The title would seem obvious enough, but I do want to warn the squeamish: Blood, open wounds, and nasty scarring in this post... mixed in with wonderful pet portraits I took; I thought it'd make a neat combo.

(Humbly ask Mods to not delete this post due to gory elements as there is some valuable pet care recommendations in it that all could benefit from. Thanks.)

This is my SO's dog. His name is Lance. He's a 4 year old Great Dane. Hard to imagine a dog his size being as playful and energetic as he is, but he does basically behave like a pup in a small horse's body.

Let me make it clear from the get go: HE IS A GOOD BOY AND DO NOT BLAME HIM AT ALL. He's also a great model, look at that fucking smile!

See those big , floppy ears of his? Well, that's where all the trouble began. A week before the bite, he had been shaking his head a lot. Clearly, it indicated something in his ears was bothering him. I told my SO to take him to the vet to get him checked out and I assumed she did.

That was my mistake. (More on this later).

A few weeks ago, I head on over to my SO's to pick her up for a date. At the gate, I hand her phone charger to her as she had left it in my car. She heads back inside, leaving the gate halfway open.

Big ol' Lance comes up. I catch a look in his eyes and remember the times he's run out of the gate (again, he's a big dog, wrangling him is not a fun, easy or fast procedure). So I grab the gate and go to close it. Lance, however, gently places his snout between the gate and the frame, effectively not letting me to close it.
I don't force it or squeeze him with the gate hoping he'd move, we both just kinda reach this uneasy truce between man and beast. I do want to close the gate though, as the sight of the neighbors cat might work him up and he'd chase after it.

So, I take my left hand and with an upward-facing palm gently motion for him to move back. Did the whole "shoo" noise and everything. The second I place my hand on his nose, he bites, catching the three fingers seen above in his jaws.

After the initial "DID THIS MOTHER FUCKER JUST BITE ME?" moment wore off, I tried to remain calm, but that's when Lance decided to pull...

I felt his teeth tear my finger open and that's when I did my best "autistic screeching" impression.

(SO's face has been slightly edited cuz she'd kill me if she found out I posted this).

Lance eventually let go and ran back inside. I pulled my hand back and quite a bit of blood was trickling out of my wound. It also hurt like a mother fucker. Turns out you have a lot of nerves in your hands, making them super sensitive.
FUCK. ME. IT. HURT.

Anyway, my SO heard the ruckus, came out in a hurry, and asked what happened. "Sure, babe. I'll tell ya in a sec but can I get a band-aid or something?". She went into crisis mode, kept me calm (I don't react well to a lot of my own blood spilling out), and cleaned my wound up. When we saw my finger split open, she said we had to go the ER.

Once there, I got some pain meds (no morphine though... cheap fucks!), got my wound cleaned, and had my SO take a photo. ER Doc said I couldn't get stitches just yet as we had to make sure the wound wasn't going to get infected given the sheer amount of bacteria in a dog's mouth. So, they cleaned it up and wrapped it up tight, hoping that would be enough.

It wasn't...

4 days after ER and LOOK AT THAT THING!

Fucking stitches...

After about 4 days of cleaning the wound, it was clear it wasn't going to scar very well or close itself anytime soon. Enter Dr. Surgeon!

Had to take two injections of local anesthetic to numb my finger enough to get the job done. Didn't hurt at all and felt pretty good about that.

That feeling did no last very long...

Swelling and stitches.

Once the localized anesthesia wore off, I'd like to say I was butch and tough and say the pain was manageable. It. Was. Not.

Shit hurt like hell but had to bite the bullet cuz it was the fastest way for the wound to close and heal up. I liked how the blue in the stitches brought out the carnage of my wound.

The healing continues...

Notice the delicate penmanship in Lance's biting method and how it rendered an almost uncanny resemblance to the state of California, complete with an accurate depiction of Baja California.

Middle finger healed first and healed well. Was very happy about it too cuz not being able to properly flip people off was cramping my lifestyle and I almost exclusively flip the bird with my left hand so yeah...

This is what my fingers look like as of today. The first two have healed quite well and you kinda can't see the scars.

The scar/scab on my fucked up finger went from looking like California to resembling a fucked up, rotten banana. It itches a lot and it takes a lot of fucking will power not to pick a it. I should be rid of this scar tissue in about two weeks, so maybe I'll post an update later.

I wanted to end on another photo of this handsome fuck because I want to reiterate: HE'S A GOOD BOY AND I DON'T BLAME HIM FOR WHAT HAPPENED.

Remember what I said about his ears and how I suspected something was up with them? Turns out I was right.

The day after the bite, my SO took him to the vet and they found he had a massive ear infection. Poor ol' Lance had that massive discomfort in his ear for God knows how long and was obviously not in a good mood. An other wise gentle, giant got so uncomfortable he bit me when I tried to force him to move. I'm very thankful it was me, as I'd hate to think what a dog like Lance could have done to my SO who is half my size. Lance has since recovered, his ear infection has vanished, we bro'd it out and are back to being best buds.
So why post this, other than satisfying a weird fetish thing some of you might have for scars and gore? (You know who you are.)
Simple! I like you bunch and don't want this to happen to you. If your furry companion starts showing signs of discomfort, do not ignore it. Get them checked, even if there is the slightest doubt they can be in pain. Our pets are family, but they are also animals. When they get stressed and are in pain, they can lash out and bad shit can happen.

Cat Tax of my boy Tom looking all modely and shit.

TL;DR:
OP got bit by SO's Great Dane. Blood. Stitches. Scar Tissue. PSA: Don't ignore your pets discomfort!

The most disturbing part of this was that fucking smiley face

That is a terribly trained dog OP, do something before something worse happens. Did you at least punish him?

