Hawaii is the “happiest” state, but has a higher suicide rate than Ohio or Louisiana. Just in case anyone thought this was a conclusive study https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/suicide-mortality/suicide.htm

Come on down to Cleveland-town, everyone! Under construction since 1868!!!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maybe if they vote against their best interests just one more time it will fix everything

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Glad I escaped after 40+ years in Ohio.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As someone that has lived in both states, that tracks

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think I blew the curve and made we Ohioans lower on the list ..

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The bar's pretty low, we're all pretty unhappy. It's a new game we call "Freedumb Limbo"

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Accurate

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Life expectancy" could mean how long, but feels more like "what you are going to get out of it."

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

It ain't sleep...

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'd be unhappy too if I lived in Ohio

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's a reason more astronauts have come from Ohio than any other state. They go to extremes to get away...

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Because Ohio is a conservative shithole. I'm so fucking tired of living here

1 year ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

I just posted on the top comment as another blue ohioan. Please feel free to hit me up if you need diabetic supplies, weapons, training, or emergency medical knowledge or supplies! We are the true Patriots they are the enemy from within. I may be a cisgendered white male but... I have lots of family that would be one of the first people headed to the gas chamber... My grandfather fought in world war II not a brag but I was always told how to fight Nazis and what to do. We got this you guys!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, there's a reason for that...

1 year ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

Why wouldn’t they be extremely unhappy?

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Isn't Ohio a red state? Hmm

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Anecdotally I think we all knew that.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So glad I left. I couldn't get out of the Ohio River Valley fast enough.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

You managed to escape?!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gotta do it while you can.
I was broke, 3wks out of high school.
Got laid off from my kitchen job, collected my last pay, packed my blaze orange frame pack & hitchhiked west 'til I was wading in the surf.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They voted for trump to fix that. He'll make all the other states as unhappy as them.

A falling tide lowers all boats.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Wow. I used to live in the happiest, Hawaii, and now I live in one of the least, Oklahoma. Fml

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On the upside, NYC just increased its average IQ by a significant on off bump.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ohioan here. I believe it

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is Ohio the headline here when the most unhappy state is Louisiana?

1 year ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 1

Because the news station this is from is in Columbus Ohio.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Ohio sucks so much it can’t even be first in unhappiness

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

TV station running the story is in Columbus.

1 year ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

I’m guessing the news station doing the story is in Ohio.

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Because it's all Ohio, and always has been.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

"Is every story tangential to Ohio?"

*click* "Always has been"

Rather than improving their own lives, Ohioans would rather make the rest of the country just as shitty as they are.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not all of us dude. But yes, the majority of Ohio does seem very red now. I bought my wife a small carry pistol and taught her how to use it. The day after Trump won I saw someone walking through the grocery store with his sleeves rolled up in his Aryan prison tats exposed...

Gateway to Kentucky.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And Pennsylvania!

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least it's not Louisiana.

1 year ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 2

Worst state in the union. :(

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I grew up in Louisiana. 0/10 would not recommend

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You know, I never really thought about it. But for the 11 years of work I did writing software for school districts from Maui to Miami, I never once recall selling a contract to any school or district in Louisiana.

Hmmmmm....

Ohio's new state motto. "We're not Louisiana"

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Who knew living in a mosquito-ridden swamp surrounded by inbred racists would have a negative impact on your emotional wellbeing?

1 year ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

I mean, there's a reason folks in New Orleans try to drink themselves to death.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Interesting how “red” states are all in the top 10 for unhappiness (except New Mexico) and “blue” states rant in the top 10 for happiness. Hmmm, one wonders why that might be.

1 year ago | Likes 162 Dislikes 7

Interesting how 9 of the 10 lowest states on general livability (crime, economy, health care, etc) are red states. None of the top 10 states by the same metrics are Republican-led. A few would be "purple". That tells a ton about each party's governance.

