Recovering from skin cancer with tissue expanders

Oct 26, 2025 7:23 AM

I've seen this video being shared all over with zero information about the woman or what has happened to her. (Seriously, the internet is lazy and can't be bothered to look shit up and credit people. Easier to just copy and paste.)

With the video being shared far and wide with only the heading "A young woman with cancer recorded her recovery process ❤️", it is easy to assume (as most people did) that the bumps on her head were tumours.

The video shows Alondra Sierra documenting her experience with saline tissue expanders before an operation to remove skin cancer. Thanks to an extremely large mole in her hairline that turned out to be malignant.

You can see in the video that the mole had been removed (it looks like, at any rate), but the cancer had already spread. (This is how I understand it, feel free to correct me.)

The bumps on her head are saline tissue expanders that are injected via tubes placed behind her ears. Each time only a very little bit, about a teaspoon, over the course of 3 months. This causes the skin to stretch, to be able to cover the patch of removed skin left after the operation. (This technique is also used in breast reconstruction operations after a mastectomy.)

Here you can see the process of injecting the saline (no sound, not sure if it's because I don't have a TikTok account or what):

Since this experience, she got diagnosed with skin cancer again - a malignant basal cell carcinoma on her eyelid. But it was detected very early and seems to have been removed without the cancer having spread.

Fascinating, for someone to really think outside the box like that. Amazing.

As others have mentioned, I too had skin cancer on my scalp. Left a hole in my head that needed plastic surgery to repair, but not as drastic as hers. Still have the scar, mostly covered by hair. Mostly! LOL. Still, if anything looks or feels funny get it checked. I did and my cancer was relatively small at first but they kept excavating until they got it all and there's been no more since then, thankfully!

You look beautiful.

So cool

Cancer is a bitch. She recovered beautifully, and you can't even tell she had been through any of that in the end. The memories may forever haunt her, but it is all in the past while she's heading for a brighter future.

That is very well put. Thank you.

You had a case of devil horns is what you had

That's what Michael Jackson had to do after his scalp was burned while shooting a Pepsi commercial. It's also what Epstein claims Trump did to combat early male pattern baldness.

Fuck skin cancer. Been there, done that. Mine started out as an itchy patch on my neck. If something doesn't look or feel right, get it looked at.

you are a supercute brave inspiring person. you know here in germany doctors told me that they stop calling the fight against cancer a fight, because that would depress the ones losing it. but in my opinion winning or losing doesnt matter that much. even giving up doesnt. the fight is. and seeing people like you winning is totally awesome.

At first she smiles, then she gets a little grim but then she starts to SMILE again! So nice to see!

Wow, that's insane that they can do that now, but you can't argue with results. She looks very "recovered" by the end.

I still believe plastic surgery should be covered for getting people looking like they did before traumatic events. I also think moles and skin tags should be covered that's geting far more off topic.

My sister just had a large spot of melanoma removed from her forehead and shes in her 30s. Everyone should wear sunscreen but also, get checked out if something new pops up

Gross and weird, but also neat and educational. (Up/down vote as you will, it's squeamishly interesting)

Let's hope her newfound fame doesn't go to her head

Badda tsss

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This happened quite some time ago. She's been using her "fame" (such as it is) to raise awareness of skin cancer.

5 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm kind of surprised that I've never been aware of a treatment option like this, since I have had skin cancer all over my body, but heavily on my scalp. I've had 17 tumors removed in the past 26 years. 3 of them were melanomas. Good luck with your journey; I appear to be doing well.

Modern medicine could be amazing, but here we are, being treated like peasants. Some of us get lucky, but most suffer, like you did.

I feel lucky. A friend was less lucky. She ignored a melanoma until it began to metastasize. Now she is in hospital several times a year, and has to have brain surgery so often that part of her skull was replaced with titanium that has a door in it so surgeons can get inside easily.

Glad to hear that you feel lucky.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do you even catch them??

5 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

First one spotted by my P.A. on a annual check up. I now have squamous and basal cell cancers removed every three months.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Semiannual dermatological checkups since I turned 50 in 2000. One got discovered by idly scratching an itch on my arm just as I was waking up one day. The next few minutes after I scratched a tumor was filled with the most intense pain I have ever experienced. I couldn't even breathe for about a minute. But mostly, they are just crusty zits by the time my dermatologist finds them.

with 17 tumors I'm going to guess they are Australian and get checked regularly.

Thats crazy i wouldve just died

Lots do.

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So wait are the bulges cancer or rhe treatment?

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The treatment. The bulges are to stretch the skin so it can cover the spot where the cancerous skin is removed in the operation.

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Medicine is cool as fuck

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats gotta feel so werid. Is it boingy? Can you prick it a little bit and turn your head into a whoopie cushion? So many questions

5 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s so much worse than my vitiligo. Mine doesn’t hurt it just makes me look weird. And it’s not life threatening.

5 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Although both require you to use gallons of sun screen! I’m at about 70% total loss so now I just wear full sleeve swim suits with UV protection - but still have to be extra careful with my face

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Does it feel like a regular sunburn when ya'll do get too much sun? I have trouble keeping my hands out of the sun and when they burn, they just itch like crazy instead of stinging. I've always wondered if it was a me thing or a vitiligo thing.

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don’t have a problem with the sun though, it’s not that much coverage, but it’s slowly developing.

5 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just hurts like regular sunburn for me but my skin turns BRIGHT ELECTRIC PINK lol and one time I missed the back of my knees and got horrible blister sun burn that lasted like a week - never forgot again that’s for sure

5 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I get hot pink and blisters, too. I end up scratching them off because my hands itch so bad. It's so weird. Thanks for answering, I don't get to compare notes very often, lol

Car exhaust gives us cancer. Wood smoke used to.

The particles enter the blood stream and then get "gunked up" somewhere in the cell building process, that's why they're all so different and hard to treat, they're basically looking for ash particulates in your blood that have gotten stuck on a viral particle or something

One of the reasons we got ride of our fireplace! Well, one of the reasons we never used it. And then eventually got rid of it to get the space back (small home).

5 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1) Good decision: According to the UBA (German Federal Environment Agency), a new standard-size wood-burning stove emits around 500 mg of dust per hour when operating at full capacity. This is equivalent to driving a car that complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard for around 100 km. The high level of particulate matter pollution occurs even under ideal conditions, when the stove is operated correctly and the wood burns relatively "cleanly" with an ideal air supply.

If you've ever stood next to a fire regularly
You already know this lol. It makes ADHD the next day awful if you deal with that