As someone with a St Bernard and a great pyrenees, I always worry that they could snap at someone. Big dogs are good dogs.

Great post @op

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sure it's a deep wound, but I personally won't call it NSFW

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stuff like this is why I get anxious when I see people leaving dogs around little children. They're usually great, but they're animals.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1) Nice beard 2) Hawt gf 3) Good boy

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your girlfriends excessive smiling while you're suffering is God damn terrifying...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gotta mastiff/great dane... sweetest most playful pup. But when she bears teeth lemme tell ya, I'd hate to be a robber

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same thing happened to a friend of my and my dog. Ear thing went on and he was unhappy, it had been pushed like twice that day then snapped

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:( your finger looked like a hot dog in the microwave. i hope it heals better for you!!! glad to hear pupper is healed but hope he works on

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

his manners

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is wrong with your girlfriend's face?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dude! You're not spose to draw attention to it

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllll noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ouch. Hope you get better OP

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"He is a good boy" is a weak defense for the next time he bites someone.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

thank you for prefacing the post before just showing a picture of your wound

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You are very welcome.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Old lance there has the taste of human blood......got to take him out (all you idiots out there, this was a joke)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My dog broke my toe once but he's the goodest boy

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not sure what's going on here, but if my wife wanted to have sex with that cat in the last pic, I wouldn't be able to stop them.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh my dog is really nice, he usually never bites - every dog owner with a dog that has bitten someone.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Dane Owner, If a Dane is unhappy you take it very seriously. That is a whole lot of dog to be upset and render huge damage when they attack.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah, perfect character count with out planning or editing! It's the little things in life that make it so great.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Update for the message, my poor dog really slowed down and we thought it was just her age (11) but turned out she had a painful glaucoma

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*upvote, damn you autocorrect

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Any hospital I've ever been never let's me record anything.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

My SO was faking sending texts while recording. She's the best.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Ahhh, so that's the trick...having an SO.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Justifying a dog bite is a slippery slope. Idgaf if i get downvoted, you were not an aggressor and the dog bit you.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ikr, my dog had severe discomfort due to stomach issues and never attempted this. they need to address that behavior now

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

it can happen again that dog is a danger and they are downplaying it

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

*my* dog is a good dog and would never do that, except for that one time when there were circumstances!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

my roommate's dog was being really disobedient and shitty until we found out he'd had a squeaker in his intestines for two months.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Strange, I would of thought being shitty would of solved the squeaker in intestines problem...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was your roomates dog in the movie Snatch by any chance?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Do you like dags?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

A squeaker is what i call japanese girls in bed, so this sentence makes me slightly uncomfortable ^^

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's also what we call little kids using voice chat on online games

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh good, you already went to the ER. They pumped you full of antibiotics, right?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

So many shots. Was so embarrased when i had to bare my ass cuz I was wearing my sponge bob briefs.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

You wear those with pride, @OP!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never be ashamed to rep spongebob. Badass.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're nurses, they've probably seen far worse things under a man's pants than SpongeBob.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Example?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I once went to ER while wearing my (ex)GFs lace panties. The nurse said I had a cute butt though. Which helped with the feeling awkward.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Beautiful.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i am not so sure of lance's membership of the honourable society of good dogs.

9 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 5

Sick/injured animals retreat to instinct not training. A sick good boy is essentially you in a bad mood. You lash out but don't mean to.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hes a good dog Brant

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They're good dogs, Bront

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

He's a good boy.

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 12

Clearly not

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

He's a good boy, Brent.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Not the goodest though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But not the best

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

All dogs are the best. And even best boys make mistakes sometimes.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I had a massive ear infection once. I wouldn't have wanted anyone to fuck with me either. (The difference is that I could earn them.)

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

*warn

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yea my gf had one and I couldn't even kiss her cause the pain shooting into her face was so bad.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I could only imagine what it would be like for a dog

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably startling and painful! That's why I'm on the "good dog" side of this unless I see evidence that aggression is in his nature.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Gentle as can be. Went in for belly rubs just a day ago and was rewarded with slobbery licks and warm nuzzles.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was promised NSFW images. I work in a hospital.

9 years ago | Likes 184 Dislikes 0

I'm with mage here, as an ER nurse these images are old hat.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ha I work with dogs that was my same reaction

Me 3. Better fix this op!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was expecting way worse

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey man, some people find pomegranates the same as gore, gotta get your warnings straight to avoid hate I guess

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can send you pics of my latest brown recluse bite? Its pretty sweet... the necrosis is over tho... not black anymore. Sorry.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Story time!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Latest...?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been bit 3 times now

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My bad. I can re-open the wound with a screw driver and post photos of that, if you'd like.

9 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 2

Don't make promises you know you won't keep

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

On behalf of all living beings with eyes and/or nervous systems, p l e a s e d o n ' t

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

For the sake of @magemorpheus, you should get another bite in your ass to show it off.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wound? I've cut my self worse than that opening tin cans

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No need, that sort of thing is pretty common in our ER as well. Would still be SFW. Glad to hear you are recovering nicely though.

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Now wait a second. I mean @op did offer. Who are we simple folk to turn down ops kind offer like that?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Hope your current/next shift is a breeze.

What kind of acid was it?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No clue. Sorry.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I guess I have now lol. I've seen similar looking diabetic foot ulcers. Some of those will haunt your soul forever.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I suppose a hospital horrors picture collection is out of the question? :P

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, they have this law called HIPPA which is a privacy law that makes taking those sorts of pictures a no-no

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn laws, getting in the way of our horror. But yeah, makes sense. Didn't even consider something like that.
