Hire-ability depends on the station, but some have 4 year degrees, most have 2 year degrees, and scarily some JUST do the academy (19 weeks

and training is still a fairly new concept some places. just a generation or 2 ago you could apply right out of college and be on the street

In the EU their training is equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and lasts as long. US training is like a participation award from one course.
