Storytime!

So my (half, diff. mom) brother recently got back from China after teaching there for a year, and needed a place to stay while he figured things out. My mom actually paid for his flight back since Covid had driven up the prices exponentially (econ = 6k) and is letting him live at their house rent free. Dad is currently in Arizona so she is living alone with him as of current. (He did self-isolate for 2 weeks prior to this story)

My brother still has not told me this story but told my aunt. Allegedly what happened is he was sending business advice to his now ex-gf while he was in China. She established a business with a few of her friends, but he felt since he contributed with said advice, he was entitled to a cut of some sort, either through a buy-in or some sort of partnership. So they went to a restaurant with some of her business partners / friends and on the way, he tried to convince the other girls that he wanted in to some degree. They told him no and he got really pissed off.

So what ended up happening is they get to the restaurant, and because my brother is so pissed, while his then GF is in the washroom, decides to hit on the waitress, with the other people at the table...

So friends end up telling his ex, and they break up on the ride back to my Mom’s house.

So IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM of being told to fuck off basically, he steals my car (which is parked for the summer, no insurance and tires are low/flat, he was also told this) and follows her around town, then comes back after an hour, then keeps my keys in his room, intending to drive it again.

My mom checks the security cameras every night and noticed it leaving the garage, and called me crying and apologizing for his actions, stating it was her fault for not hiding the keys etc. Told her it’s not her issue, but his...

Now I still owe about 20k on that car, if he would have crashed it, I would have been royally screwed... There’s a bunch of other things that could have happened if he was caught but yeah.

I have not spoken to him since early August and I honestly don’t intend to until he comes clean as to why he did what he did... He’s a fully grown man and should know better, and should care a little more for other people’s things.

Tl;dr: Brother stole car to chase after his ex after he was being a twat, car had no insurance and could have been a great financial loss for me if he crashed / got caught.

Fp edit: Figured I’d clear the air about some things; the car does have insurance on it, but only Fire and Theft as this is all that is needed for a car that is parked.

My brother is seeking therapy and did “apologize “ via voicemail and text, but in no way did he admit to why he did what he did, claiming it was “an emergency “ and won’t go further than that.

I might make a part 2 of his antics, since he also stole a very big client from my oldest brother’s company by undercutting him and basically said “you snooze you lose”

This sounds like part one of true crime podcast

Always keep your love/personal life separate from business. That's why I don't date coworkers, too much drama.

This is exactly how narcissists deal with life.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yo, sounds like your brother is a fucking moron. Sorry, dude.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You have a loan on the car and no insurance? That’s really foolish.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

It has fire and theft since it’s parked, but not collision or comprehensive

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I don't know any lending firms that would let you get away without comprehensive. especially with 20k left.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sadly, you may want to consider filing a police report and then letting your insurance and car loan holder know. 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Just to cover your bases just in case. 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

let the lien holder know there's no insurance. that's the proper advice.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

.... I mean just the take the keys back, he is still in town no?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know this wasnt the point of the story, but why tf is the us allowing flights from china???

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

If you're taking about covid China is way way way safer than the USA.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Canada, I think there's exceptions for citizens, but don't quote me on that!

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Why not to confront his dumb ass outright? Also, why not actually disable the parked car in some way besides hiding the keys?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be done the instant he nearly cost me 20 grand to stalk someone, not mad that he didn't "care a little more for other people's things."

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Report it stolen

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you have a car with a lien on it an it's not insured, you're a dumbass. End of story.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It has fire and theft since it’s parked, no comprehensive or collision.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I am surprised your lien holder hasn't sent you a cure notice to clear the lien.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait. Why do you have a car that you owe 20k on parked with flat tires at your parents house? Military?

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Never mind, I saw your answer to that further down the comments. My bad!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Saul Goodman, have some points

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definitely here you, but the system will not fix this. It may be a good idea for a group family session with the therapist.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seems like him coming home was a Wong decision..

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would maybe understand if he was 16-21, but at 33 he needs to have some focus. Sorry man.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Cool story bro. Call the police and get him arrested

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What’s wrong with him? Everyone knows you gotta be done with your grand theft auto phase by 32.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's a paddlin'

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Yeah, no need for a therapy

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry but I was distracted by the fact I see no reason to get a (at least) 20k loan on any car, especially one you're not using.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tell him to give the keys to your mom. Scare him by saying that you’ll report the car stolen if it happens again.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why wait, he already stole it. It's not like he's a small child that doesn't know better.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The keys are out of the house, no where near the car. Also yes the cops will be called if I as much see that car in the driveway

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I would have just called the cop tbh

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who lived in China for 6 years, that place will fuck you up even if you’re the most stable person on the planet. I loved it but

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it couldn’t be farther from Western culture, and being immersed in a setting like that does weird stuff to you mentally. Not in the least

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

bit excusing his behavior — just giving you maybe a little context.

