Yeah, feel like it it's poorly phrased. More like: some people would rather believe you a villain even if it means living a lie to do so and no amount of objective truth will make them admit otherwise. Sometimes it's best to just move on.

I think a key component to this whole idea is the lack of access everyone has to the “objective truth” when it comes to interpersonal relationships.

That implies malice on the part of the other person, which is most often not the case. You can have the best of intentions and still cause massive hurt by pure happenstance, and the other person still isn't under any obligation to treat you like you were actually a positive figure in their life. Religious parents trying to force their gay kids to be straight are a great example. Done out of what they understand as love and still caused massive trauma to the kids.
