Honey, I'm home!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did this 2 days ago. You seem much better at it than me

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have 2 hives & was able to take 2 frames out of 1 of them on Saturday. I've only got a 2 frame extractor tho. :)

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How long have you had them? I'm interested in getting a couple of hives but understand that you usually can't harvest the first year.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We got ours on the last day of April this year. I have 2 brood boxes and 2 honey supers on each hive.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I pulled 1 frame from each hive out of a honey super in July. Then my pull on Sat.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm trying very hard to be conservative w/what I take so the bees have enough for winter. I wasn't expecting any extra honey the first year.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started out feeding them and then stopped until dearth happened here (NE NC) then started again w/sugar water. Wanted to help them along.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If anyone has questions I keep bees and I would love to answer anything you got

3 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 2

Why don’t you ever see a baby pigeon?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just moved to the country side, and really want to start with bees,(nice for the gardn&mead)there are tons of videos, any recomondation?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know when the voices get louder and then you black out and wake up 3 weeks later on a boat in the pacific, what's up with that?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For me personally it helped when I bought a bee hive

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is the stuff that was scraped off discarded? If so, why?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you see a really big bee do you call it a capital B?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Outside of their honey-making skills, what's your personal favourite type of bee? Mine is the bumblebee 'cos they're all fat and fluffy :)

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The bumblebee is one of my favorites too, but have you seen the Teddy Bear bee??

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg that's so fluffy. Big eyes kinda creep me out a bit tho D:

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What bee up with all this buzz I bee hearin’ about the bees?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Where did you learn what you know about bees and beekeeping? I want to keep bees but don't know where to begin

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I instantly move at the speed of light away from you would it look to you like I was standing still in front of you, or something else?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think that there would be an image of me, but since the light reflecting off of me is traveling the opposite way I’m moving, maybe vanish?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the preferred nomenclature; apiphobia or melissophobia?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Preferred is "not a reason to hate bees"!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

What's a good resource for someone looking to learn about beekeeping?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your local beekeeper is the best. They know all the ins and outs of basic beekeeping, but also apply it to the local circumstances.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My grandfather always got entire honeycombs soaked in honey from some turkish store and just kinda ate them. Was that weird?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Is there a taste difference between pasteurized and unpasteurized honey

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where can I buy your honey

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We're based in Millingen aan de Rijn, Netherlands. Welcome to have a look when you're in the hood!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well now I have to escape the US and come to the Netherlands, I mean, come visit.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is the BEE movie like, super accurate or not? Because I love that movie and I swear I hear voices, so like, it's gotta be bees. Right?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love the movie too but I gotta tell you it's not accurate at all! Alone from the fact that the bad guys pretend they actually make money.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, why does smoke calm bees down?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The bees think there's a fire, go down the hive and start gorging on the honey to survive the possible hardship. This makes them lethargic.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If it was angry wasps rather than bees that made honey would you still do it?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What makes their knees so great?

How much acreage is appropriate for keeping a hive. I would love to have one but I’m in midtown

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's important that they have at least a 2m radius to fly out at least. Besides that, keeping them in town is good for biodiversity in the >

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

< area. You don't need endless fields, they fly up to 3km to get food. Keep a keen eye on their food supply and feed them if necessary.

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Do bees have best friends?

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don't think so, but who knows...!?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, they do...Its called BFF

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If those are full of honey, where are the eggs placed to let new bees to grow up ? In the same places ?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The top (honey)chamber has a roster that prevents the queen from coming in and laying eggs. She lays eggs in the rest of the hive.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is the stuff they're scraping used for candles? Is that beeswax?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, but the wax used for candles is usually the harder wax the cells are made with. This wax is better used for cosmetics and balms.

How can you help bees if you're allergic to their stings?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Many people still do it, you just need a hell of a lot of protection.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what's the buzz lately?

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Do all bees make honey?

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Only honeybees make honey. Solitary bees like bumblebees live on nectar and pollen without necessarily converting it to honey.

