For the next two weeks, both private persons and public authorities in Denmark are allowed to fly the Ukrainian flag.

(EDIT: should have specified that this is only for flags on flagpoles.)

The Danish Ministry of Justice writes in a press release that extraordinary permission has been given in light of Russia's invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

"After March 16, 2022, permission will again have to be applied for, to fly the Ukrainian flag," the ministry wrote.

It is normally not permitted to use other national flags than the Danish one in Denmark. If you want to do that, it requires permission from the authorities.

The exceptions are the Greenlandic flag, the Faroese flag, the Nordic countries' flags, the UN flag and the EU flag. These can be used without permission.

At Dahls Flagfabrik (flag producing company) in Copenhagen, it is difficult to keep up with the huge demand. The sewing rooms are wokring non-stop with sewing flags, and according to Torben Dahl from the company, the problem is currently that fabric in the Ukrainian blue and yellow colors is running out.

‘I have never experienced anything like this. We can hardly keep up. We have to go back to the European Championships in soccer in Sweden in 1992. This is the wildest thing I have experienced. We are blown away." says Torben Dahl from Dahls Flagfabrik.

A lot of Danes are currently telling the government that they can take in a family, private people driving to the border to help refugees.

Would someone just push the button and launch missiles at all of Putins houses?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait. Flag... poles? I thought flags were meant to be worn as clothing or painted on your pickup. Confused American.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*confused pick-up truck noises*

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: It's illegal to burn any national flags in Denmark except the Danish one.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If its worn you can burn the flag or you can send it to destruction, you can get fined for any other way of getting rid of it.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This is nice but in the end it's just more Thoughts and Prayers stuff. Ukraine needs weapons.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're getting weapons. Manpower is what they're lacking.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shoulder mounted rockets get used quick. They need air support. Even if they can hold off the tanks (which is unlikely), Putin will bomb.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Denmark has also sent weapons, gear and first aid kits to Ukraine. The weapons just arrived today.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is much easier for the Swedish flag manufacturing companies to switch.

Personal pride of nationalism is an idiotic thing

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Pride in collective achievements makes sense. Pride in a symbol doesn't, really. And it's dangerous.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

America also has a number of limits for our flag vs. other flags, how to respect our flag, etc. It's just not typically enforced. 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Limits like national flags should fly at the same height and be the same size? I don't think that's law though, just the flag code

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have no idea if other countries are the same but I would guess yes? I'm too lazy to find out haha 2/2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not enforceable, it would be unconstitutional. At least it would be with a balanced Supreme Court.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

True! While it is a federal law, it's trumped by the first amendment. I wonder if Denmark enforces? Or if the "permission" was just a 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

formality to make a statement. 2/2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Should have specified that this is only in regard to flags on flagpoles. Sorry!

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

I don't get the distinction? I am from Canada though where we don't have flag laws, just suggestions on etiquette.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's not true at all. We have several laws regarding the Canadian flag, foergin flags as well. Canada.ca has a few pages dedicated to this

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Those are suggestions. There is no fine or legal recourse to enforce those guidelines at all. It even Says that at the top of the guide.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Okay so digging a bit more as I recalled a douchebag in Alberta who was flying a nazi flag. He got charged with hate crimes

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

“Our position is that flying a Nazi flag is clearly hate motivated. And according to the Criminal Code of Canada

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow. It really is pretty dumb that you're not normally allowed to flag with another nations flag.

