Planes flying around storms.

I hope everyone has been safe over the last few days. This gif shows the Hartsfield-Jackson airspace in Atlanta.

Damn it looks like they get really close and shoot gaps. It's like an aggressive driver in traffic. I guess to be fair they can run outofgas

Air travel blows my mind. Sort of a weird thing to be amazed by, but I've always liked flying (whenever I've had the chance)

Neat ^^

NASCAR of the sky.

Ha! One of my brothers is an ATC and that is exactly how he describes his job.

I like the loop that forms to the SW. One plane makes a break for it then the rest dash in.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The one going in first must've been running low on fuel for them to just clear it in well before the rest.

Props to the guys manning the tower and controlling this mess. Just another day at the office for them.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, it looks like the airplanes were trying to make their own storm there for a few seconds

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that's how Atlanta got fertilized.

My first thought was, "They look like sperm." +1

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

That really is beautiful.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love how some of them are like

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why are there no planes leaving the airport?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This only shows the arrivals. The departures are filtered out by the computer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

SO they all smashed into eachother in the middle?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like a cool game

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is this, Starcraft?

9 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

We need additional pylons.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You require more vespine gas

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i like how a bunch of them start playing tag near that storm.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, every one of those dots is 1-100+ stressed out people trying to do thousands of different things. It's like an annoyed ant farm.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

1-100+ stressed out people and likely one air traffic controller playing grand master level Tetris

God, I feel for them. I've seen what an expo worker deals with In a restaurant. This is like 1000x that with much higher consequences.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

ATC on fucking point.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Long Island just got hit with the remainder of those storms Georgia got. Wicked.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That flight #72 though...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You haven't lived until you've waited on Atlanta's hot tarmac for 5 hours waiting fora thunderstorm to pass so you can take off.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

See you on the front page.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That looks stressful as hell for all parties involved.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh shit I can see my home in this map. Northwest Arkansas, Fayetteville.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Go hogs?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dad's an air traffic controller and I like to visit him at work and see what's happening. It's really interesting.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Where at?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Memphis International Airport. It's not exactly as exciting as Atlanta but it's fun.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice, those midnight FedEx pushes can be intense.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Being a controller for Atlanta would straight up be one of the most stressful jobs in aviation haha

It's crazy here in SC. My mailbox blew over. It was set in concrete. Surprised we haven't had more downed trees around here. Stay safe guys

Power is out all the way in Maryland!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Power cut off last night in Anderson. Lightning was nuts.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Northeast TN here, looks like we missed the majority of the bad.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm in Northwest Alabama and I feel like we did too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mid TX here. Same; It looks like all the bad was...literally everywhere other than my part of town.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Do they really fly in circles like that for a while?

9 years ago | Likes 214 Dislikes 4

Yep waiting for permission to land, the ones that did a holding pattern around a red splodge in the top left are boss.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

It's cool as fuck flying around a giant, raging cumulonimbus.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. It's called a holding patern.

9 years ago | Likes 230 Dislikes 0

Fuck holding patterns

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was flying into hongkong during a pretty bad storm they circled around for an hour waiting for a safe opening to land.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, it happened to me once. The constant banking started to make me sick. Almost tossed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea. They wait for a gap then book it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes it is a holdeng pattern

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Crazy how nature do dat

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Yeah that is a holding pattern, sometimes 10 planes can be in one pattern. Each plane stacked on top of each other and they slowly move down

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

It's a holding patter while they wait for an opening

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

AND THEN THEY STRIKE AND DEFEAT

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

AND THEN THEY STRIKE AND DEFEAT

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know how planes magically make up on lost flight time?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Change altitude to find more favorable winds, go faster, or both. The former is preferable, because the latter burns more fuel

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have you never been in a plane before that had to hold for weather?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 15

Flown many times but no I have never been in a holding pattern

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Easy there. Some people haven't been in planes at all.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I have not. I've been on one that had to stop for more gaz because wind was too strong though.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nope. I've flown close to 30 times, including to Hawaii and back 6 times, and never been in a holding pattern due to weather or otherwise.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Planes can't hover in one spot. They have to keep moving to stay in the air.

9 years ago | Likes 151 Dislikes 4

I like you ????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol peasants. Helicopters for life.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like sharks, but with water and not dying.

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

What if someone on board continually flushes whilst the plane is in the holding pattern?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

It's been a long time since planes had open sewage.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Last thing I saw about it was Joe Dirt
