This is a small tribute to a series of games that I love more than any other: the Souls games. They spark love and hatred, deep discussions about challenge, skill, what is fair and what is just frustrating. And I've slayed dragons from Baldur's Gate to Skyrim, but in my humble opinion the highs - and lows - of the Souls games are unmatched by any other.
Below are a few of my stories that I wanted to share. Feel free to share your own :)
(fyi, this post won't contain spoilers)
Demon's Souls
The game that started it all. I remember seeing a trailer of it, and that I needed it from that moment on, a thing of dreams. Since the game was only available in China and Japan at that time, I got a ch/en copy from ebay.
Unlike its successors, Demon's Souls had character and world "tendency" (a form of good vs evil) that affected the world; If you were bad, it actually got harder.
Dark Souls 1
Dark Souls continued with the mechanics of its predecessor, but initiated a separate story that is mostly unrelated to the world of Demon's Souls - or so I believe at this time ...
What I remember most dearly is setting up skype with a friend, and getting to summon eachother (by trial and error) for some jolly cooperation and serious ganking.
As fast-travel was not an immediate perk, the game posed some serious challenges before you could roam around more freely, but the interconnected world was a joy to traverse and a sight to behold.
Dark Souls 2
While widely regarded the black sheep of the series, I think I've spent most of my time in this particular game. With the addition of the DLCs, Dark Souls 2 offers an immense world with rediculously frustrating bosses that you genuinely feel proud of when beating them. Lud and Zallen, I hate you!
Dark Souls 2 introduced better dual wielding and power stance, improving over the combat of the previous games.
We've held a few Dark Souls parties - I've infected my wife and most of my friends - where we did speed runs, and I've personally completed a soul level 1 run (you don't level, ever), done lots of PVP and ultimately got the platinum trophy as well.
At level 305, this game has my highest level character.
Bloodborne
As the first Souls-like game on the PS4, this was our reason to get a PS4 :) While the mechanics are largely the same, the stats and gear system was simplified, and (most notably) a side-arm allows for ranged parries unlike the dangerous shield parry system.
The no-blocking and health-regain systems make for a much faster game, but the best part about Bloodborne is perhaps its story. I won't spoil any of that though.
As it's easier to get than the other games here, we quite quickly obtained the platinum trophy. As my heart is with the medieval themed games, I'm not planning any speed or challgenge runs on this one.
At about 160K, I've lost the most souls from death in this game.
Dark Souls 3
Darks Souls 3 is the final chapter of the story that part 1 started. I have no idea how it ends, as I'm not done yet. But I've already experienced so many epic moments, rediculous bosses, terrible invaders and hilarious deaths, that I'm sure I will come to love this game as much - or more - as the others.
We're playing blind, but we've already found several secret areas (we're thourough), we also have a lot of questions still though.
And if you made it till here: thanks for reading :)
edit: As mentioned in the comments: King's Field by From Software deserves an honorable mention as the spiritual predecessor to Demon's Souls!

Shoelebubba
Dark Souls 3 was a great finish for souls. References from the OG Demon Souls to Bloodbourne, with the final boss as a throwback to all.
merlew
Played Bloodborne. Love it. Playing ds1-3 now... also check out Nioh. Harder than Bloodborne imo... ima ninja though maybe why.
Breadstickcoma
Bloodborne was without a doubt the reason I got a ps4, absolutely worth it.
omegafurfag
you fight the very soul of the first flame.
ImSynnical
Finally got my pc built maybe ill get one of these when im not poor
Heartsutra0323
Man, I fucking loved all these games. Can't wait to start souls 3. I foresee many deaths in the near future.
CyndaquilAndInk
In terms of PVE, it's very good. Some people have complaints but I enjoyed it.
NothingthatIcanthinkof
Well, i just got Platinium Trophy on Demon's Souls. And i just got a copy of Dark Souls 1 ! Wish me luck :) :)
GustoX
Not a souls player but great post buddy

Are you Lobos Jr. ???
peterned
nope, just a guy.
GodApollo
There was a predecessor to demon souls from software made. It was called kings run or king ring or something like that.
PorneliusHubertII
160k is the most that you have ever lost? I remember losing about 12 million while farming the manyas in demon's souls. Heartbreaking.
screechingfilter
lol at black sheep you mean the shitty one
PlayinButNekked
I've seen this multiple times on fp and usersub

I am a simple man. I see souls, I upvote.

