Pixel count a little low, but please don't thank a veteran today. Today is about those that are no longer with us.

Seriously, please stop. Thank them tomorrow, veteran's day, 4th of July, just not today. Remember the Fallen today.
For me that's ETSA Hanson, MM3(SS) Torres, and a number of others, during and after the Navy, but those are the 2 friends that I was closest to. Those are the 2 I still cry for. They are the one's that have left a hole in my heart.
Sidenote -party hard, just take a minute and Hail the Fallen please.
FP edit - fixed a drunken typo

I can see how getting thanked on a day where we're supposed remember people that didn't make it back can rankle a person.

Dude it doesn't mean they can't show you respect too. They are showing kindness to you, doesnt mean they dont remeber those that fell. Relax

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just say “thanks for saying thanks” and carry on.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Is this an American holiday? We have remembrance day in November but that’s about it

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Aye, tis.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You’re absolutely correct. Just try and remember that their intentions were good when they say that.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Agreed.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Thank you for your service.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I may go place some pennys on markers today my friend.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

You do that, it is appreciated, really. Better go to your VFW or Am Legion post. Listen to their stories. Don’t let the memories of them die

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Serious question, is it for those who died and served, regardless of how they died? Or only for this who died in service?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some say for those only in Service, I choose all that have passed.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can also remember to appreciate those who choose to serve so that you can enjoy the life you live. In addition to those that died.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Veteran's day my friend.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It might be an annoyance to you but make the day for others!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don’t thank a vet. We have our day. Just take a minute. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_moment_of_remembrance

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

I never get used to being thanked. I just did a job. It feels so awkward.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Maybe they just know you're dead inside.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Bro

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bruv!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're thanking the soldier that gave their life for your o make it back

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They thank you because they respect you, you came back when others didnt make it through

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

They thank soldiers because society pressures them into it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I get it, I do. I want to redirect their gratitude to the correct place. Which is not me, not this day.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Although I understand where you're coming from and agree, please don't take it as an insult. I didn't realize this either. People mean well

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I don't take it as an insult, and in person I just smile and move on. I try to do a yearly PSA to redirect ppl to those whose day it is.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I also hate it when people thank this guy on memorial day

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Right? He's a dick.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am sorry for your loss. I know that it is mine too. But you felt it and because of that you have my support.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hey OP, thank you for your service

7 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 9

Didn't see that one coming. Nope, not at all. You got me Billy.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 12

Yay! Billy you are the best!

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ive been dragged into work because our company wants to promote memorial day bs. I'd rather be home consoling my parents.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think people forget that others are still mourning and are jaded af. They have bbq's, thoughtlessly thank the wrong ppl, go shopping...

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How many countries are actually at war today? cause I dont know. We remember and cherish our veterans but the war was 70years ago. (Finland)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even Google has it wrong on their main US page today

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a Canadian vet so I might have the same perspective here, but I've never liked being thanked for my service. Sometimes it feels like 1/

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

An empty platitude, and I'd rather just not get the attention. Just don't berate me for "murdering children" and it's all good

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well then you shouldn't have murdered all those children! Sarcasm obviously

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously. In the USA it's ingrained into public society to worship the military.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I always tell my brother that I’m glad I’m not memorializing him today.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

30yrs 4 months and 28 days, made it out with almost all the pieces I started with. I don’t “celebrate” the day, I REMEMBER IT.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

Hoo yah

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Sorry to say but MM4 is not a navy rate, maybe I mistook that but let me know if I'm wrong

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My apologies, MM3. E-4

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh that's fine, I was just confused

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For good reason, and a good catch. TY

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You are most certainly right. MM is Machinist Mate. The number stands for the 'Class' (First, Second, Third). There is no 4th class.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I should know, I was an MM2 myself.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I fixed my error. Apologies shippie.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some people come back, but end up committing suicide in large part due to what they experienced. Where do they fit into this whole idea?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I consider them just as much a Casualty of War, and also honor them this day.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They basically are, just delayed, and that's probably a good way to go about it. It's a shame how common an outcome it happens to be.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They're just saying you're dead to them.

