Alan Moore himself has said that he now finds it naively optimistic: that it would take a nuclear catastrophe of global proportions to make us go into fascism.
Governments are afraid of the people. That’s why they dumb down education, keep the workers on the poverty line and sow panic about non threatening issues to keep the focus of the masses off politics.
I wonder if the truth will ever sink in? Although it was written as an anti-Thatcher work, it certainly has carryover to different countries and regimes. But is it possible to ever support a fascist government with pure intentions? I would think that everyone is smart enough to realize when they're fooling themselves with "ends vs means" arguments. Admitting it is an entirely different ballgame, though.
I was gonna say it's a shame I haven't seen him in anything new in a while, but after having played Elrond, Agent Smith, V, Red Skull and Mitzi, he can do whatever the hell he wants
I will die on this hill: he was a wrong pick for Elrond. (And not just because I kept expecting him to go "Mr. Aragorn" every time he shared the screen with Mortensen.)
initial reports said difficulties wearing the mask for the whole movie but purefoy himself said creative differences on how to portray the character and i guess technically he is still in the movie to some degree since they just had Weaving dub his already shot footage
I would even say better than the novel really. The ending of the novel is so sudden and leads to nowhere while the movie has a payout while not showing entirely what will happen after. It could get worse really but at least it's the people's choices that could cause that situation and not some hierarchy.
It didn't do it for me. Tbc, I totally get that a lot of ppl really like it (I married one of 'em), but the first time I saw it I knew it was him that was holding Ms. Portman hostage, and I kept thinking "I've essentially seen this before, and with that villain dude as the protagonist". I also think that other story, sadly, has the more realistic ending.

Ok I didn't know that it was him but also the thumbnail made me think "hm Sting is looking sloth-y"

It’s astounding how often I think of this movie and how prophetic it was in many ways.

Sadly untrue :/
SwordsToTheSkyWeRideAtDawn
The Wachowski's RUINED the ending, much like Zack Snyder did with Watchmen. Only Snyder has regretted changing the ending.

My sister watches this every year. She thinks its an anti-government pro-Republican movie, after all she is a republican voter.

She is as smart as we expected a Republican voter to be.
PhailRaptor
I mean, it's against a facist government. So it is technically anti-government.

i'm sorry to have to tell you this but your sister is an idiot.

Perhaps the film industry has a vested image in blurring the lines of its messages so they're not obliquely offensive to anyone
Eleshar24
Maybe you should watch it. I think it is pretty clear where it is aiming.

I did watch it once

John Hurt played the bad guy in V for Vendetta and also the good guy in 1984.
