The housing association should really make them now their lawns

I live 1.5 miles from 8 Mile. My city is happy to create a safe Halloween experience for kids while Detroit reinvigorates. It's happening!

The house on the right is salvageable. Good roof, that's all you need.

Q: ever wonder why the island of Hispaniola is divided into 2 nations, and the one w more natural resources is mired in squalor? A: Detroit

Where are the property brothers?

Guy in the basement:

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So who wants a $10 house

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having flown into Detroit a few times, it's kind of depressing seeing all this from the air. There are small pockets but a lot of wasteland.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

$200 for the one on the left. don't be surprised to buy a lot with wood on it for that little. It's like the purple squares in monopoly

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I remember staying at the hotel in the GM Tower and looking over the vast darkness of the city. No street lights for blocks and blocks.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

From Detroit, can confirm it is a year round holiday here. This pic could be from my commute in to work everyday.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

sad to see how they deteriorate.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll take my grandma to Detroit every few months and she'll point out houses like that and sat "oh that's where Sally (or whoever) lived"

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Depressing. GG motor city

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That’s a happy little tree on the right

(reaction) "Take her... To Detroit."

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Am I the only one that thinks these dilapidated houses are hauntingly beautiful?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

looks like the one on the right is getting a head start on Christmas, too. Got the tree up already.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

So many once beautiful houses now decaying...

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I just went and saw "IT" today. Fucking enjoyed it. Sorry, house on left reminded me of the crack house...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This makes me sad. Detroit was great once upon a time.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The wealthiest per capita city in the world at one time.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes. Dad worked on the line at Chrysler in the 60s. This would break his heart.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My Dad's dad worked on the line at Ford in the twenties. My Dad was born in Detroit. I was born in Howell MI. A lot of history in Michigan.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, so much. I really really want to see them come back stronger than before. Rooting for them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dark. I like it.

8 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 2

Just like the population of Detroit

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 3

The Detroit Darkies.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Detroit native here- it’s a shame most of the homes are from the 1890’s+, upside though you can buy these for a few hundred dollars

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Detroit isn't all that bad...

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

I hope so. Planning to move down there, heard good and bad things about it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just moved downtown, it's been amazing so far.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was/is home to the "Blow Torch Rapist" so unless you're comparing it to ISIS owned territories, it's pretty bad.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

the WHAT?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't you have a rapist in your neighborhood that rapes people and then tries to melt their face off with a blowtorch to avoid court?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here in Buffalo we don't see that too often.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clearly Buffalo is an unrefined and barbaric land.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I really liked it when I was there last weekend! I was pleasantly surprised by how pleasant, beautiful, chill, friendly it was!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kicking people who are down is a dick move.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 9

Detroit may not be the prettiest city, but I can't help but feel that we're not "down" anymore. Hell, look at the Dough-Joe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Agreed.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I don't think those houses have any people in them.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's the whole point.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Abandonned?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

By humans? Yes, but they're full of crack heads.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Clearly not. Cant you see how well maintained and teeming with life those homes are?

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 3

That's true

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Teeming!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

All those materials going to waste

8 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 4

There are countless shops around Detroit that sell salvaged architectural details from blighted areas... frequent haunts of good friends.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Think of all the beautiful woodwork inside. I live in an old Victorian. Makes me so sad to see this.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Me and some buddies go around and collect plaster lath after demo is done! Can make cool art pieces! Make sure to carry a gun though

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Go squat. You can get a free house if you stay there long enough. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adverse_possession

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh they are stripped, don't worry.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sure there is zero copper in any of those houses.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

"General, another settlement needs our help"

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

What lack of maintenance leads to that kind of dilapidation?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Complete abandonment for several years, I'm given to understand.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Two reasons. 1: the collapse of the auto industry. 2: the civil rights movement. There were no peaceful protests, only violent rioting.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I meant from a homeowner's perspective.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nobody owns those places. A lot of the abandoned homes you see used to be nice but people fled the city with the riots.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The city never really got rebuilt. They're working on it now though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately it's going to take forever for them to get to each and every place/lot. I can almost guarantee they're going by district, >>

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

treating things down and then rebuilding, then moving along somewhere else. Mostly because they probably lack man power for multiple proj's

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They don't look like they'd be useful in that condition.

I guarantee there is a lot of usable lumber in these places.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

maybe not for building houses, but i could use the heck out of that wood for building smaller stuff

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I'm into re-using scrap wood too. Plus I see tiles, bricks, some intact glass...

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

damn that's awesome

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

frames, desks, chairs, tables, lighting (with gas line pipes!), you name it! just need a jointer and a planer and an idea

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Tables, closets, deathstars, you know.. the usual.

I like to roam around derelict neighbourhoods of Detroit, via google street view. It is actually moderately terrifying sometimes.

8 years ago | Likes 768 Dislikes 4

Look up John L Forster, Windsor Ontario. It's across the Detroit river & it's also very derelict area

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

There's a lot of these vids on youtube of Detroit etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2P1bjsVVEDs

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks, now if I decide on pursuing my dream comic, I can easily get good refs for creepy falling-apart buildings!

thank you for this, I was getting bored at work

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First picture when searching Detroit.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I worked the area as a contractor for years; can confirm, it IS terrifying.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks a lot now I'm going to spend most of the morning doing this instead of working.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They should repurpose these areas for farmland or solar arrays or wind farms. This is a ton of wasted land right now.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. Seeing as most areas are near the city centre, solar probably makes the most sense. But either way something could be done.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The sad things is that you can tell a lot of those buildings were gorgeous at one point.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I walk around places like this all the time was born and raised in Gary Indiana. Never gotten shot or stabbed. Most people are just scared.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah I would not recommend doing that in detroit.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gary, Detroit pretty much the same thing. I've done it plenty while I was working up there.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Dare you to do it irl

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

My favorite Detroit street to digitally stroll down Is Robinwood. Sad, amazing. Scary, beautiful. It's American Chernobyl sans an explosion.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Jeez, Fallout: Detroit wouldn't be any different from how it is today.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Just did that thanks to you. Holy crap. Are you guys ok over there in Detroit?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What we're going to do is knock out this wall from the kitchen to the living room to make it am "open concept".

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

. So I remember to do this later (from Scotland, just curious)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't do it in person. Ever. Source: I'm a michagander.

Toledoan here. Detroit isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Go see for yourself, I've been all over the derilict areas, no probs

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Ha. Stopped listening after Toledoan... You fools belong on our side of the damn map, traitors.

Detroit: no fair Google, taking pictures of random bloodthirsty thugs! Do-overs, our city is beautiful and perfectly safe!

B

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Robinwood and the surrounding areas.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, checkout Van Dyke and 7 or 8 Mile. The neighborhoods in that area are pretty bad now. That's where my mom grew up. Scary.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Vanessa? Worked at New Detroit Stamping? We had the sickest freestyle battles at the lunch taco truck.

Check out the old Model T factory on Manchester, just East of Woodward in Highland Park.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Follow Manchester East to Oakland, then take Oakland North past the commercial zone until you get to residences.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fascinating at the corner of Candler and Oakland you see that someone decided to build brand new houses at one point.

tbh It doesn't look that bad?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, I didn't find any terrible parts as such, Just the volume of run down places is what is noteworthy. It's like sim city after a disaster.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Michigan avenue in mexican town. Hookers, drug deals, all fast food places have bullet proof glass, nazi bars, bullet holes, fights

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Crazy thing is though, the houses are beautiful, built way back in the day but the people treat that area like a dump

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Its sad man, 3 million people used to live here and now its close to 700,000. Abandoned houses no upkeep.