7 years ago | Likes 631 Dislikes 2

That's what she said

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That cracked me up. *claps*

7 years ago | Likes 201 Dislikes 2

Spoilers for The Sixth Sense?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This advice conflicts with the previous advice a veteran gave me, which was to thank them for service

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And now you have learned, veteran's don't agree on all things. They just usually have a reason why they have the opinions they do.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

ya, my step dad was in the army and even still i think the difference between veterans day and memorial day isnt clear to a lot of civilians

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I get ahead of the curve by never thanking military members for their service.

7 years ago | Likes 1826 Dislikes 31

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

Thank you for not making it any more awkward than it is. Having random people come up and thank me messes with my anxiety.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well I'm German so it's probably a bad idea thanking our veterans.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Given the way some people use that as a blow off phrase, it's cool. Be excellent to each other, and party on.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No need for thanks, comped meals, discounts, or anything like that...but...don't spit on us or call us baby killers either. TY Vietnam Vets.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Thank you

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many veterans appreciate that so keep it up!

7 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

that's not the reaction that comment aimed for

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Same. I thank people who have done something for me. Like hold the door open or let me in front when I had 2 things and they had 15.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay I laughed at that. *finger guns*

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like they shouldn't NEED a reason or special day to thank veterans. they do need the day to remember the dead tho

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In Canada it's the biggest Holdiay of November. Lest we forget remembrance of those who died while larks still bravely sing and fly.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for not thanking me.

7 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 3

Exactly this :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're not welcome.

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Man, that show was criminally under appreciated.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I don’t know what show it is. I only know it from the reaction gifs.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I actually hate being thanked. Cause I'm still unsure how to respond after all these years.

7 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

I always say, "it was my honor," and quickly move on.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Respond the same way as someone saying "have a blessed day". Stammer thank you and get the hell out of there.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm no vet, but I assume the only correct way would be via finger guns

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In BMT we were advised to reply with “thank you for your support”. Still hate it though.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I have used that as well but it feels weird. I usually just say thank you and walk away.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a reenactor and I hate when people who don't know thank me. Like I'm just a nerd with a uniform

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

WWII I should add so it's not even like I look current

I've had people get borderline violent because someone else has thanked me.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stolen Valour! *shrieks*

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get even more a head. I walk around with a military hair cut and get all the perks and they never ask for my id.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 20

You are a pathetic bitch.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 8

Call me a bitch. I’ll be a bitch with two legs.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

People not in the military aren't allowed buzz cuts?

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Hey buddy are ya gonna make more SCP stuff?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Of course they can. It’s the acceptance of the military-associated perks based SOLEY on the haircut that makes you profound cunt.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

I thank them with blowjobs and sex.

7 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 10

We also accept alcoholic beverages and hand stuff

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

I would be a soldier so I could be a vet :D

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

Let's just clarify: the fallen or just vets?

7 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Asking the real questions.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well you're a transgender (according to one of your posts) What else could you ask for from a Navy guy?

Cool have at it

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

An asshole is an asshole

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

As a service member I hate seeing this crap. It is massively arrogant to correct people who are showing appreciation.

7 years ago | Likes 397 Dislikes 58

THANK YOU.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I say "I know your day is Veteran's day but thank you for your service anyway"

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He is arrogant for pointing out the actual purpose of this holiday? Don't get butthurt because you are ignorant.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 6

You make a good point, but we vets have an obligation to educate & direct appreciation toward the real heroes who didn't come home.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

People will never know if you don't tell them.