3 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

How much honey can you take from a hive? Don’t they still need some for food?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Depends on the size of the hive. We take up to 10 frames per season, because we want to feed them as little as possible in winter.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How many frames total? Like 10 out of how many?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In our hive we have 1x11 frames for honey. We take 10, but spread out over the season, and for each put an empty frame back in return.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did banning the more evil pesticides help bees die less often in the EU?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is a small improvement going on!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if i fill a shop vac with bees, then turn it to reverse, do they come shooting out the nozzle like a machine gun?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You have to ask the vaccuum retailer, also don't do this because we don't want to hurt the bees

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Isit really bee vomit?

3 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Yes!

3 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Is this bee vomit separate to the social stomach distributed through trophallaxis, or just an extension of that process and behaviour?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Honey itself is the product of their behavior, breaking down the nectar into glucose with their enzymes so they can store it better.

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Thanks

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Have you ever sent someone a parcel full of angry bees?

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm afraid my bees are too dear to me!

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Just how sticky is that entire fuckin' room?

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Very sticky

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

How many bees have been called Maja? And is Willy always their best friend?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have never named my bees to be honest

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess it would be too much work.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that cut off layer edible?

3 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Edible, but not particularly tasty. It's wax.

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

The wax is edible, but it is not very tasty and it is very valuable. :)

3 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

Why is it valuable/what is it used for?

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Because bees like to use a wax seal on their paper work

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's perfect for cosmetics like make-up and creams, because it's soft and high quality.

3 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Bro you totally missed the opportunity to say “that’s none of your beeswax” (on a serious note- thanks for teaching us about bees!)

3 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

What's with the stuff that is sliced off? Is that not honey? Or is it some sort of honey scum?

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

In that picture it looks like it's just the wax caps at either end of the comb.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's beeswax, the stuff the honeycomb is made out of. People make candles and lip balm out of it.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It's capping wax! The wax is softer and in shorter supply than the wax that comprises the comb structure, so very valuable.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

what is it used for?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Makeup and some creams, per bee froth dude.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

With all the time and labor involved, why isn’t honey $100 per jar?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Honey on the comb is very expensive (50 eu for 2 kg at least). Supermarket honey is not pure: it's imported from different regions >

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

< in Asia (China mostly) and a lot of water, sugar and additives are added. Honey from the beekeeper is indeed more expensive (5-10 eu/jar).

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Most beekeepers don't make money. It means turning it into an industry and exploiting the bees.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Huh. I’m in Michigan. Pure local honey- no additives or extra sugar- is like $10 for a big jar. Guess I’m just lucky to be near the source.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do you usually not see bee larvae in the combs? I think that is how it worked?

3 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

The top part of the beehive has a roster under it that prevents the queen from coming there, so only honey is stored in the comb.

3 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

Cool.

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

How do you make sure the queen doesn't get through but the other bees do?

3 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Her ass is too big to get through the roster

3 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Hnngh...Colonel... I'm trying to get into this comb, but I'm dummy thicc, and the girth of my thorax keeps getting stuck.

Side bees known as drones. They die after mating.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not really seeing the downside to any of this

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They mate by making their peepee explode and then they die while the peepee is still dangling out the queen's hoohoo

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I know my dude, that's why I keep bees

3 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

What's the next stage here?

3 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

You see them putting the comb in the centrifuge. When it spins the honey is warped out the comb and then it can be sieved and processed!

3 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 0

Is honey better before or after the filtration and pasteurization? As far as having more/better flavor goes

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know actually. In Europe it's very unusual to pasteurize and filter your honey, so the honey here is almost always raw.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can the honeycomb be reused after this?

3 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Absolutely and it is also encouraged. Making comb takes a lot of food and energy, so you're doing them a solid giving it back.

3 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 0

So the famous hexagonal shaped honey buckets, are not destroyed inside the centrifuge and is reusable!? Neat! Thought they had to start over