4 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 22

That's actually pretty standard around the world, and for good reason. That you don't know or understand is unfortunate.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

What reason?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That they are signal of in which country you are.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cute, Americans complaining about stupid patriotism things.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure it only applies to flagpoles at public places etc. I'm not Danish tho so I dunno.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Having a flagpole in your garden, at your summer house etc. Is very common here, it applies to ALL flagpoles.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The U.S lets you fly multiple flags as long as the U.S flag is clearly higher next to the other flags.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Flag code in US is other country's flags are at the same height. States are under.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Generally you fly the local nations flag on the most prominent pole. You NEVER have more than 1 on any pole.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As a single person I think you can this is more on top of buildings or as a front to businesses, where it's important to display the flag

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what will really bake your noodle is we can’t fly the danish flag except on holidays or our birthday

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

What? You can fly it everyday. Just pill it down before sunset.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

no, you can fly a vimpel, but not the flag

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Thought I might be wrong so I looked it up. Maybe just a tradition? Or just a Jutland thing?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure it only counts if you are not flying the danish

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're wrong then.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, lots of Danish companies breaking the law then

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unless they asked permission, which is something you don't know.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly I'd appreciate a rule like that so I wouldn't have confederate losers flying their colors in my neighborhoods.

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 6

I mean yeah, but the price of freedom is that to take away people's right to be assholes, you have to take away decent people's rights too.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would rather immunity be given to anyone who wishes to remove and burn any confederate flags they find.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'd hate a law like that. Better forbid the confederate flag than to stop someone from raising the flag of a country they have heritage in.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

I flew the american flag for about 10 min on bidens innaug. day. my neighbours loved it

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

People would have to take down their decent flags as well. I like decent flags.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

you can fly non-national flags whenever. not sure if United Federation of Planets is allowed…

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There probably is a law if it's on an actual flag pole.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Flagpole in their yard is 20+ feet tall with a US flag and then confederate flag right under it. But idk if there's any law on it

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are people for who this truly is about Southern American culture and heritage. But then they should also use Black Southerner symbols!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, ignorant and racist people. And I'm saying that as someone who grew up in a home w a rebel flag blanket & bumper stickers.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not without reason.

4 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 1

That's terrific

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My God they're so cute.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

wild

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

No I'm pretty sure they're domesticated

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well, there are a lot of exceptions, but it's apparently an old law from 1915. I guess lots of countries have similar laws?

4 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 4

We have a law that says you can't leave a national flag hoisted after dusk. Must be brought down.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that actually a law or is it just tradition? Never heard it called a law before. (Danish dude)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Law

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm honestly shocked that even in the US we don't have any kind of law like that.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Surprised America doesn't. Norms and codes of conduct for federal, state, and local govt, but no rules for private ppl/businesses.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Flag code isnt law just guidelines

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's probably about flag pole specifically. Entry of people where I live have Mexican flags etc. on their cars or hanging on their wall.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Oh yes, should have specified that this is only in relation to flagpoles. My bad!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It might not be. I was just thinking it probably is.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never heard of it before. It sounds crazy to me

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

It's pretty standard, as the flags are literally meant as signposts of sorts to tell where you are, you wouldn't want people to think ½

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

They're in Mexico when they're in Kansas, or in North Korea in Washington....

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

The US has a plethora of laws regarding its flag, why is it inconceivable that other nations have their quirks?

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The US flag code is just something the gov follows. It's not enforceable on citizens.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like the us gives 2 fucks about the flag code. It also doesn't stop you from flying another countries flag if you wish.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I would literally riot if my favorite playboy model couldn't wear the american flag to cover her lady bits.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I have had 3 instances in my hometown where a business or my school was flying the flags improperly and were threatened with fines

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Flag code isnt law.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Why is it dumb? It is our flag. You can fly any other flag under it but dannebrog has to be at top and not smaller. Or get a permission.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

Not under it, you NEVER under any circumstances fly 2 flags on one pole, it's akin to spitting and trampling the lower one.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

You can't fly other flags but the permitted EU, UN and nordic flags, regardless of the danish flag being at top. Permission is necessary.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fair enough. You are right. Just checked. But still don't see the issue. When in rome....

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The issue is you paying a "hefty" fine, but the danish people thanks you in that case, since that's less taxes for the rest of the country

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The fine, as far as i know, is 2500 dkk which i would definately call hefty.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well that the nature off every fine. And I do think the police will let you go with a Warming if you are a foreigner.
