When I was a kid I assumed it was Nuclear Arms Treaty Organisation, cos in all the James Bond films I watched someone was always up to something nefarious with nukesand NATO was usually brought up.
League of Nations was a spectacular failure because even though the US was involved in making it, we ultimately decided not to join it. And it collapsed pretty quickly.
I don’t think most people who haven’t worked in print newsrooms know this, but the person who writes the headline is usually not the person who wrote the story. Doesn’t excuse this error, but does help provide context
In an age where not being wrong about something like that costs you maybe 10 seconds, an awful lot of people are making some very stupid mistakes with depressing regularity.
There is also the possibility that they chose to be wrong to help fuel outrage in a world that mostly reacts to headlines without reading the article. I usually prefer to assume ignorance over malice, but the NYT has made their position as a tool of manipulation very clear, so it remains likely enough.
I knew that AI hallucinations could be pretty bad, but usually it gets common phrases like that correct (or so I thought). Most of the mistakes of that nature that I've heard about (disclaimer: I don't use AI) were things like making up court cases and other references that don't exist.
Fucking idiots pretending to be smart.... so, here's a weird question, here is a screenshot from the actual article, looks like they fixed it afterwards:
Papers also A/B-test with titles to see which ones result in more clicks. I often see different headlines for the same article when checking at a different time or from another device.
At the bottom of the article it does say: "A version of this article appears in print on April 3, 2026, Section A, Page 8 of the New York edition with the headline: A North American Treaty Organization Without America?."
The original headline is meant to be a riff on "how can you have an American thing without America?" So there's no point to the headline once you correctly identify the A in NATO.
NATO is not an 'American thing' it is a European thing with the US being the most powerful member.
A reminder that NATO's underlying principle is consensus, so every member has veto power over most decisions (and when Hungary votes against NATO when/if Russia attacks Poland, I expect Hungary to be expelled).

Nope.
