Seriously, though, just trying to "get my foot in the door" has been a figurative bloodbath.

I do take some blame, I know I'm missing certain skills in everything I look at, but also I know I can't (and shouldn't) be everything for everyone.

I could go on with my sob story, but I know I'm definitely not the only one in this endless loop from hell.

My nigga you gotta fake it till you make it

Education should be subsidized (based on grades/performance) by companies that you get work experience at as part of your schooling. GL!

Trying to get your foot in the door is a bloodbath? You should get some for some heavy ASTM-F2413-compliant leather workboots.

Apply anyway. Some of the minimum qualifications are written by hr folks who don't know what's really needed.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Entry level job with entry level pay. 3-5 years experience required" I feel you fam.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

SO MUCH OF THIS.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Hi, we want a person with 5 years experience for an entry level Jon: $20k/yr".

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is what you get when everyone goes to college because of garunteed loans

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Apply anyways. You'd be amazed how many companies will at least interview you to see if you're as smart as you claim to be.

Go to tech school, I got a job in the field before I even finished my first year.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

This. We need skilled labor, not business grads. Not even engineers/scientists.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Well, we need a balanced society, although my Alma mater's biggest program was business and it became overbloated with students

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Internships create jobs and count as experience if you're in the right field.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, you are literally the only person in the world who can't find a job. Ever.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I've only heard negative things about college, but everyone keeps going. I'm glad I didn't go

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's because the people who are successful from going to college don't feel the need to complain about it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I started at the bottom of the food chain in IT on an internet helpdesk. Got me the experience I needed. Now I have a damn good job.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 weeks post college, have a job. Apply for everything. Send out 20+ resumes a day if you must. Jobs are out there

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've seen varying advice on that in terms of quantity vs. quality. I do have a general resume, but people say to customize them to each job

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Send as many of your general out everywhere. I blindly sent mine out and got calls the following day. Just research the company after.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make sure your resume mentions you are a college/university graduate. Companies do like the fact you committed for so long.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

LIE YOUR ASS OFF SIMPLE FAKE IT TO YOU MAKE IT

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

aka commit fraud

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

aka everyone does it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I worried about this in college, but the company I hired with right after grad (and still work for) has spots specifically for college hires

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want to know if anyone uses the trump argument and it actually works. Real shit. Became president with no political experience at all 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Motherfuckers want you to have 3 years experience to be a fucking admin?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm an engineer in computer sciences and got several long internships (total 12 months) during my studies. I think it made a difference...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like giving up because of this :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on where you are in the process. Still in school? Start looking for summer internships REALLY early. Like now. Or yesterday.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Graduated and left uni about 7/8 months ago. It's tough :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in a similar boat. Considering freelancing to gain experience here. Keep at it!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats why i didnt go to college. May take some years but you have to start at th bottom and prove yourself.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha ha ha! Wait until you get to the "Your over qualified." Speech!

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Had both :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can't wait :,)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember I got one of those. "You'll get bored by month 3 and leave. Thanks though."

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ye. They are the best ones.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most, not all, of the people that have the experience started under the position they wanted and moved up into it after learning it 1/

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hands on from the person above them. Many companies want you to work up, not start at the top and work sideways.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Working on the "foot in the door" part. Like I said, figurative bloodbath. There end up being 3+ staffing companies on a job before I see it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sure, but when you can't even get that bottom level job without experience you're pretty well screwed

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is actually a serious problem, jokes aside. New graduates without experience should be offered opportunities to get experience and 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Most universities offer internship programs, not a serious problem in my mind.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't that what an internship is for

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Luckily I've acquired the fucking unicorn of internships. It pays.should graduate with 2 years exp.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We have that in high school for practical profession, where you go to school 2 years and into a profession.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... I agree I did my apprenticeship in engineering and on the application it said 1 year+ experience (from school?) how?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Basically tie absolutely anything you can that you have done that can be considered close. Old school clubs, hobbies etc.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What, you mean an unpaid internship doesn't sound like what you want to do?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

While you go further into debt because they don't pay you plus you will still be paying off any loans that you have accrued?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some unpaid internships can probably work great, some are unethical at best/illegal at worst.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Make themselves more appealing to employers

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

"Unpaid internship"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Go into the right field and get paid internships

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We also need to stop just forcing kids into 4 year schools. There are serious shortages in the skilled trades.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I work at a vocational school. In some cases I need students to have a realistic expectation of salary and that they are entry level.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Definitely regretting dropping out of a metals class where I could have learned some welding, could have been a good fallback...

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"I know I'm missing certain skills" .....

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

For example: job requires someone who knows A, B, and C. Prefers also having D, E, F. I have A B E & F and feel I can learn the rest.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just keep applying and make sure your resume reflects your capabilities and willingness learn :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the plan! I also try to take some initiative and at least learn the basics of what I'm missing through online video classes.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

this is good, always make sure to list relevant "continuing education" on your resume as well ;)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What did u study?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Was I fucking downvoted for asking OP'S field of study so I could offer guidance? Tough crowd.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

There you go

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha thnx

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

BFA in Digital Art, minor in Computer Science. Focus was in "web art" which translates to web design/front end web development.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I work as an artist for a popular website. I don't know if we need people but I'll keep an eye out for ya.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! :D

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is why internships and extra curriculars are so important now

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

With how high the cost of living is, unpaid internships and extracurriculars aren't really appealing or doable

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I would never take an unpaid internship, employers just pass that over as a waste of time anyways.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What pisses me off is they get advertised as a good option but they don't do anything except cause you to lose money

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A relic of job markets gone by

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's what internships can do for you.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

All while not making any money and still having to pay off your loans and living expenses, but yeah

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Depends on the industry. Our interns make $25/hour (plus overtime).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's true, but you do gain the "experience" part for a resume.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Some do. I've had a few too many friends get screwed over by a "promising internship" where they ended up just being a janitor

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just out of curiosity, what did you go to school for Op? What's your major?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BFA in Digital Art and minor in Computer Science. Focused on "Web Art," which translates into web design/front end web development.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Art major is its own problem, doesn't change that a CS major in the same field is going to get the same lack of truly entry level jobs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm a software developer, mostly back end granted, but I'd work on trying to get a more programming focused internship/job.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I worked 2 internships, $10/h and $17/hr. I was able to get a job locked down 6 months before I graduated with that experience.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And since I've been working full time there's been options to move to more front end type work. You just may have to settle for a bit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think a big issue with our generation is we aren't all that loyal. An employer puts in the effort training is straight out of college and

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

About the time that they are going to start to make back their investment in us we up and take a better paying job elsewhere. It's just how

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Things work now. We are loyal to ourselves. Not our employer. Nobody expects to work for the same company for 30 years anymore. We have

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

401k's. Not pensions.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That kind of thinking could also do a lot of harm, though. Refusal to train could easily create a shortage of those with experience later.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree 100% it's a cyclical shit situation. Employers don't value inexperienced employees and college grads feel they are worth more

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What field are you looking to get into?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Web design/front end web development, preferably. But I've been searching for anything that's junior level with Web in the name recently.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly I know nothing about that industry so I can't offer any help

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do you do any side projects outside of class? That can help...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have some that aren't so relevant, working on some that are. My client for the current one is my dad though, which employers don't like. :/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Msg me with your portfolio and info if you're considering freelace work. I'm a CD at an agency, I might be able to give you work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will do, thank you!