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 5

They don't need to know. They can't know how we feel, and we're not entitled to any special thanks on the other days. Let it slide.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

As a Veteran and a Gold Star family member I prefer OP's message. It's not a celebration it's a Memorial. Thank the Vets on Veterans Day.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Well said, I appreciate all of those that have served. I always say thank you for your service to all military, I'm grateful regardless...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is a way to tactfully do it. I know they mean well. You disgrace the fallen if you act like a dick to people trying to show sympathy

7 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 5

Thank you.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

indeed

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 6

Precisely! It's one thing to educate and another to shame. Spread honor for the fallen, not shame for not understanding the holiday.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fallen died so that their brothers didnt have to. Respecting a living veteran/SM IS respecting the fallen.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes and, I don't think it's too much to ask people to learn a little civics and get their holidays straight.

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Here here

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just talked to my dad today who was in Vietnam. He said he didn't notice people thanking up until a couple of years ago. He says he's 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 fine with it but recognize that if you were in a specialty service, and seen the worst of it, they may not like it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s not arrogant to correct someone. Especially if it can be done tactfully.

7 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 8

Keyword: tactfully.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Thank you! This post pisses me off quite a bit, a lot of my family has served we thank them, for their service and for the hardship of loss

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a lot of my family has served too, including me, I'm a Stewart, we serve. This is how I feel. You get to feel differently, because America.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can also put a post on imgur with your feelings, and not be arrested for it, because America

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was reading the Washington Post comments and I read that we should also be thanking firefighters, teachers, and the police.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

hrm

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There is a way to do it with tact.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you sir. How else are we supposed to show our gratitude

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Agreed

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Eh, I agree and disagree. There's certainly a more tactful way of correcting someone, but I imagine it's always nice to thank a (1/2)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

service member or veteran for their time, no matter the day, it's just important to give the lost their day too.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would rather not be thanked for my service, but I know it’s not about me. Some choose to honor the dead by thanking those alive to hear it

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

notice how I am complaining here, and not yelling at every person with good-meaning ignorance. By doing it this way, I'm not shaming anyone

7 years ago | Likes 178 Dislikes 33

Exactly. My dad was in the reserves and ready to deploy twice and never got called up, then in the coast guard and never saw action. Thanks

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

everyone he sees. He would be heart broken to be told this.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You done good @OP, this old soldier thanks you!

7 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Yeah, still makes you seem like a whiny lil bitch tho. If my buddies were still alive they'd be BBQing and glad folks were thinkin bout em.

7 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 23

People say that for appreciation regardless. How can we tell those that have fallen thanks for their service? So we thank those making it..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I HATE IT WHEN..." isn't complaining?

7 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 58

Read more carefully, pal

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

He said hes complaining here, not that hes not complaining.

7 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 1

fuck

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least you're taking it with grace! :p

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a veteran, I would just rather people not thank me. I didn't do anything amazing, no MoH, nor any stars. I was just doing my job.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Yeah but people dont know that. You sacrificed your family friends etc to serve. So were thankful.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same. I was a desk jockey, never deployed. I didn't put my life on the line. I stared at a computer.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You sacrificed time away from your family for basic and likely where you were stationed. Also enlisting meant you could have been deployed.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I am always grateful for those who sign up to serve to defend my rights for their sacrifices (no matter how small or how they feel)

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If you can tell me what I was defending, I'd love to hear it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I disagree. It is just like people saying happy vets day to active members. We need to know the difference between the days of remembrance.

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 4

At our school, we have a Veterans Day performance and invite all active military, and veterans. Seems weird to leave out active military.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there's an armed forces day, and it can be more difficult to get an active duty to come by.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well everyone currently serving is destined to become a vet of some sort.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

There is still a difference between a vet and active member.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes there is but to get hung up on that seems unnecessary.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's dumb though. Just because it's memorial day it doesn't mean you can't show support to military ppl who are alive. Just because it's

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Veterans day doesn't mean you can't show support to active military. Support should not be limited to one day only per designation.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you can’t say merry Christmas.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Two entirely different things. You should show support for your service members year round, not just on holidays.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0
