There are many articles that answer your many questions. I read the reviews/articles from Pewpewtactical. Depends on how much you want to spend. If you don't want to practice or aim: mossburg shotgun. If want consealed weapon: knife and glock, if you plan for end of world Bravo Company Recce riffle.

Shotgun is your best all around approach. It's effective at close to medium range, which is all you'll be effective at anyways without practice. It's got spread so you don't really have to be particularly accurate, just pointed near your target, and it's absolutely devastating even if they're wearing armor because the force is huge so you're going to knock them on their ass.
And with just a little bit of practice you can learn to make your own shells really easy. Plus, it can breach doors.

I personally chose a hand gun. Easy to carry, fits my hand perfectly, etc. I don’t really know anything beyond that. I’ll admit I am a noob.
I used to live in a blue state and no one I knew owned guns. Then I moved to Florida. You need one by default here to protect your home. Luckily I haven’t had to use it and I pray I never will. However if some nut comes at me like this guy, well all bets are off.
