them full access because I don’t think it’s possible to ‘rat-proof’ the whole house. However, I used to have ‘the rat room’
so when I got home, I would let them out to play in that room. And if you make it comfy, then you hang out there with them. Safer than the
whole house, especially if you have cats or dogs. They are really great though! I miss my ratties.
Sounds great to me. Thank you.
Mmbear
Honestly this is the calmest I’ve ever seen one. So this might not be the best representation.
meowserscastle
Had 2 as a kid and they were savage. Full zoomies around the cage ant time they were awake. And if we let them out of the cage for freedom/1
Time in a room look the fuck out cause they were basically the tasmanian devil.
Hahahah best description of chinchillas i've seen on the Internet. Our 2 are also extremely wild, why they got a room for themselves
I am a lomg time chinchilla owner if anyone has any questions they want answered.

Aren't they brushing it the wrong way? It looks like the fur goes from the head to the tail not from the belly to the back.
Their fur sticks out straight and brushing them is not a necessesity. They groom themselves and take dust baths to keep a healthy coat
noneofyourbussiness
How do they taste? Are they a viable protein for the end times?
Almost no meat on them. Stick to eating guinea pigs
Wiedzmak
All fur no meat.
A fancy hat it is then!
vibrabones
Do you actually have to brush them? I thought they just needed sand baths because something something fur density.
invadershnikes
Usually only people who show chinchillas brush them. Otherwise, you only need to do it if they have a particularly bad knot/mat in their fur
No to brushing. Yes to dust baths. Absolutely no water on their fur! Their fur is so dense water is not able to evaporate out of it.
kornonnakob
chinchilla vs hamsters
Chcinchillas would win hands down. They can jump increadible distances and heights, spray pee, can bite to the bone and will eat a hamster
The spray pee is my favorite part. Luckily i never saw that in action.
Lets just say they have great aim
I would also like to say if anyone is seriously considering getting a chinchilla not to purchase from a pet store and to look for rescues.
Purchasing any animal from a pet store supports unhealthy breeding habits and potentially unhealthy chins, not to mention poor conditions.
misspigeon859000
Do you have links for any rescues?
https://www.foreverfeistychinchilla.org seems like a good place to start, however i have not fully researched them but their values appear
To be in the right spot.
Chins cant travel in cars for long periods of time so looking locally is crucial.

A lot of people here don't seem to have a sense of humor.
Probably the juxtaposition of the cute chinchilla and genuine questions and then going to a strangely placed "dark" joke.
flamingflamingo

Too dark and morbid dude
How do I not get my whole room covered in dust? They run around the cage and the dust flies everywhere...
PandaPharmacist
Her dust bath is surrounded on all sides with a hole for entering and leaving. We keep the bath in a seperate enclosure from her normal one.
Thats just part of having one. My chin had her own room with her cage in it and her cage was changed once a week and her room was vacuumed
Ya man... The dust is annoying... It's in my office and my desk is covered in dust daily... Got an air filter and it helped a bit but ya ...
At least twice a week. They have a short gi tract anf poop constantly as a result. So if your chin is getting adrquate play time outside of
Its cage the room will be covered in both dust and small hard poops, so constant cleaning and vacuuming is needed.
Are they rodents?
Yes
kiendo
Is the care required I see online as hard as it seems?
They dont need constant attention like a dog but upkeep is expensive and they live very long. Some people may be turned off that they do not
Return affection and can be standoffish, but they do bond with their care takers. As far as maintenance goes they need a dust bath, they can
Be litter trained, the need chew toys, they need various treats, they can be sensitive to new foods, they also need daily excercise.
I loved living with my chin but even after years of owning her i haf to respect that she would not be an animal i could pick up at will.