1 year ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

Something something woke

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You might also wonder why places with fundamentalist beliefs, hard lives and lower affluence are the places where child, woman and animal abuse are the most prevalent. It’s almost as if the ideology fosters the lower standards of living, and traps people into refusing to rise up to a better way of living

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

pretty hard to be happy when you don't have any hobbies, interests, or care about anything, your entire life revolves around hating other people and being fearful

1 year ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 2

Ignorance is bliss, my country ranks high on happiness and it also ranks high on worst education

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a former Ohioan, I can say a lot of them are unhappy because of the shift to becoming a red state. Ohio used to be a swing state but over the last 2 elections has been less and less blue, with a month ago being the first time full-on red all the way down. So yeah, all my friends and family there are pretty fucking unhappy about that.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Important to remember that Ohio has been proven to be horribly gerrymandered to favor Republicans and was ordered to redistrict, and they just said "nah" and faced no consequences

1 year ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Yuuuuup. Not happy.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Given how low California ranks due to all the right wing policies despite being "blue" and you're likely looking at some confirmation bias.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 22

California ranked 13th happiest out of 50 in the survey, dude.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

So it didn't even make the top 20%. It's a C rank in happiness.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

That’s not how these statistics work. By your measure, “above average” in happiness is still failing for 5 states.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It IS failing for five states. And now you're beginning to see why ranking states in sequential order is a flawed system.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Similar in Europe: the rich, kinda progressive countries lead, Eastern Europe and Balkans lag behind.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

In the defense of Eastern Europe, it takes a lot to recover from the oppressive rule of the USSR and it's puppet governments. Hell, East Germany had the benefit of West Germany's expansive industrial capacity after unification and healthy economy and it *still* lags behind in many areas to this day (at least last I read about it)

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm aware of that, the reasons are even more valid than what the unhappy US states have. East Germany is a shame that all the wealth of the West didn't really help them.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Obv it is because those danged demoncrats are using black magic to steal the happiness from all the red state folks. Nothing else makes sense.

Ok Umbridge

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought it was just organized religion taking over local governance. Nothing the theocracy hates more than other people enjoying their lives.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I know this is gonna be an unpopular opinion; but maybe *because* those states are unhappy, they blame it on the leadership and feel like they need to vote republican?

You see correlations like this all the time, I feel like to get an accurate picture of the world you always have to remember to consider the other ways the data could be interpreted.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The states that suck have always had Republican leadership

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya, and that's an interesting point, but the limelight is never on whoever leads a specific state, it's mainly on the presidency.

A red state with a blue president is going to find it easy to blame any problems on the presidency neglecting them, and not on their own leadership. I feel like the same problem does also apply to blue states, anything bad is going to (pretty rightfully imo) be blamed on him, and not flip the state themselves.

(1/2)

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a lot easier to blame problems on an enemy than to blame them on yourself, and to admit you and all your friends made a mistake. People in republican states see republican states doing worse, and they don't go
"Oh it's because of the republican leadership"
They instead will always choose the easier to understand option that fits in with what they want to believe:
"The democratic presidents are neglecting us in favour of blue states" or similar

Just something to be kept in mind with these

On Apollo 13 Jim Lovell became the happiest person alive by being the absolute furthest any human has been from Ohio.

1 year ago | Likes 184 Dislikes 5

And yet he still could not escape in the end.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would like to start a petition to make Elon Musk the farthest person from Ohio, by launching him into the depths of space to catch up with Voyager 1.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Voyager don't deserve it. He should go to close sun orbit so everybody has to look at him. (Nobody would notice him, but in his mind ... it may work). Lot of free energy there and he is still in the Spacenetwork with a Ping of around 10 Minutes.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, Voyager need not fear, he will never catch up...but don't tell him that.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s less DeltaV to fling him to the Oort Cloud

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but into the sun makes a statement.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fair

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How about sending him to the Pretty Girl Venus? Low Orbit is less then Mars and the rest... he will descend on her.
