I got off work, made some leftovers, listened to a comedy special, then decided I wanted to go visit a friend at their business. Hopped in my car, drove over, shot the breeze with them for a couple of hours, then headed out to my car...

Only to find my plates were missing. We checked cameras to find that the plates were missing when I got to their shop, so I did what anyone would do and called the cops.

They told me to wait for a dispatch, and 10 minutes later I was surrounded by several wonderful officers who were very interested in my whereabouts.

I got detained as they looked over everything. At that point I (thankfully) wasn't a suspect, but I was definitely a person of interest. The cops made my buddy stay open as we talked, I filled out a statement, we talked more, I filled out another statement, then talked some more. After the third statement I asked what the vehicle looked like... It definitely matched my car, except mine has a missing hubcap I haven't replaced (for aesthetic reasons, surely) and a massive dent with some paint scraping.

After the detective on site confirmed what I would have assumed to be a super obvious flaw he asked if I had paperwork for the damage to my car (I did online, report from an idiot hit-skipping me in my old town). After a few minutes I got a strong apology and explanation.

Apparently my plates were stolen by a suspect who killed two people and stole their vehicle. Probably to hide their identity. The same vehicle was spotted as part of an attempted robbery, with my plates, within the 3-4 hours that passed between me getting home and reporting the plates stolen. The cops state the plates may have been stolen earlier and I didn't notice so I gave them an itinerary to look for suspects and that's that.

It was one of the most interesting, slightly scary, and generally weird events in my life so far. The cops left, giving me cards and statement IDs, along with a 'oops, my plates got stolen by a killer' pass to drive to the DMV in the morning along with an escort home.

Got there first thing, and the whole event cost 110 bucks (including ordering pizza for my friend, plates, and buying a police-escorted sixer on my way home to calm down. Right now I'm sitting waiting for security people at my job to pull tapes for the last few days to confirm whether my plates disappeared while on property. I'm really hoping they can catch the guy.

tl;dr: The memes cover everything, just more detail.

Thank you for listening to my tale, because it was a crazy one. I've left out several pieces of information intentionally to not interfere and won't divulge my location. Have a great day!

Most Viral Edit: Hey! We made it! Glad my terrible night helped you get through your day. I'd like to thank everyone for reading and my Secret Santa for still not coming through. I doubt I'll get a backup gift but figured I'd state it outright.

Also, Imgur Lawyers: I love the 'always lawyer up' brigade. I spoke to lawyers after everything and they were fine with it. Most of my FB is chock full of lawyers who would have hassled me otherwise. The fact is that I had an airtight alibi and photographic/video proof of my whereabouts during the entire crime spree as well as multiple eyewitnesses immediately available.

I don't add details because they're not 'fun' but Christ, stop with the AM I BEING DETAINED! nonsense. You can't get yourself out of an arrest, but you sure as hell can get yourself into a cage with that.

They stole your plates. But did they have a license to kill?

That AM I BEING DETAINED stuff is hilarious. I love the knee-jerk instinct to refuse to cooperate with police. Fucking internet...

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Twist: they look at the security tapes only to find op unscrewing the number plates o_O

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yikes, scary. And the cops were good dudes doing their job, but an apology and explanation really helps heal the heart on stuff like that.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Good on you for being smart about divulging info. +1 and best of luck friend.

7 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

You really gave them the slip. Sounds like they're off your trail

7 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

that's just what they wanted him to think until they come back with a warrant

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

your apparent calm demeanor ‘under siege’ is amazing! glad you are okay

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had my plates stolen once, but it was not nearly as exciting as this.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You may have convinced the cops, but we know who you are.

7 years ago | Likes 638 Dislikes 3

This post is just part of OPs elaborate fake alibi.

I was suspicious as soon as it said 'I made leftovers' you heat up leftovers you don't make them. Story doesn't add up

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly. I’ve already discovered 3 holes in his story. He’s clever, but not as smart as me. He’s a f*king liar and probably the murderer too

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Not sure if you know but Cranston himself was a suspect in murder case in Daytona Beach.. Cleared because he had an alibi. Not guilty.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry to ask an obvious question but...which comedy special???