Fellow souls player here. Add me on PSN and when I get my PS+ again we can have some jolly cooperation :-) BarnibusTheBear

I'm still stuck on the first boss in DS3. Granted I've only been playing for about an hour, but I feel like I'm slacking.
NightRush
Some starting equipment sets are definitely on the weak side, he's a lot easier on a Knight than on a Thief. Restarting is an option.
Zechie
Which first boss? Gundyr? He's probably one of my least favorite bosses if so & I've beaten it. Hate the black writhing dragon enemies
JonMing
I had the same problem. The game is sooo hard
CommanderCaribou
have fun man. No Meta
doomraid
Only 160k? I remembered the dreadful feeling of losing 3mil on dark souls to this day.
peterned
damn O_o that's harsh. I've often carried over a mil in 2, but was always careful not to lose them.
rxcthulhu
Love all of them, but particularly dks 1. It just had something to it that made the experience magical.
leumasmc
Terrible, terrible archery. But yes, the magic was a bit OP in that one.
BigJulay
This is how I feel about Gears of War. Never played a fast paced cover shooter. Bought it on a whim on release day and fell in love.
peterned
Demon's Souls was my first, so that will always hold a special place in my heart, but in hindsight ds1 beats ds2 yeah :)
SirVashtaNerada
I agree 100%. I have loved every other Souls game, but nothing quite captures that feel of DS1. Goddamn what a great game.
myplacetosaytheshitineversay
The novelty of creating a deprived and spending the entire game as a lunatic nudist with a club might be part of it.
leumasmc
Terrible, terrible archery. But yes, the magic was a bit OP in that one.
derwulf
For most people, DS1 was the first one, so it was completely new and exciting, and nothing will replace that.
peterned
Yeah, kotaku wrote an article on that, "chasing the dragon". DS3 almost feels comfortingly familiar in that sense.
derwulf
That's also why DS2 was such flop, people expected the feeling of DS1 which you basically can't replace.
BuffingtonRumbleberries
The only problem I have with the DK games is just how bad the controls and camera feel on the PC; they shouldn't be part of the challenge
YouMayFindThisMildlyInteresting
Camera is shit on console too - the 'claw' grip is frequently needed against large bosses. And on PS4 switching items mid-combat is painful.
J4Y1450
Just get a controller. The game wasnt meant to be played with keyboard and mouse.
flamingflamingo
The camera is primarily a problem for mouse/keyboard players. My friend complained about it a lot. I played on PC w/ controller.
perry147
This needs more love. The PC controls are just horrendous at times. Mouse lag and camera angles make it at times almost unplayable.
MisterKratos
Getting a Plat in Bloodbourne was leagues harder than getting a Plat in DS3.
peterned
Dunno about DS3's plat yet, planning on getting it, but getting 2's plat was harder than Bloodborne's IMO. Required NG++
MisterKratos
I got the plat on my NG++ play through for DS3 (I also beat DS2 on NG++++). The chalice dungeon bosses in BB were harder than both.
DrCocksMD
Demons souls was pretty good.
uhhMurdok
My favorite, I remember the intro blew my mind. Co-worker said you gotta try this and let me borrow it, meat Cleaver build all day.
CubsFanForLife
I've played only Demon's Souls. What should I try next?
DrCocksMD
Dark souls than bloodbourne
Spadey
So far I've played it, Dark 1 and Dark 2. Out of all of them I consider Demon's the hardest by far.
DrCocksMD
Yeah thats what I think
uhhMurdok
Oh man who was that fire demon boss I forget, he was so aggressive and brutal.
Spadey
The Flamelurker, second boss of the Stonefang Tunnel just before the Dragon God?
RedTec
What about Kings Field?
InboxMeYourBelgianMalinois
Exactly what I was thinking
functionallyinsane
I feel like they at least deserve a mention on this list as none of these would exist without Kings field.
peterned
Good one :) I wonder if you'd find refs in the DS games back to it when replaying KF. Personally I only know of KF from wiki though.
RedTec
I think simply an honourable mention would be good.
ItsCrazyTim
Dark Souls 2 it was too easy to cap the level
Cassiraa
DS2 is fine. I'd agree that it's the worst souls game, but that's relative. It's still a fantastic game and has a lot of great content.
ItsCrazyTim
I liked the PvP the most out of all the souls games
CyndaquilAndInk
Bosses were easy too. Uninspired for the most part but some were good.
Playloudandprosper
I personally think the bosses were definitely harder than those in DS3. Only 1 or 2 has significant challenges for me.
Hulkhulkthehulkinghulk
Yeah because they could hit you from ACCROSS THE GODDAMN ROOM, FROMSOFTWARE
ChairdolfSitler
Have you fought the nameless King? That guy kicked my ass repeatedly
Playloudandprosper
That and Pontiff are the only ones that were that difficult. The mobs are definitely harder but the bosses seem to only take a few attempts
ThisIsTheWayVod
Ive found that DS3 varies much more drastically per build than the previous games. quality refined dark sword built with pine resin wrecks.
ItsCrazyTim
If you're good at parrying pontiff is easy
ironlemonade
Lords of the Fallen came out on PS4 before Bloodborne did.
VeritasAequitas15
LotF is from a different maker and honestly a step backwards in comparison
SirVashtaNerada
And Bloodborne is only 50x better.
ironlemonade
It's still the same genre and still predates Bloodborne by like a solid year.
SirVashtaNerada
Right, but Bloodborne is in the same style of Dark Souls which LotF ripped off blatantly.
ironlemonade
And?
