Damn, I better change my Secret Santa gift then..

My EX-wife came home with 2 puppies “in a box” for Christmas 15 years ago. Obi, my border collie, and Honey, my boxer turn 15 this week

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lot of these posts lately. Like, A LOT. Is this the new up-vote magnet people are using?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Adopt, don't shop!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dog is gonna live forever

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My lovely spanish rescue puppy I got for my own birthday 7 years ago had to be put to sleep yesterday at the old age of 15.5.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sorry for the loss of your buddy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not just a commitment. It's a family member you will lose way too soon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or just buy a time bomb as a gift. It's a short term commitment and it's low mantienence.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU! I work at 2 rescues right now and I can't tell you how many applications come in for "gift" animals at this time of year.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I’m surprised you do those at all.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They aren't literal separate applications -- we'll interview someone and they'll say they're getting the animal as a gift. No no no!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My family got a dog each year for the past two years. We're keeping them forever and I'm so glad to have them around.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What if you buy it as live stock then it is only a couple year commitment.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That would only count if you're raising dogs for meat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livestock

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

15 years, only if I'm very responsible! Otherwise you're basically a sea monkey.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This goes for any pet, my cats will live 15+ years and my turtle will watch me and my SO die.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, now I have almost a whole year to consider it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That being said, don't assume everyone who gets a pet for Christmas will abandon it. Loads of pineapples do look after and love it properly.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

The holiday period is actually a good time to get a puppy because you're home more often and can get them settled in. The issue is impulse

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buys which happen year round, they just happen in bulk on the holidays. It's fucking depressing to go on Craigslist in January.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those are good pineapples.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Username checks out

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep, the year after my youngest sibling moved out I got my mom a dog for Christmas because she was having a tough time with an empty nest >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and she LOVES that dog. Granted I discussed it with my dad first to see if it would be a good idea, so it wasn't a total surprise.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can we also say "Don't buy a pet for your children and expect them to take care of it. That pet is *yours*."

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depends on the age and maturity of the child. My eight year old does everything for her GSD mix. Including poop pickup in the yard.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

While it does a little, a parent should never get a pet for a kid if they aren't willing to take over the care should a child get bored.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not saying every child will, but even if a kid seems really mature the parent needs to realize that its a possibility.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We just cover the finances. Those two have an amazing bond.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I cannot upvote this enough. People seem to think that pets make great Christmas presents, but in the end they get abandoned or neglected :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My last pup I got for Christmas is still with us at 10 years old

8 years ago | Likes 193 Dislikes 1

10<15, sounds legit

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

We had a wheaten terrier for 10 years. Got him on Christmas and he died on Christmas. He was a good boy. Helped my mom find her cancer.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Thank you for being responsible humans!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

At least with my doggo

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But that's a very important part to be responsible in!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I bought a fish because I don't want to over commit. He turns 8 this year... They can live up to 15+. Stupid massive tiger Oscar cichlid.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I did this with a gecko. I’d always wanted one, he was the biggest asshole. I found him a new home, I think he’s still alive at 13.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Was it a tokay? My parents tried to convince me to get one of those instead of a bearded dragon when I was young...glad I was stubborn.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a golden gecko. Pretty to look at, not sociable like a leopard. Bit me & drew blood quite a few times.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

55 gallon tank and a few hundred dollars in decorations and equipment.. He's still an asshole. Uproot and breaks any cool decorations I add.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Oscars are rreeaalllyyy mean

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile, I'm hoping my pup manages to hang on until Christmas. That would be my best gift.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

15? Maybe. More like 8

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My own scrumptious fluff snuggle has been getting these black dots in right eye. He's 7 yrs old now, I hope he'll live another 7.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My parents really want pets again, my brother and I insists on them not having pets, they're +75, on the other hand, they're old and lonely.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the PSA - this applies to many of our animal companions that live longer than a novelty.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Will post something similar for the bunny-dumpers in the spring before Easter.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even longer if it's a cat.

