sooo much more consistent than trackpads. do remember those things giving me a wicked callous cause i'd use it all day for school and then play games all night.
Some tech Youtuber, Adrian or Colin or one of them, got hold of a big 'ol chungus industrial laptop that had a little mouse that would pop out from the side on a little arm - I think maybe it was meant to be used on a table, but you could also use it hanging in midair. A bit like one of those control line model airplanes, but a computer mouse. I bet it sucked to use, but it was pretty neat.
When it existed the alternative was the track ball that you had to have super clean fingers at all times to use and even then it was a lot harder to use so ... no.
It emerged when trackpads where already a thing. Tiny, yes. Rather crude. But they where there. Also in certain circumstances, like when you have to work in a truck on a bumpy road, this thing performs surprisingly well. Much better than the mouse and trackpad, I would claim.
Nah, it replaced the trackball on IBM notebooks, this was before the trackpad (though some had both later on since people had gotten used to it). It was far better than the trackball (that you had to keep super clean at all times and even then it sucked) but the trackpad was always better.

I mastered that button…and she approves the years of training.

Almost every laptop I saw that had one of these also had a dark spot in the corresponding position of the display.
PinkEater
We use to call it the mouse nipple.

So much extinct tech out there. I still have an old pong game that has controllers that are sliders.

This is one of the reasons I only use ThinkPads.

After reading the comments I thought I was the only one that liked think pads for the eraser mouse. I love those things
lunarobverse
How could you miss it! Just find the B and move up
WilwoWaggins
Barely any taint.

b for... ?

Before you get to jiggle the button!

It was a brilliant invention before the track pad style.
termitebe0
At least that worked, that pad keeps locking up on me
invisiblemaniac
You could argue it was such a bad idea, it spurred wider adoption of trackpads.

I always like the option of using the clitoris button, good practice for finer motor skills
WilwoWaggins
I'm a clitoris button virgin.
Trollero
giving or receiving?
WilwoWaggins
Giving. I haven't had a lap dance, I mean laptop, that had one yet.
