As much as I love the book, I honestly couldn't give a care what you call the monster. It's easier to call Victor by his first name anyway.
sowillo
The monster is also takes the name of the doctor in the book. He points out that hes his son from reading the Docs notes and proclaims it.
He does not
At length the thought of you crossed my mind. I learned from your papers that you were my father, my creator; and to whom could I apply with
more fitness than to him who had given me life? Chapter 16 of the book!
fairybug
It was also Adam's surname. Children inherit their surnames from their parents, & many a time is the doctor compared to a parent. Fight me.
TheAngryMarineBiologist
Outside of the book, this is also explicitly stated during the universal movies.
Never explicitly referred to as Adam within the book, however.
Though the parent/child comparison is made, there is also slave/master and creator/creation.
TenWholeBees
An intelligent man knows Frankenstein was the doctor. A wise man knows Frankenstein was the monster.
IShootBirdsAtTheAirport
Damn.
Is this really the common outlook on the book? What, because he hated the monster that murdered his entire family, he's somehow wrong? ①
seems more than a little unfair. ④
And I suppose the creature can't be blamed for murder because his "daddy" cast him out and never loved him, right? Honestly, neither was ②
entirely to blame. It was a tragedy, and the biggest thing that I took from it was the danger of revenge. Still, calling Victor a monster ③
Ceverettz
I would have gone with "Because he made a 'monster' out of body parts stolen from dead people"
I mean, that's sick and all, but how does it turn him into an evil person?

Since he is Dr. Frankenstein’s “son” and never had a mom or a first name, calling him just by his father’s surname makes the most sense.

rabiddutchman
You also have to ask "who's the real monster?" The scientist whose hubris made him think he could play god and defy nature, or his victim?
KoalasArentReal
He could defy god though. It's not arrogance when you're right
You can be right and still be arrogant. And did he really 'create' life, or construct a crude amalgamation of life that had come and gone?
somecallmeFinn
I thought the monster’s name was Adam, as in the biblical Adam.
eetsumkaus
No, he was the "Adam of [Frankenstein's] labors". He is never referred to as Adam IIRC
ComradeZoidberg
In the novel, the monster is never named.
He's not named. He's just left as a beast, a wretch, or some sort of creature. They don't address him beyond that. Also, he kills everyone.
Sorry for the spoilers. Its a fantastic book, but I could have done without 6 chapters of Frankenstein describing nature during his travels…

I don't think spoiler warnings don't apply to a book that old.

That's a theory on the internet, but it was never really the theme of the book. The dr is portrayed sympathetically. Science, not so much.
Not really imo. If you want that theme in British lit, look at "Lord of The Flies" or maybe "Heart of Darkness" (Warning: HoD is trash tbh)

Yeah. It was "people are the real monsters" before literally every work of fiction was about that.