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What a wild ride

I like this.

7 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

The original video is even more wholesome, it's a commercial where the old guy pretends to make planes magically appear for is grandson

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Am I not being detained?!?!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That was a nice morning read.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

What is a police-escorted sixer?

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

they followed him to get beer because he did so on the way home

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My plates were stolen off my scooter a few years ago, and used on a motorcycle that ran over a cop. Same situation - lots of questions.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

that makes more sense. hit and runs trying to cover by retroactively reporting the car/plates stolen probably happens all the time

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey man. Don’t get us caught up in your alibi.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Just don't tell them you had a dream about a double homicide using your car

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

+1: Hit Skipping

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

“Slightly scary”?!? Lol I would have been so freaked

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My plates got switched too (luckily no crime happened) but I found out when I got pulled over. Went to fight the ticket and the judge /1

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looked at me like she never heard of someone switching plates before. Ended up winning but it took a lot of convincing. /2

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Had something similar happen. They committed armed robbery with my stolen plate. Fortunately I was at work which gave me a rock solid alibi.

7 years ago | Likes 138 Dislikes 1

A rock solid alibi for one possible crime. Always lawyer up. The state only needs to make one mistake.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You make a great point. This is a long but excellent video that makes your point. https://youtu.be/d-7o9xYp7eE

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I didn't have plates stolen, but I drove a car that matched crime sprees in two areas, different states, that I was in. Only got contacted

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Once because I missed a turn in a new subdivision where the crimes were happening and drove right by the cops in an unmarked car b/c

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My GPS had no fucking clue what was going on. My host answered the door to two plain clothed and two uniformed officers shortly after

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still couldn't afford a less scumbag-looking car for another year lol

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope they catch they guy too... so he can pay you back the $110..... OH, and justice, yea

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was mistaken as a murderer once, but only for a few seconds. Had half a dozen rifles from just as many different counties pointed at me.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thankfully I was at work, but I happened to fit the description of the guy they were looking for. They quickly decided it wasn't me & left.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How come the police were from different countries?!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I honestly have no idea, they just got a call that the guy was spotted at my station & swarmed the place while I was outside smoking a cig.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Counties, not countries. It’s easy to miss that. I do it all the time. Multiple counties wouldn’t be that unusual though, I don’t think.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Totally read that as counties, haha. Guess we both messed up. It'd definitely be wild if I had Canadian & Mexican police after me, too.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I Guess it was just a home-invasion gone wrong, though. Ended up with a 90-year-old getting sho by one of the punkasses.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A few years back, my mom drove a car that matched one used in a robbery at a local gas station and she got pulled over with guns drawn.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Makes me glad I drive a Prius LOL. So uncool I can't imagine criminals would want to use one

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i got stopped on vacation because they closed the only bridge off the island looking for a car just like my rental,

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and my rental car wasn't registered. plates were fake. i assume the rental company is in trouble for some kind of tax thing now

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

(wasn't what they were after, there was a string of breakins or something)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cop here: I also recommend checking your plates every once in a while. Criminals not only take plates then use those “clean” plates /?

7 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

This happened to me but they put the stolen car’s plates on my car. Was arrested at gunpoint before I realized they weren’t my plates.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That’s definitely the dangerous this type of crime. Felony vehicle stops are at gunpoint. We find guns in almost every stolen car

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That’s crazy. Are there public stats on that??

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most likely not readily available. I’m speaking from my experience and that of surrounding towns/ statewide intel reports

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To steal more cars, but they’ll sometimes throw other “clean plates” on your car so you don’t notice it, don’t report yours stolen, which /?

7 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Then keeps your previously stolen/clean plates good for them to use on their crime car longer. Once you report your plate stolen /?