My step brother stole and crashed my car after basic...

Step bro help, I'm stuck.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why did you steal my car.... Step-brooother...

And Jody stole his girl.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What colour of Camaro did you have?

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

2010 SS, inferno orange. When 80% of your paycheck is going towards the loan and insurance you know you fucked up ?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking it was an black cherry 370Z. Most of the guys I went to basic with ended up getting those

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sounds like your brother needs a good slapping in public.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh god I can hear the song...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just call the cops on him

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Oh trust me, I was about too... I didn’t find out till after the car was returned.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It’s still theft if he returned the car. Imagine me walking into a Lambo dealer and just bringing it back hours later, but keeping the keys

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I get you, he’s still my brother though. There was a betrayal of trust and I was/am mad, but I don’t want him down that path

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Conversation goes like this: “Get your shit together or I press charges, and you get your shit together in prison. And give me my keys.”

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

We have the keys back already and they are well hidden in a different location. I told my parents if I see the car move I’m calling the cops

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You’re a lot more tolerant than me. Once people start involving me in their batshit insanity the kid gloves come off. But good on ya.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I'd suggest talking to him now. The whole wait til they become reasonable seldom works.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s not just myself that is having issues with him, he really needs to work out some things before we’re on speaking terms again

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cover your ass/make sure he can't take the car. He is a self-centered type of person.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

you'd have a pretty open and shut case against him were you to take it to a lawyer, but thats an unpleasant road. sounds like he needs help

5 years ago | Likes 543 Dislikes 4

Honestly doesnt sound so bad. He loaned a car from his brother, and didnt think what would happen if something went wrong.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

A lawyer won’t help if he’s broke. He could be held responsible for any damage to the car, but you can’t get blood from a stone.

5 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

What a piece of shit. My bro used to be that way. But now we're best friends.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Happy to hear that. I did really look up to the guy but he constantly does things like this... Glad things are good for you though!

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He is seeing a therapist, honestly this is just scratching the surface for how he’s treated everyone up till this point....

5 years ago | Likes 132 Dislikes 0

If you owe on the car you are probably required to have insurance, best to read the small print.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It has fire and theft, if it’s parked that’s all that is required, but it is not drivable

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Doesn't sound like a brother. Sounds like an asshole you have blood relations too. Be safe friend.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

While being angry at him might be natural, it sounds like he needs some support from friends perhaps. But always take care of yourself first

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

He’s treated me like this since I was born, I’ve tried to be the bigger person but at some point it’s better left to the professionals

5 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

At this point, your "brother" deserves to get tossed. 33 years old and he can't be an adult?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For sure. You don't owe him the fairness and leniency you've given. But you are a better person for it. We'd all be better with more like u.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yeah but the trauma one suffers from trying and failing with a loved one is intense. Sometimes I feel it's easier if I just didn't care.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Car parked for the summer, but you owe 20k on it? I'm confused at this situation

5 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 3

Why do people buy cars they can’t afford?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They wouldn't let me finance a car unless I carried comprehensive insurance on it, even if it was parked. Maybe your situation is different.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Came here to say the same thing. We switched auto insurance companies and my bank sent a notice that they were going to charge me 1200/yr /

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

To put their own coverage on my vehicle unless I supplied proof of new insurance (which we did have.)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a summer coupe and then my winter Awd crossover, which is parked due to me driving the coupe for now.

5 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

sounds about white

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 45

@op, disconnect the starter relay or fuel pump fuse, let the car sit on a battery tender.

5 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

...or just the brakes.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It doesn't make sense to borrow money to buy a 2nd car when you can also buy a car that you can use all year.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What are the cars if you dont mind me asking?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A 2018 Kona and a 2013 Scion FRS

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So both will last longer or just to have 2 vehicles?

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

It won’t last longer. Parking trucks/suv for ext periods of time can ruin them.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coupe is my project sports car, can’t drive it in 3ft of snow come winter lol

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 2

you owe 20k on a project car?

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Nope that one is paid off free and clear!
