I assume they would gladly accept any variation like "hi" or "good morning". It's just being a fucking person in polite society.
Treating adults like children is not polite. And assuming what you think is polite is the only way people should behave is rude.

Being polite is not wasting my time. I'm there to give you coffee and take your money - have your order/money ready and I'll be happy.
LordPigeon
How does anyone work with the general public and not want to exchange as few words with their customers as necessary?
I actively prefer the "rude" and quiet customers to the ones that attempt to talk to me. The ones that are too friendly just come off wrong
you can ask as nicely as you want. Its still not a request though, its a demand and saying no for any reason but lack of stock could cost me
Maybe thats just a maladaptive perspective i picked up from when i worked fast food though.

you shouldn't be talking to vending machines. and forced pleasantries have no meaning
Hi. Human employed as a vending machine here. Please just treat me like a vending machine. Being treated too kindly on the clock worries me
If youre not going out of your way to be an asshole youre being perfectly polite enough.
XenonAtom
I (a human) always hated when I was working register and people would do 'polite' small talk that slowed down the transaction.
dajex16
That’s good, but I tell them what I’d like, then ask, “how’s your day? Going fast and easy I hope”.
I cant speak for everyone. But dear lord thats more uncomfortable for me as a cashier than just telling me what you want
A rhetorical "hi hows it goin" or something similar before ordering isnt unwelcome but at least to me is generally unnecessary
Lol, not sure why I’m getting down voted. If the person says “it’s ok”, then I don’t to continue and end all small talk. 1/2
But if they are show emotion when they reply, “Great!” or “horrible...”, I give very brief words of 2/3
Of encouragement, compliments or make them chuckle, then I leave wishing them a nice day. That all I do. 3/3