7 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

It gets entered into a national system, which is bad for the bad guys. So, make sure you not only have plates, but that they’re yours

7 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Don't have to worry about my plates being stolen if I don't renew my registration ;)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Of course you do, the plates are still tied to your name!

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm very amused by your choice of icon.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I’m glad to like it!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You would think when something like this happens you wouldn't have to pay for the new plates.

7 years ago | Likes 1814 Dislikes 12

If you didn't have to pay for new plates, you wouldn't be a victim.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

In Missouri, you can take police report number to DMV and get reduced price on new plates

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You could always sue the murderer tor damages in small claims court... good luck with that.

Had my car stolen, and when found had to pay more than it was worth to get it from the tow company

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They're the real criminals, amiright?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He could turn it over to his insurance company, but beater car plates aren't as much as new car plates.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

insurance company slap the extra cost on next renewal

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would guess it would be less than the deductible.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or they are the exact same cost if you don't live in a dumb state that charges registration fees based on car value.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Makes me wish we had "tax and spend" politicians running the state instead of the "tax cutting" ones we've had for decades.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The state doesn’t pay for anything. Had 8-10 vehicles pop tires (instantly) from a busted out watermain on Easter. They paid nothing. I...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

really thought we broke an axle with how deep it was. Took the cops like over an hour after we called it in and there were 3 other...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

vehicles after ours that had insta popped tires.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You could always ask the person that stole them to pay for new ones

7 years ago | Likes 184 Dislikes 0

He should ask very, very nicely.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If he hasn't been gunned downed first.

7 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

You can still sue the estate for damages incurred by the deceased.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I am a lawyer. I've had tabs stolen off of my car twice. I had to pay for them twice. Now I slice up my tabs with a knife after application.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree it's BS, but one almost always has to pay when "something happens".

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, I imagine you can claim it on your insurance. *winks*

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My plates were stolen in CO and they gave me a paper to go to the DMV to have them replaced. I think there was a $15 fee, but that's it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Sorry OP!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recently almost got backed by a car chased by cops, I probably wouldn't even get reimbursed for it if that had happen.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ask for an incident number, and call the prosecutor. Insist that the value be added to restitution as a condition of any plea deal.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But nothing happened really. I just could get on the safety lane at the last moment. Highway chase with speeds over 200km/h. I 1/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was wondering why the car wouldn't move when I looked in my mirror but their speed was so high, I only could see what was going on when 2/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The chased car was close behind me and by then, I could only pull my car over to the safely lane. I never stopped, it was only 1 police 3/

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

I had something similar in college, pulled over by 4 cop cars while driving a blue van full of drunks. Asked to exit vehicle at gun point1/?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When they asked what was in back, I said drunks. And advised against flash lights and fast movement. Projectile vomiting ensuded. 2/3

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They let me go with a warning. And explianed that some one in a van simuler to mine shot at them earlier, they let me go later. No ticket.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A warning for ... being the responsible DD?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A warning for my 8 drunk friends the blew chunks all over the officer's for the ruff ride and lights being flashed in the eyes.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad had something similar happen years ago. He sold his GMC to a junk yard who sold it to somebody in a week and the car ended up being..

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...used for a robbery or a hit and run or something. I forget what but he had the documents to prove he didnt own the car so it was easy

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My mom donated my old car to Kars4Kids and a year later they were serving her papers bc the car was involved in drug dealing. Luckily she

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

still had the receipt for the donation. But we like to tease her about her “drug-dealing days”

I don't know, it seems like it would be interesting...and innocent until proven guilty. Plus, I like to tell of how my mom got suspected (1)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

of attempting to assassinate the pope. ...She likes to do craft projects, and was beading the hilt of a letter opener. Security brought (2)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're insane. I wouldn't call being a homicide suspect priceless or even remotely desirable.

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

What price would you put on it then? Because I don't think you can buy that sort of experience.

7 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

10-20 years or more if you're not lucky; some aren't so lucky

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can't buy it. But it's not hard to achieve. Just have to find a couple suitable victims.