8 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 1

Even longer if it's a tarantula.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I had a scorpion once. Someone in my house let him out and the cat fucked it up :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

:-(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FYI: A dead scorp REEKS way more than any other dead thing ever.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neices cat lived to 22. That cat's son, our cat, is now 16 and likely is going to try and meet/beat his mom in longevity.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

I pet a 24 year old cat. It was like a purring bag of bones.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

My little bastard of a cat just won’t die. He’s only 4, but still.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We moved “Devil Kitty” to Auburn, Al where he tortured a whole neighborhood

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

15 years? Why not go for 90?!

8 years ago | Likes 493 Dislikes 1

Or 150

8 years ago | Likes 188 Dislikes 0

That makes me panic.. some tortoises can't breathe upside down!!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I see your tortoise and raise you a backward aging jellyfish.

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

Couldn't find a .gif of that species so this may or may not be the correct jellyfish.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

I always wanted a parrot but I'm afraid it will out live me and no one will take care of it

How do they accidentally kill themselves?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So like if you're not paying attention to them I can imagine they chew into wires or eat poisonous shit or just get in dangerous situations

I can only assume by getting into things if they're not monitored. My family has a caique and they're super curious and mischievous.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

parrots should never have been domesticated

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 10

Also they're flock birds. They thrive when they're with other birds.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

I don't know why you're being downvoted when it's true. I know a lot of people actually consider it inhumane to get a single bird as a pet./

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

The owner becomes the flock. A well cared for parrot can be very happy as a pet if given proper attention.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Very true, but I think the percentage of people capable of providing the level of care they need & deserve is very small

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

It's not that much. Out of cage time an hour or more a day + some direct attn.Similar to a dog.Problem is when ppl treat them as trophy pets

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looks like a German Shepherd, more like a 7 or 8 year commitment with hip problems.

8 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 14

My parents' dude lived until he was 13, and could have gone longer if they fed him a good diet. Just find a good breeder.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right? I'm HOPING for a healthy decade!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah...my wife is trying to get one next year...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And that's why you buy from reputable breeders who let you see both sire and dam and provide health paperwork (if you don't rescue).

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I met too many dog owners who learned this hard way... :(

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Personally I'd always stick with a breeder with 1+ yr of research on just the breeder themselves.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This. We got our last 2 from reputable breeders and the dogs were absolutely amazing, everything that was promised/bred for and more

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I had my first dog from a reg'd breeder 5 yr ago and he's been everything + more too. I would never do it any other way now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a GS mix. He currently 15. We're hoping he makes it for Christmas :) good boy makes me proud.

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Same here with GS/Husky. Still running like he was 8 week ^^

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh wow, sounds like a gorgeous mix! Mines mixed with lurcher (we think, he's rescued) he's got very bad legs now so can't walk far. :(

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mixes tend to have fewer health problems and live longer. Also cheaper. I've never gotten why pure breds are more popular.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's that whole status symbol bullshit. So many bullshit indicators of how much money you have.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah I'll think I'll always choose a mix rescue. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With that attitude, sure. But with proper diet, exercise, & supplements, you can give him/her a wonderful & long life. Source: I have a GSD.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Had a gsd for a breeder that provided dogs to police depts. Lived to 13.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah my trainer helps & trains GSDs & Belgian Malinois & they’re all in great health.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have a parrot.. that bitch is gonna out live me

8 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

Ou what kind? I have a green cheek conure he's a sassy little bitch

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Eclectus parrot. He’s become super defensive over my mom since I left for college. So now when I’m home it’s nonstop aggression from him.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

aw man. he probably feels like u abandoned him - if u can, spend more time just chilling with him and also give him lots of treats to

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

associate your presence with positivity. should help to rebuild the relationship but it'll take a little time

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I moved 2000 miles from Home I see him 4 times a year.
