Tightening intensifies

I've always wanted to work more closely to a garage spring.

There was a wee cooper who lived in fife
Nickety, nockety, noo, noo, noo
And he had gotten a gentle wife
Hey Willie Wallacky, hey John Dougall
Alane quo rushety, roo, roo, roo

Reminds me of a Led Zeppelin song, of a certain citrus variety.

Cooperage is like my favorite niche craft. I don't know why but I think it's so cool to watch people collect the staves and try to build the puzzle.

That is quite the sizable bunghole

There are so many things that could go wrong there and cause him to loose a finger, or worse.

Get you a man who can make barrels, he is a cooper.

I bet that feels amazing if you're a barrel and autistic

Imagine getting a finger caught in the gap as it’s closing up.

I’d prefer not to thank you

It wouldn't be caught, it would be digital amputation.

Have you seen the hands of the guys that seal the ends of the barrel? 😭 They're missing fingers!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a machine designer, I hope it's at least controlled by the guy using a safety foot pedal. Then he can stop it anytime.

Barrels are fucking expensive. I wanna get a used one to make some mead in but FUCK are they costly

7 months ago | Likes 202 Dislikes 0

I've always wanted to make a barrel!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, they are complex to craft even with modern tooling. It's kinda fascinating, tbh. Complex radial shapes that need to fit perfectly watertigh. Wood buckets too.

Home brewer here: you can buy used barrel staves slice them down hit them with a torch and that works very well for smaller sub 5gal batches. They also sell toasted oak spirals to put in glass bottles that are cost effective. least cost effective is getting a small barrel and they leak I have 3 of the 2.5gal ones and they are half covered in wax to stop leaks.

Brewery that closed down was selling them for $40 near me. Wanted to get one just to use as a table but didn't really have a way to transport it

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on where you live, I've gotten year old wine barrels for $45 from a small winery in California.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to think side tables were very expensive, so why not bust out my woodworking gear, and make my own! And guess what, it turned out way better! And by better, I mean it took me longer, cost me more money, looked like shit, and broke my heart. Have you considered the same approach with barrels?

7 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

No yet. But my previous experience with DYI project and YouTube videos make me think 'how hard can it be?'

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You can get most of the flavor if you want char by just putting it in the mix with glass. Friend of mine just basically tossed toward a barrel into his stout while brewing

soak grass in wood

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can you explain what it means to "put it in the mix with glass"?

7 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I believe they meant: Simply brew in a glass vessel, and put charred wood in the vessel as well. No need to pay for an expensive charred wood vessel if all you care about is extraction.

Its more for the look cause I plan on making mead to take to LARPs that I go to that allow it so I can share with my clanmates

7 months ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Ah, yeah that's tricky. Might be easier just to wrap a glass jug or metal jug in some keg looking wood on the outside

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or just some craft foam and paint.

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can get used barrels for about 50 quid here. There's a salvage yard and hour away from me that has stacks of old whisky barrels. Some might have been wine or port. They're like full on distillery barrels though, probably hold 50 litres or more.

yeah theres a winery by me that i can get them relatively cheap. its really just proximity and luck, once it gets into resell market or travel, prices go nuts
